Teresa May or Andrea Leadsom?

So without starting anything too politically fraught I wonder if people would share with me who they prefer for conservative leadership out of the two.

The race is now down to them and so we will have a female PM again!

Opinions?

Poor Sarah indeed. I presume her boss Mr Dacre will have taken a dim view of her 'leaked' email.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/07/2016 00:02

Both May and Gove published their tax returns without hesitation didn't they?

I think I'd actually rather Gove was PM than Leadsom. He's an odious human being but doesn't attempt to hide that fact at least.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/07/2016 00:07

Do you know, I think Leadsom will do less damage than Gove and that's saying something. Gove is a complete...well, you know. He's disastrous, no respect for anyone.

But I think Gove and Mrs Gove are probably pariahs for now - they really are backstabbers. She was godmother to SamCam's child, and they'd been friends for years - and they were seen effing and blinding at each other just when Gove came out on the Leave side. Look what's happened since then.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/07/2016 00:11

A plus side of Leadsom becoming leader is that she'll never be able to maintain it, so a GE would be a dead cert. The damage she might do in the interim is alarming to say the least though.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/07/2016 00:12

Wait, SamCam did something undignified?!

Aerfen · 08/07/2016 00:12

UTGT
I dont see why Gove should be expected to be loyal to Cameron over Brexit just because they're personal friends? Sam Cam and Sarah behaving like fishwives is ridiculous.

SwedishEdith · 08/07/2016 00:13

"seen effing and blinding at each other"

Where?

squoosh · 08/07/2016 00:15

I read that Sarah Vine is godmother to one of the Cameron offspring and that Samantha Cameron wants nothing more to do with her or her husband but I missed any reports of effing and blinding. Sadly.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/07/2016 00:17

At a party - a tory v posh bash I think.

More recently, there was the senior tory's 50th bash where Sarah said to Cameron "are we ok?" and he hissed at her "we would be if you'd get your husband off the telly".

Allegedly.

Millyonthefloss2 · 08/07/2016 00:40

May might be squeaky clean financially but she is cold and ruthless. What are her principles exactly and her achievements? Apart from keeping her head down and staying in position for a long time. She is claiming that because Leadsom has announced that all EU nationals already here should stay, she wants to give a home to "foreign criminals". What kind of talk is that?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 08/07/2016 00:44

May has a far better proven track record than "lies on her CV" Leadsom.

Donatellalymanmoss · 08/07/2016 00:56

I think May is looking like the least bad option.

ManonLescaut · 08/07/2016 00:58

This is almost making me feel nostalgic for John Major.

Peregrina · 08/07/2016 01:02

Loathsom is making much of being relatively new in Parliament as were Blair and Cameron when elected as leaders of their respective parties. Since Blair has now been damned by the Chilcot report and Cameron has resigned in ignominy, having plunged the country into chaos, is this something she should be boasting about?

Aerfen · 08/07/2016 01:09

"I'm not a big fan of Theresa May's ultra cautious style. (example - she won't say yet that all EU nationals here already can stay.) I think that is both morally wrong and bad for families and businesses".

Why do you want the future British PM to commit when the EU hasnt yet committed to allowing British nationals to remain in the EU? May is absolutely right to be cautious. You dont just make a promise without extracting something in return. Good job youre not leading the negotiations hey! Wink

MangoMoon · 08/07/2016 01:53

Just watched Ruth Davidson on Newsnight and am utterly gutted that she isn't a contender for Leadership of the whole party.
She'd be ace at it.
I heart her a lot.

crossroads3 · 08/07/2016 06:39

Theresa May has always been fairly euro-sceptic. In fact to quote the Telegraph "she has always been euro-sceptic, but she's not a swivel-eyed loon". Their words.

I believe she supported Cameron, and kept very quiet during the campaign (as Boris should have, grrrr).

This is bad news as I am really hoping that article 50 is not triggered.

Entire government no longer has mandate IMO and we need a General Election whoever the members vote in.

StrictlyMumDancing · 08/07/2016 06:59

Theresa May has always been fairly euro-sceptic.

This is kind of why I feel out of all the bad options she was the better. As a remainer she was aware that not all the ills of the UK are the EUs fault and doesn't just want to see the world burn. But as a euro-sceptic she isn't immune to the EUs problems either. Whichever way we end up going its going to take someone who can see all sides to get something that can placate the majority.

StrictlyMumDancing · 08/07/2016 06:59

And I've feel like I've just fallen down that rabbit hole again Grin

Capricorn76 · 08/07/2016 07:13

I couldn't sleep properly after reading more about Leadsom. She will destroy our country if she becomes PM.

nuttymango · 08/07/2016 07:29

May but I can't believe I said that.

it's depressing that the media are making a big thing of having a second woman PM. It shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary :(

DetestableHerytike · 08/07/2016 07:33

Yy nutty. They are all sticking it in the headline!

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/07/2016 07:42

Just two months ago, May was reasserting her position that the UK should resile from the European convention on human rights. She has drawn back from this position now in the light of brexit, but it is a sign of just how 'hard line' she is. I'm really hoping she will appeal to the majority of Conservative party members, who generally seem to like this sort of thing (giving prisoners the vote making people feel sick etc).

Leadsom would be a disaster - and also a disturbing echo of the 1930s, in terms of an unknown with crypto fascist monetary backing coming up from the outside.

StrictlyMumDancing · 08/07/2016 07:49

figment The prisoners vote thing wasn't coming through ECHR but European Court of Justice which we would be out of if out of EU (not 100% sure on what happens if we go for an EEA style agreement with ECJ). ECJ isn't impossible to win at though, just before the referendum we won our case on Child Benefits. I wonder if May's pulling back on ECHR is because she's realised her own folly Grin

DetestableHerytike · 08/07/2016 07:58

I think it is positive if politicians change their minds when wrong.
