I must be showing off how naive my green credentials are.

i do agree with that - always give it a good rinse befoer I use it

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 12:52

re soap on holiday - put it one of those little net bags meant for laundry tablets, then you can hang it up to dry before packing it

actually the household soap we take away for clothes washing lives in the net bag as it imparts a rather good scrubbing action...

Running my soap over their bits! . I don't do that. I get some lather of the soap with my hands and wash with that. I've never rubbed myself all over with a bar of soap.

6spot, totally with you on the Thrill Of Pears Soap

MargaretMountford · 21/05/2008 12:58

Enid - you are a very stylish person with all these smart soap products - just my kinds girl !

kiskideesameanoldmother · 21/05/2008 12:58

i lather my soap bar on a bath glove from the body shop. I have a huge piece of loofah I bought in the market in Cyprus which i keep meaning to cut up into sizable chunks.

I remember having Pears soap as a little girl and thinking is was the best thing ever - clear soap with a lovely amber colour and the scent...doesn't quite smell the same these days but still great.
I remember friends having magnets that you stuck in soap and attached to things hanging off the tiles in the bathroom

Soap is old-fashioned?? I learn something new every day on MN!

One glance at all those petrochemical byproducts on the back of a bottle of gel puts me right off, plus the waste of resources in the actual bottle.

Plus you can't scent your clothes with a bottle of shower gel. I put bars of soap in with clothes to give a gentle fragrance and it also hardens the soap to make it last longer.

Here in Africa, they say the only essential cleansing product is a bar of truly old-fashioned green soap. It will wash hair, body and clothes and clean your house as well.

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 13:22

that's the stuff I was talking about, sue

RubySlippers · 21/05/2008 13:39

i like soap a lot

these from taylor of old bond street (chammomile are delish]]

and they don't aggravate mine or DS's sensitive skin

DH loves the old original mint/lemon/lime source stuff which is find way too over powering

suedonim · 21/05/2008 14:16

Clever idea about the net bag, MrsBadger!

DrippingLizzie · 21/05/2008 14:19

I love using soaps because their smells are so evocative and bring back all those childhood bathtime memories...Pears, Imperial Leather and Zest are great (although latter strips about five layers off my skin...a cheap acid peel, if you will).

KashaSarrasin · 21/05/2008 14:28

Soap user here . I quite like the Lush ones but they're still quite chemically, so most of the time I use Savon d'Alep or the shea butter and baobab soap from Akamuti, both of which are "real" soap - the Akamuti ones are fab actually!

Alishanty · 24/05/2008 14:24

Another pears soap fan here although we do sometimes use original source shower gel.

sushistar · 25/05/2008 23:11

I like soap, but we have no shower, only a bath, and dh leaves the bar floating around the bath every time so it dissapears really quickly and leaves horrendus scum. So now we use ash+Satin+Soap++473mls.html this

sushistar · 25/05/2008 23:13

damn i meant to link that!

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 23:13

we have a regional soapmaker here called Purdies that does lovely glycerine soaps.

margoandjerry · 25/05/2008 23:17

Glad other people use Pears. I always fear they will stop making it because of the march of shower gel but it seems like they're doing just fine. A big new bar of Pears is so lovely and such a clean smell

expatinscotland · 25/05/2008 23:19

DD1 loves Pears! She likes glycerine soaps - I get her ones to put in her drawers.

I swapped shower gel and liquid soap for soap bars, shampoo and conditioner for bars and bubble bath for bath salts (in a cardboard box) this time last year. It's been easy to stick to, and probably costs less in total (shampoo and conditioner bars are quite expensive).

I reckon we were getting through about 2 plastic bottles a week in the bathroom, so that's over 100 fewer plastic bottles in landfill just in the one room.

I also switched to washing powder in a box and try to buy things like food and makeup in glass, card or metal packaging rather than plastic.

Cynderella · 05/01/2019 12:17

@Blackink Any recommendations for bath salts. I've experimented with bulk buying Epsom Salts and infusing with lavender and essential oils, but it's far from luxurious.

Also, I'm happy to use soap, but soap scum in the bath makes more work. So tempted to buy bubble bath, but resisting. Don't want to use the Lush bars because it works out too expensive.

BlackInk · 07/01/2019 10:48

Cynderella I usually buy the Radox ones as they seem to stock them everywhere. They're ok, but I do miss the bubbles and have been looking out for bubble bath in a glass bottle...

The Radox ones are in a cardboard box, but it does have a plastic lining I think.
