Brexit

To point out that not ALL people who voted leave are racist

I'd describe myself as extreme left. I voted leave because the EU's undemocratic. Today I wake up to ALL of my Facebook posting statuses about how they feel sick etc. all my friends are liberal, some of them would hate me if they knew. But if I was asked outright I'd probably be honest. I've made new friends recently who would definitely never speak to me again if they knew though. I feel like everyone who voted leave has been branded a racist. I feel uncomfortable that probably lots of them are sad I feel very uneasy being lumped in with them and might come to regret my decision

Posted this elsewhere but in need of some hand holding I think! Or maybe someone who feels the same way? Anyone?

Oh well done on that tactical vote then. Brilliant. Luckily your protest vote wasn't on any important issue.

cappy123 · 25/06/2016 20:31

For people that think that racists aren't among Remainers, that betrays your ignorance. I am not white, my parents are commonwealth immigrants and I voted to leave, they (pensioners) to remain. I speak several European languages and have never voted right wing, or even Tory. I will always be a public servant and grass roots campaigner. I have worked in blue and white collar jobs in Brussels following my degree in European Studies. My first job was for our govt in cross border work pre and post Maastrict. The picture is complex, lets not stereotype or polarise. On paper I should have been a Remainer, my head and heart said no. The very worst racism I and my daughter receive are from 'nice' liberal people.

cappy123 · 25/06/2016 20:37

That doesn't excuse those who voted simply on racist grounds, let's just get that clear. Why not reserve some scrutiny for the 28pc of people, including 1.5m Londoners, eligible to vote who didn't.

areyoubeingserviced · 25/06/2016 20:39

Exactly Wallis

virtualrach · 26/06/2016 16:35

By voting brexit, you have screwed over the country. You're either a xenephobe/racist, not very bright and unable to understand/believe what the experts told you, or lazy and were not bothered to do any research. Either way, we're not here to pat you on the back and tell you it's all ok now. It's not.

virtualrach · 26/06/2016 16:38

But there is a Facebook page where you can go to apologise for messing up...!

Snowcoveredthoughtcage · 26/06/2016 17:13

People really don't like being called racist do they? Even when they are. And racists are stupid. And you know how for years the far right have banged on about "I'm sick of being called racist when I talk about immigration." Well, now you can talk about it. Fill your boots. Every nasty slimy bigoted little person has crawled out of the woodwork to sneer and talk about taking our country back.

PookyHook · 26/06/2016 17:16

I didn't vote as I am not currently a UK resident and haven't been for the last 15 years. However, if I had a vote I would have voted to leave.

I'm not anti immigration. I can't stand Boris, Farage and Gove. I'm the daughter of immigrants. My British born non white husband is also the son of immigrants. My children are mixed race.

I consider myself to be a socialist. I consider the EU to be anti-democratic organisation with a neoliberal agenda. I was appalled to watch how Greece and Ireland were treated during the crisis. I think there is a strong case for a "Lexit".

Most people accept that Corbyn only halfheartedly advocated a remain vote to avoid a labour party split and that his true instinct would be to vote leave. Do people think that he is racist and anti immigrant?
I wish that there had been a stronger left wing campaign for Brexit, because now the victory has been handed to the far right.

I also happen to know a couple of people who have expressed racist views in the past and have voted to remain. One for the farming subsidies and the other for economic reasons.

TheFirie · 26/06/2016 17:44

I don't really understand why you say the EU is undemocratic.
You vote and elect the members of the European parliament who then vote in favour or against the EU laws and regulations.
You also vote and elect UK representatives who decides on the member of government including all the Ministers who are the ones sitting on the EU Minister Council.

Where is the undemocratic part?

PookyHook · 26/06/2016 18:50

Personally I think the imposition of water charges by the European commission on Ireland is undemocratic. In the last Irish general election the Irish people voted against the parties that were in favour of water charges. Yet the European commission claims that abolishing the water charges would be against European Law.

I think that the way Greece were bullied into accepting austerity when the electorate had clearly overwhelmingly voted against it was undemocratic.

Hodooooooooor · 26/06/2016 19:26

I'd describe myself as extreme left. I voted leave because the EU's undemocratic

If you were actually extreme left, you'd know that the EU is far more democratic than the UK parliamentary system.

But you're not, so you don't. and you may or may not also be racist. You're certainly on the wrong side, deluded, and partly responsible for the worst decision in the history of the country.

PookyHook · 26/06/2016 21:58

Hodooooooooor what makes you an authority on who is extreme left and who isn't? You do realise that both the socialist party and the socialist workers party advocated a leave vote?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 22:20

The far left has always been anti EU

Sadly their voice was drowned out in the referendum

Esmereldada · 26/06/2016 22:29

I'm sad to say that all - yes, all - the Leave voters I know are at the very least xenophobic. Their case for voting out was, imho, ill informed, credulous, petulant.

I am trying to do the peace and love thing because of course that's the only way forward. But...I really bloody resent them from the bottom of my heart.

A vote I didn't agree with? Fine. A stupid, ill informed vote that has buggered up my country? Hard to forgive.

Asprilla11 · 26/06/2016 22:33

My reasons for voting leave, they weren't racist or xenophobic.

