Would you report someone for working a second job cash in hand

dammit88 · 28/03/2026 19:05

…. And not paying tax? Earning around £100-200 extra per week on top of their normal pays job.

has anyone ever done this? Did anything happen?

GinToBegin · 28/03/2026 19:38

Nope.

Everything is turning to shit, the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. I’d rather big businesses pay their fair share than people who are being hammered already being hammered some more - and all for a minuscule amount compared to what could be recouped from the big tax avoiders.

Stuckforlong · 28/03/2026 19:39

No

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/03/2026 19:40

therockingbird · 28/03/2026 19:19

No! I’m more bothered by the ever increasing privately diagnosed adhd’ers claiming they can’t leave the house to work..

Your dismissiveness says more about your lack
of understanding than their condition.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/03/2026 19:41

£100-200 per week! No I wouldn’t. HMRC has much bigger fish to fry.

ainsleysanob · 28/03/2026 19:42

Course I wouldn’t.

Pricelessadvice · 28/03/2026 19:42

No. They have another job that I assume they pay taxes on, and they are getting off their backsides and working 2 jobs to survive.
Far more respect for that than those who are too bone idle to work or use their anxiety or ADHD as an excuse and take tax payers hard earned cash.

scrambledangle · 28/03/2026 19:42

Never

DeedlessIndeed · 28/03/2026 19:45

I think a 2nd job is different.

It is absolutely rife though. We are roughly 250K through a house renovation and basically every tradesperson has offered a discount for cash in hand.

I wonder if it is how all these guys get out of paying child support as they aren't declaring their income.

BatchCookBabe · 28/03/2026 19:58

@dammit88

Are you going to come back and answer the question 'how do you know they are not paying tax?'

Also, is it £100 or £200 a week they are earning? Big difference.

And no, I wouldn't report them in this situation.

(Methinks the OP isn't going to return somehow. Wink)

dammit88 · 28/03/2026 20:01

It’s me.

OP posts:
NormasArse · 28/03/2026 20:03

How do you know they don’t declare it? I have three jobs and declare them all, but nobody (nosy) would know that, would they?

NormasArse · 28/03/2026 20:03

Sorry- just saw your update 😂

Drats · 28/03/2026 20:03

No, would have done once upon a time. Now I realise that the working person is taxed to death and the rich are getting richer. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to survive.

gamerchick · 28/03/2026 20:04

No, the bugger is still being taxed in some way.

Onadark · 28/03/2026 20:04

dammit88 · 28/03/2026 20:01

It’s me.

I see. Well as you can tell from this thread most people wouldn't. However, I wouldn't tell anyone in real life it wasn't declared. They don't need to know anyway but it only takes one petty argument for someone to dob you in.

Badbadbunny · 28/03/2026 20:06

Yes, I would and I have. The black economy costs the country tens of billions of pounds in lost tax revenue and benefit fraud every year, not to mention child maintenance avoidance.

Yes, child maintenance avoidance, tax avoidance, benefit fraud. Also don't forget no come back for dodgy tradesmen if you pay in cash without an invoice/receipt.

HotSoupBowl · 28/03/2026 20:09

No, it probably costs them to actually do it in some way, travel /equipment , time, who knows.

I make the same on my second job, but I report every penny and expense because I know some arse would grass me 😂

MrsColinRobinson · 28/03/2026 20:09

No! Why on earth would you?

It's shocking anyone would contemplate being so vindictive.

Hardly.. as a parent of two nhs diagnosed boys with autism the sudden incline of adults who are throwing this shit in the ring makes my blood boil. Totally understand the need to get the support of a child but an adult finding a way to fleece the system baffles me.

HotSoupBowl · 28/03/2026 20:10

Rock on, just make sure you don’t have enemies 😂

catipuss · 28/03/2026 20:10

TrashHeap · 28/03/2026 19:06

Times are hard, no I wouldn't.

Times are hard for everyone, why shouldn't they pay tax like everyone else?

tnorfotkcab · 28/03/2026 20:10

No.

Vindictive? If you like the black economy causing us all to pay more tax rock on.

hattie43 · 28/03/2026 20:12

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 28/03/2026 19:09

No.

I used to feel quite strongly that it was wrong, but now I think we’re living in a do what you have to do society, at least they’re contributing some services in the process.

This is how I feel . I’ve always paid my dues because I’ve had a career but now I wouldn’t blame anyone as you have to look after yourself and do what you need to survive . If taxes were paid on things people believe in it would be different.
