Teresa May or Andrea Leadsom?

So without starting anything too politically fraught I wonder if people would share with me who they prefer for conservative leadership out of the two.

The race is now down to them and so we will have a female PM again!

Opinions?

Heseltine really was golden boy.

Anyone remember (sadly pre-TV days) when he swung the mace around in the HoC ?

He was nicknamed "Tarzan".

However, he wasn't popular with the Tory Grandees ...

  1. Too European
  2. Too much integrity - refused to sign the certificates witholding evidence in the Iraqi supergun inquiry.
  3. Too independent (He supported Westland who made a better helicopter against the "everything from the US" Thatcher Kool-Aid (why do you think Maggie and Ronnie were the Jay-Z and Beyonce of the 80s ?)).

No way could he be PM

Perhaps worth pointing out that AL has just stepped out of the race. TM has it by default.

123therearenomoreusernames · 11/07/2016 13:58

TM has it now. However I think it is a poisoned chalice.

As I've been saying everywhere, I give her a year, tops. Normal service, aka a man, will be restored once the immediate kerfuffle has died down.

Margrethe · 11/07/2016 14:01

I agree, I was reading somewhere recently about the "glass cliff." This is where women can only get positions of power and leadership when things are an awful mess and men don't want the job. Apparently there are statistics to bear out that female CEOs often get the chance only when the company has been mismanaged to the wall.

Students of Tory party history will recall there was a time when they in opposition, and used a similar tactic to oust the unpopular incumbent leader.

The joke candidate they replaced Edward Heath with was called Margaret Thatcher.

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2016 14:12

"You, Mrs May, are no Margaret Thatcher"

MangoMoon · 11/07/2016 14:15

Maggie and Ronnie were the Jay-Z and Beyonce of the 80s

Funniest comment I've read today! Grin

Check out some Spitting Image programmes from then ... the most scathing was a scene where Ronnie and Maggie were saying goodbye after a visit, and as Ronnie got on Air Force One he said ...

"It's a shame it's only her country I'm screwing"

MangoMoon · 11/07/2016 14:18

Apparently not Bertrand!

Ken Clarke made me laugh when he was talking about her being a 'difficult woman' and then laughed and said "but we worked under Margaret Thatcher!"

That was the best bit of caught off guard conversation I've seen, I think Grin

MangoMoon · 11/07/2016 14:21

I was only 9 when Spitting Image started, but I remember watching it over the years - I loved it.
We need spitting image back again!

The80sweregreat · 11/07/2016 14:22

Its going to be a May day soon - by the end of this week they said on the news ( because the Queen is away , so they need her to approve it as well apparently) I am sure that the Police will be thrilled ( not) and she will be compared to Maggie on a regular basis too. At least Andrea has stepped down though, but it almost makes me dewy eyed for the Dave/ Nick Clegg set up 6 years back..

" I think a sensible woman is just what the country needs right now. It'd be good to have a sensible woman as opposition leader too."

Why?

123therearenomoreusernames · 11/07/2016 16:10

BBC reporting new PM by Wednesday PM. Apparently announced by DC. Shock

MotherofPearl · 11/07/2016 16:21

Leadsom out; May in: the Lord giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 11/07/2016 16:22

Best outcome is to just install TM now IMO. I was feeling utterly bored by the thought of a 9 week leadership battle, hustings etc, and it hadn't even begun Confused

And Arron Banks can just fuck right off.

bridgetoc · 11/07/2016 16:50

All a bit of a disaster really...... I voted for brexit, but even I could see that neither Gove nor Leadsom were up to the job. The man who was responsible for the brexit win was Boris, and he is the one that should be up there standing against May. Now we have a coronation, and for me, May is a 'by the numbers' politician. A politician that hid underneath her desk for the whole referendum!

JudyCoolibar · 11/07/2016 17:00

The fact that we won't get saddled with Boris is one of the minor silver linings.

bridgetoc · 11/07/2016 17:36

I disagree Judy......

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/07/2016 19:43

I definitely agree that not being stuck with Boris is a major silver lining.

Peregrina · 11/07/2016 19:49

I wonder if Leasdom bowed out because there was something in her previous year's tax returns that she couldn't massage away? She was mighty slow to publish the information for the one year she did.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 11/07/2016 19:58

Yes, well.

This is why there was so much eye rolling when Remainers said 'Don't Brexit because there isn't a competent Brexit leader with a competent plan...' and Leavers said 'This has nothing to do with leadership of the country - it's purely about leaving the EU'...

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 11/07/2016 20:27

Peregrina, Thinking about this today, I think it's most likely she realised she was not up to it. I think she was deeply embarrassed by the Times article, but probably what was more important was prominent senior Tories calling for her to withdraw. She could have gone on to win - but it was very clear that the parliamentary party was behind Theresa May. It could be argued that the stability of the party now is more important than anything.

Apparently the pound went up today with the announcement that TM would be PM.
