How can I get my sil to stop using pampers and those hideous smelly orange nappy bags?

that's it really. Gorgeous new baby, lovely family. Very right on in so many ways, so I was totally shocked to see them using VASELINE, PAMPERS and those repulsive orange nappy bags that do not biodegrade in 600 years. I didn't say anything, as thought - aw, they are still getting used to things - but then I thought, no somewhere along the line they have made a DECISION to do this. I really want to say something but a)obviously it's not my baby and b)I remember when I had dd1 and my sister tried to make me take all her old manky reusable nappies and I rebelled, although only to Moltex.

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:17

Gobble, where do you get off telling God to mind his own business

Aloha · 27/04/2007 17:19

Professor John Hawk, honorary consultant dermatologist at St Thomas' Hospital, London, explains: "Vaseline is an occlusive moisturiser, which means that it creates a barrier on the surface of the skin. This is beneficial because it helps the skin to retain moisture, which is crucial to the healing process, and also because it keeps wounds sterile by preventing harmful bacteria from getting in."

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:21

but what about the ones that are already there!!!

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:23

but anyway, mums have been putting vaseline on bums (and under noses!) for years and there are no people running around without bottoms so i guess its ok. You have to watch these honorary consultants though, they could just be celebrities given an honorary post! lol

Twiglett · 27/04/2007 17:24

oh sheesh

Tell you what alhambra .. why don't you practice on me .. I have 2 children and used pampers and those little orange bags with both

I'm in the main fairly 'right-on' too ... go on .. try to pose the question to me

Gobbledigook · 27/04/2007 17:24

I've been using Pampers for 6 years solid now.

I'm a cheapskate though and use Tesco value bags that don't smell. Is that OK?

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:26

no gobbler anything but tesco!

only if its a stick that has fallen naturally from the tree and hasn't been cut .. oh and tied with twine I assume

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:30

OP gone quiet bet she wishes she never started this one..........

On a serious note, im sure we are all intelligent enough to know we need to look after the environment and "right on" ( i just love that) to do what we can within limits that fit our lifestyle.

or suffocated with her orange nappy bags!

Aloha · 27/04/2007 17:38

I'm just saying there is absolutely nothing wrong, dangerous or harmful about blooming harmless old vaseline! And unless the OP wants to buy her sil a complete set of reusable nappies plus a subscription to a laundry service as a new baby present, I think she should keep her thoughts to herself.
Actually, tbh, I think it is OK to say, provided you know each other well and are friendly, 'You know, I don't know if you have thought of reusable nappies. I thought they'd be a nightmare but I found them really easy. I have a load you could have to try if you want.' But if there is the slightest suspicion of preaching and moralizing, then that would pee anyone off.

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:41

i know aloha I do have a bit of a phobia about it though, seriously, i mean fancy making me have it under my nose, these days someone would call social services

Aloha · 27/04/2007 17:43

I love it! Use it on my lips....and I bet that is spooking you out now!

Also good for horrid heels.

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 17:51

hubby uses it on his lips, when i go to MIL there is a HUGE pot of it in the bathroom - makes me shudder it honestly does. Is it really good for heels? mine are terrible at the moment due to crocs feet! I was actually going to start a thread...........hey ho. I just bought really expensive heel cream too - grrrrr

Any other uses ?

ScummyMummy · 27/04/2007 18:04

Love vaseline too. It's good that it doesn't biodegrade, imo- that way a big pot can last you for years and years.

I think that, basically, pretty much no one in the world ever really likes being told what to do or that what they're doing is a load of old shite. Unless they have specifically requested direction, of course, or are doing something dangerous and even then they may baulk at what is said. Success in social relationships is predicated on only telling/advising people what to do or what not to do when it is absolutely necessary, imo. So I would leave your sil well alone, alhambra. i know your intentions are great but I do strongly suspect environmental activism directed at a postnatal mother could easily end in tears.

lucyellensmum · 27/04/2007 18:57

scummymummy, you are tormenting me - that pot in MIL bathroom could have been there when DP lived there 15 years ago!!!! god help me

Aloha · 27/04/2007 19:00

I love it when, just as a debate is getting scratchy, someone confounds you by being funny. Lucyellensmum, I salute you.

hana · 27/04/2007 20:00

back to the bags
why do people use them? why not just chuck the nappy in the bin? When we're using disposables I do, if it's pooey I flush the poo, then put nappy in bin (outside if still smell)
why the bags?

Nikki76 · 27/04/2007 20:08

The sodding council have decided to only collect household rubbish on a fortnightly basis...I dread to think what the smell would be like if I didn't put DS nappies in a scented bag! We already had flies around the bins last summer cos it was so hot!!

Mud · 27/04/2007 20:10

holy cow. that is the most self-obsessed openign to a thread Ive ever read. You do realise that the environment agency actually did a researchproject in wales and found that along the whole produciton cycle from start to the end there was actually little to choose from between disposables and reusables in terms of environmental damage

but besides the point if you want a elationship I'd take your judgementael head off and put on a caring on

Pannacotta · 27/04/2007 20:13

Don't get the nappy bags either, no need if you flush away the poo as you are supposed to...
Isn't there also the ethical issue with using Pampers, ie they're made by Proctor and Gamble who are boycotted by many as they openly admit that rodents are used in their ?product safety research?, as well as cats and dogs in pet food experiments, not very PC IMO...
