I regret the way I voted.

After a long day reading Facebook (didn't announce on there that I'd voted out), colleagues talking and family (who do know how I voted) complaining, I really wish I'd voted to remain.

I read a few bullet point articles and felt swayed by the amount of money were were paying to the EU. But I feel as though I'd partly not researched enough and also believed the hype.

Seeing the pound falling and friends worried for their jobs etc, I feel as though I've done something really bad. In fact, I'm sure I have.

Does anyone else regret the way they voted, whichever way that was?

This will be the commitment Cornwall Council is counting on. It's on the official Vote Leave campaign website.

www.voteleavetakecontrol.org/leave_ministers_commit_to_maintain_eu_funding

I quote:
"Thirteen Government ministers and senior Conservatives have today committed that every region, group and recipient of EU funding will continue to get that money after a ‘Leave’ vote in the EU referendum. In an open letter, the signatories - who include Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Priti Patel - assure those people and organisations who currently receive money from the European Union that their funding is safe if we Vote Leave."

Where have I said we should get rid of the immigrants? Don't try that shit with me, I haven't once said we should get rid of all the immigrants so don't put words in my mouth.

throckenholt · 25/06/2016 16:52

Trying to find stats - but it looks like Merthyr has had one of the fastest growth of immigrants (mainly from Poland) - but it has gone from a relatively low base (

Absolutely astounding. How could they make such a promise? Is this with the "NHS money"? Or everyone elses taxes?
I hope there's a way they could be legally done for this. They need to pay out of their own pockets.

PattyPenguin · 25/06/2016 16:56

pickledpears and where did I claim you had said any such thing?

You said this afternoon "..We have been screwed over again and again by each government. We have an influx of eu immigrants and no funding to our services to maintain them."

Now, to deal with your second point, there are two answers. Either fewer immigrants, or more funding for services.

Can you tell me how leaving the EU will provide either of these answers? The present government is cutting funding for public services, not increasing it. And leading figures from the Vote Leave campaign are now rowing back on immigration.

I post links in case people think I'm making claims without anything to substantiate them.

Namehanger · 25/06/2016 16:58

Stunning, making it up as they go along. Just like their campaign.

Not sure how they could promise that - it is like a manifesto - but they weren't even a party being elected. But if that lot do end up running the Government in the years to come then we need to hold them to these "promises" - plus the ones to support farming, agriculture, science research, the NHS and the rest.

If this result was a roar from the people that we are not satisfied with the status quo then we need to be more vocal and more forceful and hold them to account.

throckenholt · 25/06/2016 17:02

and fishing - the fishermen of Lowestoft are convinced life is going to get much better for them now.

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 17:05

Patty my post was in reply to somebody else not you. As I said in an earlier post the people of my town are desperate and brexit gave us the possibility of restricting immigration. We have all been aware throughout the campaign that immigration will still exist.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 25/06/2016 17:05

By magicking up some more fish to replenish the stocks they have plundered for centuries?

StrictlyMumDancing · 25/06/2016 17:10

The fishermen of Lowestoft would probably have been better off if we hadn't packed a certain Nigel Farage off to the EU and instead sent someone who would attend and vote on the Fisheries commission instead.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 25/06/2016 17:10

sukey I voted remain but fisheries is one issue over which EU is against UK interests.

Once UK fisherman are the only people who can fish in UK waters there will be less pressure on fish stocks.

So no need to magic up more fish.

It's a shame so much of the Scottish fishing fleet is already gone.

That is a good summary. With fishing, like a lot of things, there is a lack of explanation of the true situation. It is simple and understandable for people seeing their livelihood disappearing to want to blame someone. But normally it is much more complex and nuanced than it appears on the surface.

Whatever the truth, I doubt the fishing industry will see their dreams come true, any more than the NHS will suddenly be funded as it needs to be to meet the demands.

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 17:59

Loletta, I don't think I'm naive, I don't believe Welsh streets are going to be suddenly paved with gold. Just seemed a choice between the devil and deep blue sea, things weren't good for us so why would we vote for it to stay the same? I accept the leave vote is a gamble as neither side gave us solid facts.

Great that your food factory is a good employer. The one in Merthyr pays minimum wage, there have been protests due to the company removing shift allowances from minimum wage workers due to the national living wage.

Most employees there are on 0 hour contracts and employed through agencies. Many of them go into work to be sent home again as their not needed that day. No pay for that of course.

PotatoBread · 25/06/2016 18:02

How is leaving the EU going to change the wages and working conditions at your local food factory pickled? What do you think Boris is going to magically do?

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 18:05

Hmm where did I say anything about leaving the eu changing wages and conditions there? I only mentioned the factory as somebody asked why immigrants come to this area and my comment at 17.59 was in reply to loretta who said that at her food factory they are not underpaid.

PlatoTheGreat · 25/06/2016 18:16

But pickled Eu migrants aren't the only people who are paid MW with 0 hour contract. Nor are they ONLY MW workers working 12 hours a day.

The reality is much more mixed than that and what has been missing from the whole campaign (and your posts) is the acknowledgment that this is the case.
loletta and your descriptions aren't about one exception of how migrants are working and how well they can do and how every single other EU immigrants actually has a crap working life. They are a statement about the whole British system where it's OK to have 0 hour contract, ask for always more from employees on the ground that 'there is a high level of unemployement' that people won't say NO. It's about a system that treats its employees like crap and has been allowed to do so.
But did you know that the UK has the highest level of employement of all time and that it has reduced its level of unemployement again?
If EU migrants were such an issue, surely we wouldn't see that happening?

PlatoTheGreat · 25/06/2016 18:18

Xpost pickled

So what was your point? Has immigration made any difference in working condition or wages?

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 18:26

Plato I know migrants aren't the only ones affected by those employment issues, I didn't mean to imply that. You only have to look at low paid jobs such as care work to see all workers are being shafted not just migrants.

I know unemployment has reduced, the cuts to benefits has pushed those who are able (and plenty who aren't able) into work.

My point was that whilst employers have a wide pool of immigrants who will work for less and under poorer working conditions it's harder for anyone to fight for better working conditions.

Lack of industry is also a significant issue in keeping wages down for uk citizens and migrants alike. Gone are the days you could go from one manafacturing job straight into another and employers know this and take advantage of it. The EU does have its part in this as they provided grants to encourage manufactures to move abroad.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/06/2016 18:32

I voted remain and would vote remain again. I live in Edinburgh and the gloom and despondency is palpable.

I'm not going to rant at you OP. Thank you for your honesty.

I have signed the petition not because I think there can be another referendum but the Brexit mps need to know how bitterly disappointed remain voters are. The UK is deeply divided. I don't mean just the Scottish/English divide.

BMW6 · 25/06/2016 18:38

I call bullshit and OP voted Remain actually - your protests to the contrary!