Statelychangers · 26/06/2016 22:46

I just want to say, we are high tax payers, well off London types - we earn way above the amount we draw out. We believe in a fairer society - we see the EU as an organisation that helps to redistributes income throughout the region by developing local infrastructure, ultimately increasing wealth for us all.
BUT we couldn't be selfish bastards - vote Tory, vote leave, attempt to keep all our income to ourselves.

So OP I really don't get why someone who thinks of themselves as extreme left wing would vote leave and ultimately screw the working class. Confused

thecook · 26/06/2016 23:48

I agree with you OP.

The cries of racism by the Remain voters annoy me.

I voted leave I live in Brent.

I work with athltetes. Sprinters. I could hardly be racist when I give up almost every weekend in the summer (not to mention the indoor season) to work with them in a voluntary capacity. They are predominantly black.

Hodooooooooor · 26/06/2016 23:52

Oh please, the "some of my friends are black" defence is pathetic. You voted to keep immigrants out didn't you? You voted to stop other Europeans moving to the EU?

thecook · 27/06/2016 00:16

I have lived in London since 1995. I WORK WITH ATHLETES.

Do fuck off with your assumptions. Another Remain supporter who comes out with the racist line.

How much voluntary work do you do?

Sorry loser Do come out with a better excuse.

You lost love

thecook · 27/06/2016 00:18

Also you have no knowledge of elite athletics from your post

Inyournightdress · 27/06/2016 02:00

I will probably get flamed for this but I am sick of people complaining about being called a racist because they voted leave. Do you know what is worse than being called a racist? Being racially abused in the street because this vote to leave has legitimised open racism again 'foreigners'.

Sorry if I can't sympathise with people upset that their own actions have led them to being labelled by others as something they may or may not be. Because there are people being called a lot worse for things they cannot control.

MistressDeeCee · 27/06/2016 03:15

Majority of the Leave voters I saw spouting off on FB said they didnt vote that way due to immigration.

The Polish Centre at Hammersmith has been badly vandalized. & I was out at an event in Ladbroke Grove last night, leaving venue a group of Muslim women walked past and some guys across the road shouted out "yeah you'll all have to fuck off home soon, where's your fucking allah now?". I guess I was shocked as I've not witnessed disgusting racism close up for many years now

Im not really in the mood for "we're not all racist" right now. I believe all Leave voters had race and immigration at the forefront of their minds, nicely stirred up by the all-controlling media too. Why bother to deny it when its blatantly obvious.. "We've got our country back" seems to be a popular saying on social media now.

Im sure the Tories are ever grateful and will keep the working classes who voted Leave close to their hearts. Immigration will cease, there'll be an abundance of school places, social housing will spring up everywhere, UK will start to actually manufacture again and become a hive of industry, jobs for all, and the NHS magically restored. & Im quite sure the government will close borders and miss out on the huge income gained from visa fees and applications, and put many Home Office staff out of work. Then they'll start on their fat cat lawyer mates who do very nicely out of immigration appeals cases too. This little island will be the land of milk and honey soon enough

Im idly wondering tho about UK wanting the terms and conditions of a Brexit deal to be absolutely right, and also guarantees re future trade with Europe. I don't feel there's an understanding that Britain isn't an empire anymore, and also is shortly no longer to be part of Europe so in terms of trade deals etc they government may just be spitting in the wind, they don't have to be given what they want at all. If its Leave then leave, before it all starts to look rather embarassing

Iloveowls2 · 27/06/2016 03:50

I never fail to understand the absolute hypocrisy of people. Many leavers voted that way for completely different reasons other than immigration. It seems perfectly acceptable to label vast swathes of the electorate racist which is a label with some of the worst connotations in modern society. By effectively saying over 50% of the population are racist you are saying to the minority that that is actually socially acceptable and I think that is fueling much of the sudden rise in racist crime. Many people both sides, quite frankly voted for some bizzare reasons. I get some people are very scared, after all for a lot of people being under EU rule is the only thing they have known. But calling people think and racist when for nearly all the leave voters I know the reasons were constitutional is lazy, insulting and as I said hypocritical

MistressDeeCee · 27/06/2016 05:56

Britain is desperate to secure ongoing trade and financial deals with Europe. Which means Britain will need to join the single market, or the European Economic Area that encapsulates the EU and non-members such as Norway. But joining will mean accepting freedom of movement. So, between a rock and a hard place it seems; if Britain won't accept freedom of movement then its bye bye single market. Not good for government, and bankers at all

Still, I take it Leave voters would be fine with the freedom of movement aspect, since immigration/the number of foreigners already here isn't something they took into account at all when voting.

Brexit is here and a good many Leavers sound as confused as the government does. Oddly there doesn't appear to be any such thing as a Brexit plan or if there is, maybe Brexiters who voted assuredly in their unshakeable belief in government spin are privy to information that non-Leavers don't have.

As it is most Leavers seem to be effing & blinding all over the place. & the British government are already starting to look pretty stupid not just here, but in the eyes of the world. Maybe Xenophobia isn't going the be the promised paradise after all

TheFirie · 27/06/2016 06:06

I love the way everyone talks about Norway. A friend of mine lives in Oslo and she goes all the way to Sweden at 1.30 h drive for her grocery shopping because everything is sooooooo expensive in Norway. They can't even afford a second car.

I agree with the PP. The Leave camp looks pretty stupid. And they have no clue about the next steps.
