I'd given up watching these debate programmes but may tune in for one last hurrah.

Rucker Ruth v Brawler Boris

Who's your money on?

Or, you know, what squoosh said. Tony Parsons just reduces me to an incoherent rage.

AnneElliott · 21/06/2016 22:16

Ruth Davidson was very good I thought. TUC woman was very weak. Not impressed with Sadiq either, thought he seemed to lose his temper at one point.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 22:17

Really? So all Labour MPS are really likeable are they?

Confused

Er, what's the relevance of that? Who mentioned Labour politicians and their likeability?

No need to get snippy with me because I'm not a fan of that Leadsom woman. The fact of the matter is that the Tories recent triumph in Scotland is ALL down to Ruth Davidson. And that was no small feat for a country that often prides itself (or at least used to) on being anti Tory.

Those countries came out from behind the Iron curtain in the early 1990s, after the USSR collapsed. It wasn't the EU that brought democracy into those former Eastern Bloc nations - they democratised when they got out of the Soviet straightjacket.

The EU did not bring peace to Europe. NATO, as pointed out, had a role is establishing peace after the war (led by America, as was also pointed out) and in the Balkans.

The countries that have been war-mongerers in Europe for centuries have been Germany and Russia. Being in the EU - with an EU army - is not going to maintain peace. Far from it. One of the reasons I'm voting out.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 22:19

I know that RedToothBrush thank you, I'm merely saying that the Tories will catch a lot more flies with Davidson honey than with Leadsom vinegar. I presume they want to appeal to more people? That's usually a party's aim I believe.

why did the remain side put together such a weak group

leave was far more professional and confident in their replies

sadik khan isn't a particularly good public speaker, Ruth was good the other woman was useless

and allow Boris to give an end speech ....

LaurieFairyCake · 21/06/2016 22:19

The Tory party is going to split like a rancid ball sack

And who needs two Tory parties ? HmmGrin

squoosh · 21/06/2016 22:21

bold as brass? confused.

Yes bold as brass. Quite a well known phrase, sorry it's confused you. Every opportunity is an opportunity for Boris to promote his favourite cause. Himself.

not sniping at you op, I don't see people as blue or red sorry, just trying to understand someone who does Smile I am not a tribal party supporter.

IamSlavetotheEU · 21/06/2016 22:22

No Grin not the phrase, the fact it was paired with Boris.
I am not seeing the appeal of Boris.

Maybe if the Tories can tempt the lovely Neil Hamilton back from UKIP he can be the next leader.............

Nah I like the Ruth as bossy older sibling who thinks they know it all, and Leadsom as a been there seen it all wise Head mistress. ( or mum Wink)

flippinada · 21/06/2016 22:25

"The countries that have been war-mongerers in Europe for centuries have been Germany and Russia."

France and the UK have been fairly proactive in this area as well, historically speaking.

IamSlavetotheEU · 21/06/2016 22:25

Well Labour has already split like a .....hasn't it. Maybe they will meld and join forces and create a third credible party for us?

flippinada · 21/06/2016 22:26

What a charming image Laurie Envy Grin

IamSlavetotheEU · 21/06/2016 22:27

The nature of the countries has totally changed, we had kinds taking us to war to wag dick on big stage, people not happy.

We have learned - peace is prosperous, democracy is the way forward. The only dick wagger on the horizon is putin.

the way people talk you would think france, uk or germany were all begging for a fight but only the EU has bound us together?

LaurieFairyCake · 21/06/2016 22:29

Oh god, I'd forgotten about Neil Hamilton Hmm

He's such a massive tosspot. He'd be perfect for the new far right wing of the Tories

TulipsInAJug · 21/06/2016 22:30

Col Richard Kemp said this week 'It is an EU army that could bring about war.'

He said: ‘A vote to Remain would embolden Brussels in the goal of ever-closer union. This will include a European army.... And an EU army would undermine deterrence and cripple Nato, weakening European defences’.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 21/06/2016 22:32

squoosh I think I'd rather not be born. Grin

Turbinaria · 21/06/2016 22:33

I predict if we vote to Remain by a narrow margin then the disaffected working class labour vote will flock en mass towards UKIP, as will a sizeable number of eurosceptic Tory votes, so they would have a voice ( just as they did to the SNP in Scotland's). UKIP Could then even win a general election and we would have a second referendum in the next 5 years.
The 2015 UK General Election results:
UK vote share after 650 of 650 seats
Party%
CON36.9
LAB 30.4
UKIP12.6
LD 7.9
SNP4.7
GRN3.8

GhostofFrankGrimes · 21/06/2016 22:33

Col Richard Kemp said this week 'It is an EU army that could bring about war.'

and yet its remain who are accused of being project fear Hmm

RedToothBrush · 21/06/2016 22:33

I'm merely saying that the Tories will catch a lot more flies with Davidson honey than with Leadsom vinegar

I don't know that's true. They will appeal to different types of people. There are lots of people who will not have liked Davidson's forcefulness. I think that Leave are firmly after the grey vote and that tone will go down better with older voters than young one.

Boris was interesting. Every time Remain got a good point in, he was merely shaking his head. I thought Boris did a good job challenging Churchill but there wasn't a lot of substance to what he said. Not that, that's necessary if the Churchill thing wins votes anyway. But its interesting none the less. Do his killer debating skills travel well? Or do they appeal uniquely to a British audience?

Gisela started off well, then seemed to disappear.

TUC woman was good but alienated some quite clearly too.

I though Khan was great, but he went after Boris a few too many times and I'm not sure that will go down well. Just a little too shouty, but he knew his stuff.

Remain had more to prove and their case is harder. Leave just have to fire the troops into a rallying patriot chant and not a lot else. Which is scary in its own right.

TulipsInAJug · 21/06/2016 22:34

We have learned - peace is prosperous, democracy is the way forward. The only dick wagger on the horizon is putin.

Sadly, I don't know that you are correct. Democratic nations, worldwide, are a tiny minority. In European terms, some 'democracies' - Turkey and Russia (ha!) are anything but.

The last world war took place, in the grand historical timeline, only minutes ago. It was started and supported by a civilised nation.

Churchill recalled that after the Boer war everyone strongly believed that there would never, ever be another war in Europe. WW1 took everyone by surprise as they were convinced there would never be another war. And then WW2 took everyone by surprise again since they'd only just come out of one.
