My DS turned 3 on Sunday and will be going to full time nursery in September. I'm evil though, cos I can't wait

elastamum · 07/04/2005 21:54

Ds2 starts school in september and it will make life a lot easier, although school is a 7 mile drive. At the moment both boys are about 10 miles apart one at nursery parttime and one at school. School run is a logistical nightmare but we didnt have the heart to move one of them as they were both so happy at the preschool and couldnt get the primary place we wanted any nearer to home. Cant wait to get them both in the same place! (might be less stretched...)

Pinotmum · 08/04/2005 08:45

Elstamum, great name!

Pinotmum · 08/04/2005 08:46

Sorry spelling Elastamum, great name

Another one here! DD2 starts at the school nursery next week and then Reception in Sept. The thought of seeing her in school uniform makes me weep! She is very excited and can't wait to go to big school like her brother

Issymum - I'd definitely go for pick up if you have the option, that tends to be when people have the time for a chat.

DD starts reception in September (but is a Spring b'day). Feel a bit of a fraud posting here though as she has started the nursery class at the school this week and has been full-time in a school environment since she was 2.5y, so it'll be no big deal.

Starting the new school this week has been a very big deal though!

binkie · 08/04/2005 10:28

Drop-off vs pick-up: it probably depends on the school. On drop-off, ours lets you bring the children right up to the classroom when they're little, but pick-up is very formal: collectors stand outside the main door and the children emerge one by one, shaking hands with teacher as they leave. So chatting to teachers is better at beginning of day - I love that bit, both of mine have fab teachers, always ready for friendly word. I suppose for mingling w/ other parents, at our school pick-up would be better - but I haven't really had a problem getting to know them, just been a bit more gradual - which actually suits me much better.

Anyway, suggest you find out how your school does beginnings/ends of days. And yes, I agree, dh collecting by wheelchair is brilliant idea. At our school he would have hordes of little boys round him asking Questions - presumably he is happy with that!

Hello everyone, another one here! My dd is 4 next week and is starting school in September. She has Cerebral Palsy and Williams Syndrome so there are additional worries on top of the usual ones, but she is in mainstream nursery now (with full-time support) and seem s to be coping OK so far. She is still seems so young, I wish in a way that she could have another year at nursery, but we'll just have to see how it goes. I'm apprehensive but excited at the same time and can't wait to see her in her little uniform . we found out just before Easter that dd has got into our first (only) choice mainstream school so have just got to get her SEN Statement reviewed and updated so that her level of support can be agreed and then will have to find out whether she goes fulltime from September or is "phased" in.
Looking forward to keeping up with this thread and finding out how everyone copes!

Another one here. Ds1 will start Reception in Sept and be 5 in Sept too. He is at the school nursery now in the afternoon so I am dreading having to be up and out so early in the morning especially as it usually takes him about an hour to eat any breakfast.

I keep thinking he will be starving when he is at school as he eats quite often in the day. I suppose he will learn to eat breakfast quickly after a few weeks. Ds2 will be 3 in Sept and so will probably start at the same school nursery the following Jan.

Me too. DD1 5 in May and starts in August. Out of curiosity do you have an option to hold back in England and Wales with the younger ones? For example the Scottish cut-off is end of Feb and for those born in Jan & Feb it is becoming more and more common to 'hold' back until the following year IYSKIM? Also DD's school has this year decided to just start straight away with full days no faffin about with half days until October. Complete bonus for working parents..

DD is a bit of a jessy thou so I am convinced she will get eaten alive .

Furball · 08/04/2005 11:17

My DS also starts in September and he is 4 in August. They start the older ones first then the younger ones and they all go part-time at first, I think. Won't hear about which school until next week.

Gomez - Yes you can start them a year later, but that means they miss out on the Reception year and go straight in at year 1.

Gomez · 08/04/2005 11:20

Fair enought Furball - we don't do reception here so makes no difference they still just start in Primary 1. They all just sound so young....

SaintGeorge · 08/04/2005 11:27

My DS2 will be 4 in June but doesn't start 'school' until next easter, but that might be because the school has 3 intakes during the year. He currently goes to the nursery unit in the afternoons, not sure yet if he will go full-time at easter or not until Sep 2006. Wish he could go this Sep - he is soooooo ready.

DS1 birthday is Sep 3rd, he was 5yrs 1 week when he started school and still did a year in Reception.

laneydaye · 10/04/2005 17:26

just been in george at asda.... couldnt help myself......very cheap as well (school uniform)
as if you hadnt guessed!

come on own up all you mums and dads who have already bought stuff?

Another one here DS1 was 4 today and starts in September, he only gets half days till next easter but got a feeling he is ready for more. He is partially deaf so we are sorting out things like a radio aid for when he starts, hopefully he will have it next term at pre school to get used to it first. Still hace DD and DS2 at home and am giving up work so a whole new world awaits!

Tessiebear · 10/04/2005 20:06

My DS is starting in Sept and will be 5 in December ... so i feel he is mentally VERY ready for school. I think going every day is going to be a real shock for him though. We recently moved DS1's school and subsequently DS2's nursey , so he now only goes 2 mornings and one afternoon - and he moans like anything about that!!!

bea · 10/04/2005 21:15

i am heartbroken at the thought of my dd going to school... she isn't four until July so she will only have just turned 4...

the thought of us being a slave to school times is unbearable... no more going to the park etc when all the other kiddies are at school so you practically have the whole thing to yourself...

also she is absolutley tiny and i am already getting myself wound up about it... i fear there will be more than a few tears when she goes...(all mine!!!!)

singersgirl · 11/04/2005 08:35

Another one here! DS2 will be 4 on August 31st and will start school part-time in September. I have been quite weepy about this over the last couple of weeks - I really looked forward to DS1, now in Y2, starting school, but I'm sad to see my baby go...DH says it's time to work on conceiving a DD (or of course a DS3.....). DS2 is quite happy about the idea of school at the moment because his big brother already goes.
Our LEA (Richmond upon Thames) doesn't send out confirmation of school places until something like 22nd April - anyone else not heard yet?

Azure · 18/04/2005 16:07

DS also starts in September and is another end-of-August birthday. He started the pre-school attached to the school in February, which means he already knows some of the children and the teachers (e.g. his music teacher is from main school), and goes to the main school for certain activities, e.g. computers. Hopefully it won't be a shock come September, although I'm sure the first sight of him in a uniform will have me in tears. I've also taken Pamina's drastic solution to the school gate dilemma and am expecting #2 at the end of August (2 days before DS is 4), so hope to get a good few months in of meeting the other parents before a nanny takes over.

Furball · 20/04/2005 12:47

We found out which school, last Friday. Thankfully it was the one we wanted. phew!

Panima3 - was talking about this today with a friend. I said I'd get 3 school jumpers. Then there won't be such a mad panic if I haven't washed any. I suppose I'll get the basics in July/August - I think the uniform itself has to be ordered via the school, so I assume they'll let us know when they want us to sort it. Suppose we all better start saving up now, it's goning to cost a bomb!
