From what I have seen wordsmith it's because they think the weather will be nicer in June and the beaches less crowded, but that's only my experience.

Enid · 10/06/2005 12:43

but there's low incomes and low incomes wordsmith. Maybe you can't afford a foreign holiday in holiday time but you probably could afford a cheaper camping holiday in this country..

batters

how depressing about sports day

puddle · 10/06/2005 12:44

In my experience it's not to do with affordability, it's more 'we could do 2 weeks in spain in the holidays but if we go in term time we can have a fortnight in Florida'.

Or we can have a mark warner without the pool being overcrowded in term time but if we go in the holidays we might have to book something without a kids club at all!'

Enid · 10/06/2005 12:45

yes I agree

but two weeks in the kids club at Mark Warner is very possibly like school but with less friends

Enid · 10/06/2005 12:46

rofl batters

i am competitive and therefore looking forward to sports day

Marina · 10/06/2005 12:46

Utterly, batters. Why else would I have spent a nipple-traumatising 45 mins underground in the Pas de Calais recently so that ds could draw a picture of a sodding freeeeezing V3 launch tunnel...

puddle · 10/06/2005 12:46

But that's for another thread Enid

peckarollover · 10/06/2005 12:46

Im taking DD out in 2 weeks for a week when we go on our "honeymoon" sorry cod!

I justify it to myself that she has never been off and she is only in reception and is flying ahead with everything.

Enid · 10/06/2005 12:47

yes must stop myself

Yes that's right Enid - why should they have the opportunity for a foreign holiday? Stick them in a tent in Clacton instead. How patronising.

Like I said we are getting a tent for next year, that's not the point. And I wan't talking about going away for a foreign holiday anyway - it was any sort of holiday. I do know single mums who simply can't afford anything in school hols - as for France being only £50 more expensive - we're not talking in that ballpark!

ds is already preparing his rationale for coming last in all events in this year's sports day (and no girlfriend to slow down to a moonwalk to make him look less obvious this year either, she emigrated, sensible girl). "Can you think of anyone in my class who is slower than me mummy?"
But he doesn't mind as he really does seem to understand that taking part is what counts.
I think a competitive sports day responsibly handled by the school helps children understand that there are some situations in life where you are not a winner.

homemama · 10/06/2005 12:50

I think we all just do the best for our kids and try not to judge when other people do the same. Of course, ideally, we would all go out of school but the travel industry doesnt make that an easy choice. All I had wanted to say was that teacher's do understand and we keep work/send work home, make into extra lessons cause we try to work with parents.

Marina · 10/06/2005 12:50

pecka but that is an exceptional one-off. Honeymoons are special

Sorry about the grammer! maybe my lessons aren't so good!

homemama · 10/06/2005 12:53

GRAMMER! tut tut grammar

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 12:53

I agree with Wordsmith

michellemcmanus · 10/06/2005 12:54

mumsnet
not judge?
