Steiner education

Can anyone suggest an appropriate forum in which I could talk to someone about Steiner education? We have our concerns about it, but our children are still at a Steiner school.
Thanks

Barking somebody's very cross

It's important to evaluate and to discriminate. How else would we know about the deficits in any particular.. philosophy.

I see what you mean mathanxiety. What on earth's happening in that school in NZ?

restlessnative · 08/12/2009 22:49

Toffeepopple posted before I saw your question. I don't think there would be much difference in Waldorf Steiner schools anywhere in the world. Here's a group of mothers on an expat Italian forum Nothing libelous there btw.

There seems to be more interest (understandably) in Emilio Reggiano schools. These also turn up often as suggested alternatives on US forums.

Toffeepopple · 09/12/2009 13:31

Thanks RN, a family member is currently considering a Steiner school in Italy.

I have forwarded them some material - but they don't really listen to me.... will have a look on that forum.

toffeepopple, I have some body in my family too who knows it all!

thecaty · 09/12/2009 21:20

Restless.
I asked a thiteen year old at our Waldorf school about goal keepers and he said that theirs scored two goals in 15 games. So I can only say: "studdy, studdy what's the score?"

Just found an interesting if somewhat disturbing question from a Steiner Waldorf teacher in the UK.

He would like to know where children should be academically in year 8 as some of his class will be moving into the state system in September.

Surely if Steiner Waldorf schools are confident of receiving state funding next year their teachers should have some grasp of expected academic standards?

What are Steiner Waldorf teachers teaching?

And what world exactly does Steiner Waldorf prepare children for?

thecaty · 09/12/2009 22:39

I was wondering the same about some posters searching the internet desperate for crumbs.
Crumbs is what you got, and does it get any sader than this?

Barking · 09/12/2009 22:44

Crumbs? So what level are the children in your class?

thecaty · 09/12/2009 22:48

Which tree are you barking up know?
I would settle for crumbs after all, if I where u!

Barking · 09/12/2009 22:50

TheCaty, I asked you a question about the academic level of your class, please have the grace to answer

restlessnative · 09/12/2009 23:02

Barking that's hilarious! Did he get an answer?

thecaty · 09/12/2009 23:04

Try again Barking....
Grace lies in the eye of the beholder!

restlessnative · 09/12/2009 23:05

thecaty what do you teach? Just asking.

thecaty · 09/12/2009 23:08

restless, are you scoring owngoals aswell,
this is really hilarious.

thecaty · 09/12/2009 23:19

Sorry Barking. I should have the grace to ask you, what is the question you wanted to ask about a class's level?
Did I miss some thing?
please clarify.

thecaty · 09/12/2009 23:27

Barking, when did you ask this question before?
As you said "asked" We do want to get our questions right don't we, dear!
Maybe TobOfLard wes refering to this kind of observation.
I think it is a question of evaluating then doing the observation so the observation can be ajusted to what you had evaluated in the first place.

alloveragain · 09/12/2009 23:28

In readiness for mainstream school?
We had a psychological and educational assessment done by a professional. His recommendation was the children would be better prepared for secondary education by being transferred during their primary years to a mainstream school. There were obvious shortfalls in their education by being at their Steiner school. This is just our experience, and I share it as a word of warning to all parents looking at Steiner Education. And to be aware that they may not be transparent about their teachings.

Alloveragain, you're assesing this with tinted glasses. My own Ds is way above what his contemporaries are at mainstream school.
and not only academically, so is 70% of his class. Go to a mainstream school if you chose. He actually likes school as well which is always a plus as a parent.
