never heard of people bringing sweets in because they have been on holiday. how odd. why?
most we get is a cake or two at school if it is someone's birthday (and not everyone does it) which I think is nice because they all love the candles and singing and the birthday girl/boy loves the attention...

michellemcmanus · 10/06/2005 11:43

enid im wiht oyu I cant afford to go to mauritus
so i dont go
these are hte popel who then moan when they ar in debt.

dont wate MY mone keeping aplace open for YOUR kid whn they are on holiday

But with a class of 27 children

That is only 26 birthdays + his

Not very many of those children go on holiday apart from in summer holiday {like I said earlier the summer holiday ones don't bring in sweets}

They are at school for 40 weeks so that is not very often that the children would be eating sweets is it?

You can always tell the teacher you don't want your child to have the sweet

At DS school they are given out as the children leave the classroom

michellemcmanus · 10/06/2005 11:48

I could
its not hte end of the world ( not hlike hte holiay istsef) just if it ends up being chewing guma nd he sticks it to his tummy button..! ( see other thread)

I agree with Enid too. Someone the other day told me she was taking her child out of school because 'they couldn't afford a Mark Warner holiday at peak time'. So do a cheaper one. Oh, and 'because it's so busy during the school holidays'.

I think it gives the message to the other kids that school is optional and that the school condones this view.

WideWebWitch · 10/06/2005 11:52

It is very odd this taking sweets in because you've been on holiday isn't it? Where the heck has it come from?

sweetheart · 10/06/2005 11:52

I'm not in debt - I have a good job and earn good money.

I don't moan about inset days

I don't moan when the teacher has a day off (which happens quite regularly as she is still training)

I would take a holiday during term time. Aside from other issues I have mentioned why should I line the pockets of the companies who think it's OK to charge extortionate rates just because it's the school holidays.

Please don't make huge sweepeing Generalizations as they are usually incorrect!!!!!

homemama · 10/06/2005 11:53

just thought i'd mention that from a prim. teacher's point of view, we don't mind kids having time off in term as long as they're not falling behind. I always try to prepare an adhoc lesson based on the country they've visited and ask them to bring something 'to show' back. They help run the lesson and they feel like the star of the show. Curriculum can be v. boring for 8yr olds!HOWEVER, please not during SATS week! You'd be surprised how many parents do this!

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:53

fgs - don't make them the star of the show.

how on earth do you think that makes kids feel who arent going on holiday?

sorry but idiotic IMO.

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 11:54

Can I just add that we do cheap holidays not a fortnight abroad. It's a cheap caravan park in wales or something, which even in tern time is sometimes a struggle for us to afford.

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:54

And I know that the teachers at dd1's school take a very dim view on it and are constantly pleading with parents not to do it in the newsletter

nutcracker · 10/06/2005 11:55

Also want to add that my dd's have to keep a diary if we are away and make a scrap book thingy. I don't just let them escape with no work at all.

cupcakes · 10/06/2005 11:55

I think one arranged holiday a year is hardly challenging school attendance. We have many more parents whose children turn up irregulary - time taken off for very mild colds, to buy shoes etc.
I have not taken ds out of school for a holiday but would consider it in future. Our school has the policy of considering applications for holidays and it is at their discretion whether the child will suffer because of the lost time.

RTKangaMummy · 10/06/2005 11:55

When we go away we usually bring home a pressie for Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles

So we just see it as being the same idea

If you don't want to do it then don't have to

But why be angry about those who do want to???

Enid · 10/06/2005 11:57

its not the work its the feelign that somehow school is optional

anyway I reserve my right to be sniffy about it

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 10/06/2005 12:00

I too reserve my right to be sniffy about it. it's just an odd thing to do imo.

RTKangaMummy · 10/06/2005 12:00

So your problem is taking them out of school rather than the sweets

WideWebWitch · 10/06/2005 12:01

Pre school entirely different, I agree.

michellemcmanus · 10/06/2005 12:01

i just dont understand the link
holiday sweets is it " outy you poor childern who hadv to wait tiill august? ( or whose parents can afford holidays?)
odnt get the sentiment

OP posts:
sweetheart · 10/06/2005 12:03

I don't have a chip on my shoulder - I was just illistrating that you can't make such sweeping statements such as

"these are hte popel who then moan when they ar in debt"

and

"and the one swho take holidays always moan abot training days and teachers being ill - yet take triqei off att he drop of a hat"

Not everyone is how you think of them!!!
