I don't see whats wrong with this. I'd do it.

misdee · 10/06/2005 11:08

anyone feeling abit 'judged'?

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:08

trixie has just returned from mauritius - left 2 days before half term and missed the last four days.

So therefore missed class photo AND didnt know there was a project to make seaside containers today so didn't have the right stuff and cried

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 11:10

Don't worry Misdee I agree with you.

IMO if they are not mising anything vitally important then a week off in term time is fine. Especially if it is near the end of term as they seem to do bugger all anyway then.

bubblerock · 10/06/2005 11:11

We're actually allowed 2 weeks out of the school term to go on holiday because a lot of the parents have Hotels or work in Tourism - we're at our busiest at weekends and School Holidays (Not that we can actually afford to go on holiday)

puddle · 10/06/2005 11:12

Many teachers can't afford the prices in school holiday time either. I can't imagine parents being happy if they take the time off though.

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:12

days out and sports day towards then end of our summer term, sports day deliberately two days before the end to deter 'escapees'

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:12

think we are allowed 10 days out but that is being stopped soon

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:13

ah but do you take sweets in

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 11:14

Sports day at our school is pants so I would mind if they missed it.

I would much rather my kids miss a fe days of school and get a holiday than not have one at all. It is not that we are being tight or anything, we just simply cannot afford to go in school hols.

Holidays for us have to be about £200 and i've never found one costing that much in a school holiday.

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:15

well being hardcore Enid I would say don't go on holiday then.

We've had a few years when we havent been and its not the end ofthe world

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 11:16

Well then we would never go if that was the case, and i mean never.

cupcakes · 10/06/2005 11:17

Can't see the problem here - other than the sweet giving afterwards. So they miss a few things at school - loads of children miss things because of illness. One week abroad would probably give the child a much richer experience and memories than one week in school. So long as they aren't missing anything vital how can it be a problem?
Touch of the green eye perhaps?

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:17

i do agree that it is shite that the holiday prices rocket in the holidays

sweetheart · 10/06/2005 11:19

Don't you think a child can learn just as much from experiencing a different culture/language/food etc etc as they can from sitting in a classroom.

I personally don't see the problem with taking time off - and I'm one of those horrible mothers that would take sweets in!!!!!

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:22

why on earth would you take sweets in?

I would slink in and try not to draw attention to it personally.

think the culture argument is pants personally. we went to Dorset every year when i was small and I have still managed to be 'well-travelled'.

All the children in DS class bring back sweets when they go on holiday whether it is in the school holiday or not {obviously not the summer cos that would be a bit excessive}

When we went to LA @ Easter we got some sweeets for the class.

Sweets are also given out for birthdays

There are NO allergies just one child that doesn't like choc

IMHO it is a lovely idea.

Both of my parents were teachers DH is a teacher so we have to go in school holidays

BUT I do NOT have a prob if others go in term time

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:23

thank god they don't do that at dd1's school

sweetheart · 10/06/2005 11:26

I wouldn't bring back normal sweets - I would bring back something from that countries culture so that my dd could explain it to the other children in her class.

We once ad a family go to China/Japan?!?!?! - they brought back seaweed for the children to try.

I think it's lovely to teach your child something about a different country and then let them pass on thier new knowledge to their classmates.

I am in complete agreement with Enid, I have really fond memories of camping holidays when I was a child. And that's what mine will get most probably. But I am definitely a minority at DD's school, most people take them out (and bring sweets back !)

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:33

no sorry, culture argument doesn't wash

NotQuiteCockney · 10/06/2005 11:35

I don't care when other people's kids take their holidays (although I don't think I'd take my kids off in term time, generally).

But I would totally mind the sweets. I don't like DS1 having sugary stuff, I never give him candy. He gets quite hyper on sweet stuff, and I'd just rather he ate, you know, food. (And if everyone who went on hols did this, along with all the bloody birthday cakes, he'd be having sweets every week, at least.)

michellemcmanus · 10/06/2005 11:42

if school on ly consists of finger painting why send them at all?
and the one swho take holidays always moan abot training days and teachers being ill - yet take triqei off att he drop of a hat
