I regret the way I voted.

After a long day reading Facebook (didn't announce on there that I'd voted out), colleagues talking and family (who do know how I voted) complaining, I really wish I'd voted to remain.

I read a few bullet point articles and felt swayed by the amount of money were were paying to the EU. But I feel as though I'd partly not researched enough and also believed the hype.

Seeing the pound falling and friends worried for their jobs etc, I feel as though I've done something really bad. In fact, I'm sure I have.

Does anyone else regret the way they voted, whichever way that was?

As I just said the Welsh Government are investing in manufacturing hence the ajax contract in Merthyr.

Topseyt · 25/06/2016 13:10

I did plenty of research and reading. I voted remain after much deliberation, being on the fence for some time etc.

I do not regret my vote one little bit, but if I had been stupid enough to vote leave as a protest vote against the government without even considering the possibility that in this instance there was a perfect possibility it might happen, then I would be regretting my vote big time.

Ridiculous though it might seem, there were plenty who really meant to remain, but voted leave to stick two fingers up to the government, or to the party leaders etc. They are the ones who are now acting all horrified and disbelieving, and they should be hanging their heads in shame. This has gone around the world, and as far as Europe and other countries are concerned, we are now in Flouncers' Corner looking like idiots.

I admire your honesty here OP, in admitting you regret your vote and the reasons for it, even though you have not said it was a protest vote.

I don't think that we should be cowed by the rhetoric now coming out of the EU. I hope we don't trigger article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty until or unless we are good and ready. I don't think we are at all ready at the moment, but we are into uncharted territory now so who knows what will happen.

There is a petition on the parliamentary website about triggering a second referendum due to the fuck-ups this time. Might be worth considering.

PattyPenguin · 25/06/2016 13:20

The Welsh Government has given a loan towards the Ajax development in Merthyr, that is true.

It is also true that the contract was given General Dynamics by the UK Government. It would have been very embarassing for the UK Government to have given the contract for tanks for the British army to any factory outside Britain.

I'm not sure how often we can expect this situation to be replicated.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 13:20

Someone will suffer public sector cuts. Which area will it be - given the promises people have been sold

It will be all areas. Health, education, benefits.

If you thought austerity was hard, it will get much, much worse.

SeaEagleFeather · 25/06/2016 13:23

lulu, agreed with previous posters - you did not cast the single vote that made all the difference!

I think that the best thing you can do now is to try to get people to sign the petition for another referendum. It's maybe not got that high a chance of success, but it's one of the few practical things you can do right now. (I do wonder too if there's quite a few influential politicians hoping to be able to push another one through quite quickly!)

kesstrel · 25/06/2016 13:25

I think pre-election polls predicting results should have been banned. I believe this has been done in other countries on important issues. It would be really interesting to know how many Leave voters were protest voters, and wouldn't have voted that way if they thought there was any chance Leave would win - similarly Remain voters who didn't bother to vote.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 13:25

The Welsh government was due to get €1000 per person in West Wales and €300 per person in East Wales in economic aid from the EU Structural and Investment Fund 2014-2020. That will be gone.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 25/06/2016 13:27

Ajax is manufactured in Spain and assembled in Wales. For political reasons.

Oly5 · 25/06/2016 13:27

I'm glad you feel guilty.
All those who voted leave are idiots imo

RebelandaStunner · 25/06/2016 13:28

I voted remain and would do so again. I did deliberate for ages though and admit that I can see how people who didn't inform themselves so well voted leave.
I do wonder if the government hadn't been so tight over austerity measures whether more people would've been happier to stay.
From a selfish viewpoint glad a good portion of our money is in our three properties, which we won't be selling in the near future as we don't have to. Also that DS took a job in the right (for now) industry instead of going to uni.

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 13:29

Regarding general dynamics I believe 80% of the parts for the tanks are built in the uk with the remainder coming from Spain.

Whilst I agree it would be embarrassing for uk army equipment to be manafactured elsewhere my point was specifically regarding manufacturing in Wales not the rest of the U.K.

Mrskeats · 25/06/2016 13:29

pickled
People in north wales (near where I am) will regret this massively
Airbus is a big local employer and issued a letter to staff warning of the bad consequences of leaving
Tata steel was on a knife edge and this may be what closes the plant down
Plus what gloria said
There is little employment as it is
Glad you're happy though

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 13:31

EU funding for Wales was only agreed until 2020 anyway. It would have then been reevaluated on our economic position against poorer countries within the EU so we highly likely it would have dramatically reduced.

PattyPenguin · 25/06/2016 13:31

Gloria the Leave campaign committed to maintain EU funding www.voteleavetakecontrol.org/leave_ministers_commit_to_maintain_eu_funding

Excuse me, I may have sniggered there.

Anyway, Carwyn Jones, the Welsh First Minister, has already said publicly that he expects this commitment to be honoured. I'm almost sure he was serious.

waterfallsandmountains · 25/06/2016 13:31

I voted remain and was always a staunch advocate of the campaign.

I am completely devastated and furious at the outcome and yes sorry I do hold people like the op responsible for this mess.

Sign the petition - I would bet my house on it that if we all voted again tomorrow it would be a very different outcome as people realise the terrible consequences of what they have done.

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 13:32

Oh come on keats, tata has been on a knife edge for years due to buying in from other countries being cheaper.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 13:35

There would be no reason for the funding to be reduced in 2020, indeed, it may have increased. Parts of Wales are significantly economically deprived and Wales is the same bracket as Romania.

I will be sure to mention that to my friend who's husband works there
I love your it will all be fine attitude when clearly there is no plan
I'm with you waterfalls

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 13:38

Gloria where have you got your information from that it may have increased? Remain said it would possibly stay the same while leave said highly likely to be cut so I'd be interested to know your source.

GloriaGaynor · 25/06/2016 13:39

PattyPenguin

How terribly sad that people actually believed that without membership and contribution to the EU they would continue to receive EU funding.

pickledpears · 25/06/2016 13:39

If your friends husband works there he would have been under the threat of redundancy many times over the last 5 years just like my friend that works there. You can't blame that on yesterday's vote.

Mooseboots · 25/06/2016 13:41

As per the the way that people reacted in their "research", the outcome appears the same,
People are basing their information on guess work rather than actual facts.

justbogoff · 25/06/2016 13:41

So everything bad that happens we're just going to pretend it would have happened anyway?
