How can I get my sil to stop using pampers and those hideous smelly orange nappy bags?

that's it really. Gorgeous new baby, lovely family. Very right on in so many ways, so I was totally shocked to see them using VASELINE, PAMPERS and those repulsive orange nappy bags that do not biodegrade in 600 years. I didn't say anything, as thought - aw, they are still getting used to things - but then I thought, no somewhere along the line they have made a DECISION to do this. I really want to say something but a)obviously it's not my baby and b)I remember when I had dd1 and my sister tried to make me take all her old manky reusable nappies and I rebelled, although only to Moltex.

you mad mad lot

VoluptuaGoodshag · 01/05/2007 12:54

Enid I was wondering the same - is vaseline the spawn of satan or something?

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 12:55

If it doesn't penetrate the skin, though, why's it used as a moisturiser?

arfishy · 01/05/2007 13:52

Please don't all be standing at Heathrow ready to stone me for taking my huge long flight from Sydney on Friday. I'm sorry . Shall I tell my mother that we shall no longer visit her as her visits are contributing to the decimation of the planet and it's all her fault quite frankly? [tempted emoticon]

Anyways, can you try to persuade her by saying that you got some free samplems of some biodegradble or reusable stuff and would she like to try t? Helps the planet and all that. A lightbulb might come on. She might just not have thought about it in the kerfuffle of new motherhood. It took me a while to cotton on to the eco stuff, especially as the rest of the stuff is so advertised and in your face - like everybody uses Johnson & Johnson and Avent. Evil stuff.

Vaseline is a barrier - it holds the moisture in, which is how a lot of moisturisers work.

moisturizers
On this definition vaseline is probably an occlusive type moisturiser - Oh the things you learn on MN!!

That is probably why it is recommended for mild burns (once they have cooled down) as I believe wet healing is often recommended for burns, though tbh I'd never heard that as a use for vaseline until today.

All I know is that when I have a sore nose/top of mouth from a cold, the vaseline protects it from the gunk coming out (sorry if TMI) and gives the skin a chance to heal.

lazy cow - thats what my mother used to do to me, right under my nose, i was only five for heavens sake, and as you can see - its scared me for life

Lazycow · 02/05/2007 12:16

ah lucy - maybe I should stop using it on ds then - I don't want him getting a phobia about vaseline !!

lucyellensmum · 02/05/2007 15:08

Lazy cow - well its worth considering, do you really want a vaseline phobia on your concience? He will only throw it in your face when he is a teenager and listing the reasons why this world is so cruel!

Another one for the therapy jar. It's getting quite full actually and he's only 2.5yrs old
