…. And not paying tax? Earning around £100-200 extra per week on top of their normal pays job.

has anyone ever done this? Did anything happen?

No, I wouldn't report you.

You are working, and you are making an effort to better your situation.

People scamming benefits, yes I would report you.

I work with a lot of people who have just been given a pay rise, and some of them have asked to reduce their hours, so that their benefits are not affected.*

So, lazy arses deserve to be reported. People working hard and earning money, no they don't deserve to be reported.

*The benefit system is broken, and it is no longer a system for those in dire need, and it is abused on a mass scale.

hattie43 · 29/03/2026 09:40

The thing is people no longer feel ‘ we’re in it together ‘ . If people who are struggling can earn a bit of CIH then that’s their business . People working have huge amounts of financial stress that benefits people are protected from . If you work full time and can’t feed your family properly then good on you .

MajesticWhine · 29/03/2026 09:42

I wouldn’t report.
But I would judge. I pay my taxes, including those outside of PAYE and so should everyone else. Having a side hustle doesn’t mean someone is desperate or poor or deserves to be let off the extra tax.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 29/03/2026 09:43

No absolutely not

AgeingBanana · 29/03/2026 09:53

No, it’s none of my business.

If someone was going to get hurt as a result (they were doing something harmful, or they were working in unsafe conditions) then I would report it.

Iocanepowder · 29/03/2026 09:57

No. On the basic principle that the taxman pisses my tax money up the wall.

singlemum2025 · 28/03/2026 19:21

this post could be about me, single mum, dad doesn’t pay anything towards the kids despite it going through csa, I am already working but do a bit of extra cleaning on the side which basically pays for our food! Without it we would be at food banks. I do feel guilty about it but with the rising cost of everything I can’t afford not to!

Don't feel bad. You're doing cleaning to put food on the table to compensate for their useless father.

I'd happily pay you cash in hand & not expect you to declare it.

@dammit88 for such a small amount, no I wouldn't report it.

Elanol · 29/03/2026 10:04

Another no

Vindictive? If you like the black economy causing us all to pay more tax rock on.

Behave! Big business avoiding tax impacts greatly. Individuals trying to earn a little extra when things are tight and the tax system is unforgiving for those who can't afford accountants to fiddle their contribution are a drop in the ocean.

Your attitude is just spiteful. So yeah, vindictive is correct.

I think a 2nd job is different.

It is absolutely rife though. We are roughly 250K through a house renovation and basically every tradesperson has offered a discount for cash in hand.

I wonder if it is how all these guys get out of paying child support as they aren't declaring their income.

It is, it’s what the father of my children has done for years to pay the minimum amount, whilst earning an above average salary and living incredibly comfortably

This.
A couple of former friends openly declared that they are named as employees on their partner's company accounts when they do nothing at all.
Others have set up companies to have their wages paid into when they are straightforward employees.
I have slowly discarded them!

Greenwitchart · 29/03/2026 11:19

No I would not because the cost of living is so high.

Also our taxes are being misused all the time by sussessive government, such as paying for daft schemes like mandatory IDs that no one wants or voted for... Not to mention the billions that were wasted during Covid.

Rich people and big companies always find ways to minimise the amount that they pay.

So no, I would never report an individual who works hard and is just trying to make enough money to live.

This is a poor attitude. It’s a lot of people doing this that deeply affects the economy overall. Big business avoiding tax is bad too. Both can be wrong. What do you count as ok? What is your acceptable limit for earning a little extra?
the tax free allowance is there for low earners. Everyone else should be paying what is due.

Missey85 · 29/03/2026 11:25

No why would you? Leave them alone there not hurting anyone just trying to get by like the rest of us

firstofallimadelight · 29/03/2026 11:26

I’m in agreement but also finding all the support laughable given the amount of hatred on here for benefit claimants who are likely poorer than the person planning to commit tax fraud.

ClaredeBear · 29/03/2026 11:27

You’re better off focusing on hyper energies on the real problem, like massive corporations.

Stickytoffeetartt · 29/03/2026 11:31

That person is obviously a grafter so no way. They are more entitled to their hard-earned money than the can't be arsed to work so I get benefits crew imo.

ladyamy · 29/03/2026 11:36

No

I'd count someone struggling on low pay trying to top up their bills account without sacrificing any to be wasted by government misspending ok.

I find those who would report someone in that situation to be the ones with a bad attitude.

I'm currently in the very fortunate position not to have to do the same, but wouldn't dream of judging anyone less fortunate from doing so if it means they can afford some basics for their family.

ginasevern · 29/03/2026 11:56

@dammit88 Why don't you expend your energy reporting the royal family for not paying capital gains tax, corporation tax and good old Wills refusing to declare how much tax he pays on his £30 million (and the rest) Duchy income. Now that really would bring some serious money into the country's coffers. It's a good place to start if you're feeling so terribly righteous about tax evasion.

Tax evasion and benefit fraud in the black economy is far higher than tax avoidance by big companies and billionaires. It's a numbers game. Millions of people fiddling small amounts is a bigger number than a small number of corporations/people fiddling big amounts.

Satarn · 29/03/2026 12:29

I know a few people that do this and done it.
Im one of them i had to live somehow.
Times are hard and there not getting any easier.

saraclara · 29/03/2026 12:32

I pay my cleaner cash in hand, so no.

On the other hand I'd love for this government to get some tax from the billionaires and their companies who manage to not pay a penny.

I'm sorry but that's just bullshit.

Please by all means provide some data to support how individual tax evasion (this isn't about benefit fraud but nice attempt at derailing to prop up your claim) surpasses the huge tax avoidance perpetrated by Amazon and other massive turnover corporations.
