Homosexuality in the Classroom.

My daughter is nine. Yesterday she came home from school and said that her teacher had told the class that she was a lesbian. The teacher is about to have one of these civil partnerships and according to my daughter told the class that girls could marry girls and boys could marry boys if they wanted to.It was according to her entirely natural. This seems like corruption to me. I don't want my daughter exposed to this kind of lifestyle.

I am very upset about this and don't know what to do. Am I over reacting? Should the school have warned us that the teacher was going to do this? Do you think I should make a complaint to the school?

"Also of course it cannot add anything to the sum of human acheivement or knowledge as it is a biological dead end"

Now nemo, that's unfair... if we all took that attitude, then you would have been wiped out long ago.

Oh, and it's 'achievement' btw.

mmrred · 28/11/2009 22:26

Haven't you got human achievement and knowledge a little muddled with, well mindless biology, Nemowho? Do you seriously not know about any of the wonderful things brought to humankind by people who didn't have children?

HUMan's intellect also strives to learn to live with tolerance and peace, and to eliminate cruelty and injustice. Perhaps you are just a little bit obsessed with orifices and it would profit you to contemplate how little loving our fellow human beings has to do with sex.

mumtofour · 28/11/2009 22:26

wow 498 posts this has got people attention! haven't read all of them I will confess but heres my slant on it....Homosexuality is part of society and part of many peoples lives. We send our children to school not only for ABC's but to learn about life! The sexuality of a person in no way should affect your judgements or opinions placed on them. Our children need to grow and learn their own opinions and their own values in life and they learn this through experiencing life. I think the teacher needs a pat on the back, that she and the school behind her are not afraid to discuss the topic of homosexuality with their childen. Get your child talking, get them questioning why and talking to you honestly as this is an invaluable thing. Kids need to know about life, about the differences in life... topics should not be taboo and so therefore no you should not complain. If you are concerned that you were not told about what was going to be disclosed then yes you could talk and say you would have liked prior warning of the topic but complain no as this is life and I am sure you want your kids to live and learn in a real world..

PMSL at nemowho's description of my sex life as a 'poor substitute for the natural method of copulation, relying on substitutions of the male organ'. Sounding smokin' hot!

Seriously, one of the big satisfactions of my life has been seeing how public attitudes have changed since I first came out, 26 years ago. It gives me real hope for my daughters. Despite what nemo, daftpunk and the OP have tried to achieve, this thread has cheered me up immensely. Thank you, mumsnetters, for your great good sense and compassion.

"Waah, you're not agreeing with my bigotted views! It can't be that I'm a bigot, it's got to be that it's a vast liberal conspiracy against me! It's not fair!!!"

Meh.

Nemo ( who has taken up the gauntlet where DP left off ) whilst the whole 'animal kingdom' argument trips off your tongue, you have to remember that we are not animals, we do not just procreate with the nearest member of the opposite sex to have children (well I don't anyway). So, the human race is far more complex and that is what makes us civilised human beings, you don't see many donkeys making cups of tea or talking about their feelings do you?

You can't bring the whole debate down to one aspect of what you see as being our reason for being on the earth - we humans are more complicated (well you may not be but I am)

Nemo, if you're so worried about "inappropriate orifices" I hope you don't engage in oral sex or kissing.

GrumpyWhenWoken · 29/11/2009 00:45

nemowho do you mean to be so offensive?
