March? What march?

Can anyone else find much news coverage of this 'democratic march against democracy'? Twitter is full of info, but tune into the news channels and you would be forgiven for thinking it wasnt happening. Kind of has the ring of 'nobody cares' really doesnt it?

A number of marchers posting on twitter seem to think they are geographically being removed from Europe, although I guess you could forgive them given the odd name given to the march itself 'March for europe'

Why is it not 'March for E.U'? Isnt that what they are really there for? Anyone else as confused as I am?

OP - if you can hand on heart say that the Leave camp wouldn't still be campaigning if the vote had gone remain, then your pants are on fire.

I dont know Greenwood, I know I wouldnt, because I voted on the basis of democracy, but due to democracy, I also accept that I cannot and will not presume to speak for the majority.

The second referendum petition was written by a Leave campaigner before the vote. Hoist by his own petard. Grin

Thefuturecouldbebright · 02/07/2016 22:50

I know, and FWIW because I believe in Democracy, I think he is a fool, who deserves to be laughed at!

I believe in a democratic right of protest. I don't see how you can believe in democracy, without believing in the right to protest.

Thefuturecouldbebright · 02/07/2016 22:52

Again, he is a farage supporter who needs a lesson on how the democratic system works! I know you wont believe me, but I wouldnt have supported it if the situation were reversed... I honestly wouldnt.

I do wonder why the protest marches aren't held in the places where the Leave vote won....rather than London?

Given that many Remain voters blame ' the uneducated and people of low intellect' (one of the more polite descriptions) from outside London, I would have thought they'd want to direct their protestations towards those people in person? God knows there are enough very vocal Remainers on here.....you'd think they'd jump at the chance to tell some of these 'knuckle-draggers' exactly what they think of them to their faces?

March outside London and while you're there....Sunderland, Thanet, Oldham wherever...take a stroll around and see for yourselves how people have been living for years - and why they might grasp any opportunity to bring about a change...guaranteed or not.

For many Remain voters living in London this is the first time the possibility of their pockets taking a hit has been real - so now they care.

The reality is though that many people in London will still not suffer anything like the hardship that people living in other parts of the country have been enduring for years.

Thefuturecouldbebright · 02/07/2016 22:52

I have NEVER said I dont believe in the right to protest?

OP posts:
Coatgate · 02/07/2016 22:53

Surely we all believe in the right to protest?

Thefuturecouldbebright · 02/07/2016 22:55

But I also reserve (because of democracy) the right to have a giggle at the pics? No?

Loving the idea of a Remain protest in Sunderland.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 02/07/2016 22:58

Which is it - "giving a shit about this" or "giggling at the photos" ?

In what way do you give a shit about this?

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/07/2016 23:00

Who is talking about 'knuckle draggers'? That is just vile. I do hope the people who live in these regions will protest, because the bottom line is that pulling out of the EU will only make their lives more difficult. Name me one positive and achievable improvement to the lives of people living in the regions you have listed that you realistically expect to result from negotiations to leave the EU? They have been conned.

Brexit · 02/07/2016 23:01

You are quite confrontational Under

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 02/07/2016 23:04

Ye Gods.....can't you people just stop SNIPING at each other?? Look, we had a vote, it is decided. End of story. ALL of us who voted agreed by the mere act of voting that we felt it was the way forward. We all hoped to win, but that meant many of us would lose. Some of us don't like the end result, but TOUGH CHEESE!!!!!

I don't like it - but I am not so stupid I demand a second referendum. If you voted, you concurred with the process. So live with the result and stop being so ridiculous.

Brexit · 02/07/2016 23:04

The people in 'these regions' as you say voted out. Why should they protest?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 02/07/2016 23:04

No more so than you, brexit, dear.

Thefuturecouldbebright · 02/07/2016 23:06

Greenwood, you accuse me of being goady, yet you ignore every single response to your points that I make. I cannot engage with you anymore, because it is tiresome and pointless... You dont actually care for my responses, you are just intent on maintaining the perceived moral high ground at any cost. Good luck to you, I hope one day, you are able to listen to an opinion other than your own, I think you may find it enlightening if you truly listened and stepped outside of your own prejudices.

Brexit,

Would that be Sunderland that voted out, and people voted out overwhelmingly on immigration yet has a population that is 95% white British, and where the second largest population is Bengali?

Sorry I'm from the North East but the vote in Sunderland is fucking laughable seeing as it gets so much funding from the EU.

A radio 4 programme interviewed people from Sunderland and asked them for their opinions all were " leave because of the immigrants taking our jobs and putting pressure on services." When asked when they had experienced this personally, they said no. These people have been influenced by the media more than anything else

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 02/07/2016 23:07

No, lastgirlonthetheleft - you don't get to silence us like that.

People have the right to protest (not least because of the cynically dishonest campaign) and we have the right to discuss it. When someone starts a thread like this, we can reply.

StrictlyMumDancing · 02/07/2016 23:08

I'm certain there will be leaver's protests. Because there are so many groups of leavers and no defined leaving plan that when someone in government pulls their fingers out of their butts and decides something there will be a lot of upset leavers.

Brexit · 02/07/2016 23:08

Funding from the EU?

Here's a hand out. Now shut up and fuck off home.

Seriously?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 02/07/2016 23:11

Greenwood stop being so dramatic. I am not trying to silence you. You can shout all you want.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 02/07/2016 23:11

Did you want a serious discussion about Brexit's campaign, the legitimate right to protest, and democracy then? By starting a thread called "March? What March?" Or did you just want to giggle at the marchers? Oh well. Sorry for spoiling your little gloat.

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/07/2016 23:13

I live in a town which voted Leave and has plenty of deprivation. When I walk around and see the poverty which exists and the way that people here in the North in communities which got fucked over by successive governments, it doesn't come as a surprise to me because I've always been aware of it. What I have noticed far more in recent weeks is the number of college buildings and facilities built and funded by the EU. The investment we have had here is amazing, the positive effects of the EU in ways which clearly directly benefit the vulnerable and deprived are numerous. And I'm supposed to watch all of that evaporate and people's already difficult lives get worse without a word of protest? Seriously, if you think the referendum is the last word in democracy and you don't understand how a peaceful protest is in no way an affront to democracy, I don't know what anyone can say to you that will actually get through. Democracy wasn't just activated for the referendum and then packed away again; the right to have our voices heard is kind of the whole point of democracy. You telling us to shut up is the most undemocratic act of this whole debacle.
