I must be showing off how naive my green credentials are.

yes always. Agree with LL

I like bars of soap better and think they are probably more economical too. Gel seems to slide off me and go down the plug hole and those puff things you are supposed to use to that doesn't happen go all manky.

LavendersBlueDillyDilly · 21/05/2008 10:27

yes me. I seem to use a bottle of shower gel in about 3 showers, not sure what i do wrong.

Soap lasts better and feels cleaner also.

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 10:27

Bars of soap are old-fashioned?
I didn't know this. And I didn't know they were greener either.

So I've discovered all at once that I am antique and green in the shower.

mistlethrush · 21/05/2008 10:28

Me too. In fact I get HUGE bars of olive soap in the wholefood shop that I have to chop up into lumps that are a bit more manageable - its the only soap that really suits my skin. And its soooo much cheaper than the shower gel that dh insists on getting. And it doesn't make my hands smell perfumed either.

I've been thinking about returning to bars of soap for green and monetary reasons. This is going to sound thick, but, here goes, where do you keep it without it going gloopy and making sludge marks on things?

hifi · 21/05/2008 10:32

yuk, theres always pubes stuck in there.

GryffinGirl · 21/05/2008 10:32

I tried washing one of the puff things in the washing machine. Not a success. It unravelled and bunged up the drum so the washing machine repair man had to come. Another good reason for soap . For exfoliating, I use those gloves from Boots with soap.

Shells · 21/05/2008 10:33

How interesting. Why is it greener? I've always found soap makes my skin feel really dry.

I don't like the soapy film it leaves on the bathwater and it seems to slip and make a mess everywhere.

My friend has a huge Pears bar on an enamel dish and I always think that looks nice.

Apparently the old Aggie & Kim trick is to give your soap dish good clean & dry it .Then take a bit of kitchen roll & smear a light smudge of cooking oil on the dish & use the paper to take off the excess so ther is but a film left-it stops it going cruddy. Keep meaning to try it!

TW I'm a green antique too in that case!!

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 10:39

My nana used to make kitsch little tortoises out of foam: you squished up all your old soap fragments and fitted them into the foam tortoise shell.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 10:40

Me - feels cleaner!
I always wonder about these super non-allergenic, pure, kind, soap free bath cream or whatever - do they actually get you clean or are you just rubbing cream on yourself and rinsing it off?

GryffinGirl · 21/05/2008 10:42

LL - you're far more sensible than me . Wish I'd known about the sock.

My DH travels loads with work, so he always brings back the lovely hotel soaps. We've got enough stockpiled to last until the next millenium.

Carnival · 21/05/2008 10:54

The wee soap tray thing that I've tried, despite regular swooshing, seems always to get full of gloop. I think maybe it's the type of soap I'm using. Maybe a big bar of Pears or these guys come to my local Farmers' Market and I've bought their stuff as gifts, but never for myself (good reports from recipients). I think I'll give it a go.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 11:00

My soap tray is the same - I assume you do just have to wash them out regularly

SixSpotBurnet · 21/05/2008 11:03

Yes, we use bars of soap. DS1 used to get really rashy hands and wrists from using handwash gel - he has been much better since we switched to bars of Palmolive/Pears.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2008 11:04

SSB, both DH and I find that our hands go really dry/cracked/inflamed by liquid handwash

MargaretMountford · 21/05/2008 11:05

I love a bar of P;ears soap and also like the medicinally scented coal tar !

Chocolateteapot · 21/05/2008 11:12

We use bars. I like the handmade ones which have been superfatted ie a small amount of oil is left behind in the chemical reaction that makes soap and that the glycerine that is made isn't stripped out, my skin isn't as dry then as using gels etc.

We also use solid shampoo bars which I now prefer to liquid shampoo.

Our soap tray has rungs like on a ladder so the water drains off, you just have to wipe them with a damp cloth every so often.

SixSpotBurnet · 21/05/2008 11:14

I love Pears soap! I adore the smell. My mum wouldn't buy it when we were little so I still get a little thrill from buying it! [very sad person emoticon]
