clary we have the waist thing so buy the little grey pinafore dresses from M and S (the simple a-line ones) instead.

Nixz · 25/08/2005 10:51

i bought the m & s aline pinifores, in grey with some pleats at the front - its lovely!

clary · 25/08/2005 16:55

thanks for that ladies.
I have got a pinafore already and agree it's very sweet, but was advised a skirt was easier for PE....
marialuisa, didn't know you were in derby (durrr). Was in Batties only the other day but failed to check out the skirts. will have to go back and have another look. Where is Morleys???
spent last evening ironing in nametapes to ds1 and dd's uniform. Done gym kit but not pants or socks....

LIZS · 25/08/2005 17:03

Navy long socks and velcro plimsolls from Woolies !

LIZS · 26/08/2005 12:38

hi issyymum just read your post its very good,i will take note ,my ds starts 12th september.

singersgirl · 31/08/2005 20:03

Issymum, will take your advice - all v. sensible in the light of DS1's experiences. DS2 is 4 today, so just sneaks into this school year - doesn't start till 19th, though, and they all only do mornings until January, so shouldn't be too much of a shock after nursery.

figleaf · 31/08/2005 21:01

My second son starts on the 9th then has no school till the 26th (as hes one of the youngest and they phase them in). Im worried that everyone else will have made friends and know everything and my little tot wont . On the plus side it does give me some time with him to do fun stuff. I can also focus on my oldest for a while as he starts juniors tomorrow.

Oh! how Ill cry once theyve both gone!!

nooka · 31/08/2005 21:32

figleaf, I wouldn't worry - ds was a later starter when he went (can't believe he's going in to yr2 now) and it didn't seem to affect him settling in and making friends. I much prefer the staggered start, all the short days and change makes life very complicated, and I'm not sure that it helps the children settle either. I'm curious though - my dd is starting next week, but she will actually turn 5 the day before she starts. Our school does a January entry for the littler ones - I thought that was standard?

pesha · 31/08/2005 22:41

Clary if you've not got a skirt yet i got my dd a grey skirt from tescos for £3.50 that has an adjustable waist cos she is impossibly slim, no hips at all! Its also teflon coated and all that too.

She starts school next tuesday and is really excited about it, keeps trying on her uniform to show people. Its me thats not looking forward to it, well part of me is excited cos its a whole new stage so to speak, part of me is relieved at getting a break but part of me doesnt want to see my baby all grown up

She's 5 in november though and is really more than ready for school, i think she needs the extra stimulation and challenge she seems to love learning new things and then telling everyone what she knows and thinking she's so much cleverer than the rest of us

LIZS · 01/09/2005 14:41

ok got most of the uniform now - dd's tunic will either be a bit short or impossibly long though ! Might even have to buy one new No blazers 2nd hand in her size so am going to see how long we can do without. Now to label ...

clary · 02/09/2005 00:16

oooh pesha, haven't looked in tesco (looked everywhere else it seems like).
Had major nightmare with dd's school cardie but it's all sorted now so will not bore you all...
nooka, in answer to yr question, lots of LEAs are moving to 1-point entry. My ds1 (6 in the summer) started in January but that was the lsat yr we had 2-point entry here.
Now ever the August b/days start in sept when they are 4 and a few days
A colleague just had a baby boy a few days early - at 3.30 this am (phew)

webmum · 13/09/2005 10:46

so has anyone started yet? DD1 started last wed. She looked so small in her uniform!

She's been crying every single morning, but stopped as soon as I was out of sight, she even tells me what she's had for lunch (except the first day!), and I know she's been playing with a couple of girls...so it looks ok, apart from the crying routine...she used to do it at nursery too. She just seems unable to say goodbye to me (and she's not a clingy child, she's perfectly ok if I leave her with someone she knows very well), any tips on that???

Hope your first days were not too traumatic, at our school there were just as many mums crying as girls.

Azure · 13/09/2005 11:23

DS1 started last week. He wore his winter uniform on the first day (blazer, cap, tie etc) and what a cutie he looked. I managed not to cry, unexpectedly. He has been wearing the summer uniform since then (polo shirt and shorts). I went to a curriculum meeting last night where the year ahead was discussed and we heard from his teachers. He seems to be enjoying it so far, which is great. His teacher is going to assess his reading in the next few days (erm, non-existent) and come up with his reading program. I also submitted a registration form for DS2 yesterday - he is 3 weeks old!

Azure · 13/09/2005 11:26

Webmum, sorry to hear your DD1 has been crying - that must make it more difficult. At least it sounds like she is fine once you have gone. We have been told not to take the children into the classroom any more but say goodbye inside the gate - the teachers think that will help with the children who get upset. No tips, only sympathy, I'm afraid.

LIZS · 13/09/2005 11:51

dd started last Thursday and today was the worst for leaving her. She was howling and was taken off me by the assistant . Not sure if she is tired, upset or what. She says she cries for me during the day too but noone has said that to me. We have to wait around both before and after school for ds so we have little chats then but think it also makes the anticipation harder for her.

It is going to be a long week, I fear.

Oh, and finally got her a blazer in BHS 20% off ,turned the sleeves up even though as it is 3-4 , and purloined a badge from the School Shop for free !

Maddison · 13/09/2005 17:46

DS1 started last Monday on afternoons, tbh he was okay and so was I, no tears from any of the kids or parents. This week he is there on a morning which seems to be a little harder (he was an afternoon nursery kid) and today at 10:30 I got a call from the school to go and pick him up because he had been sick!!

Next week he starts going full time so there may be tears then, DS1 may get a little upset too ....

Kaz33 · 13/09/2005 20:07

DS1 started last thursday, the only words I can use to describe him is inspired and erratic. He has told me that his teacher is beautiful, he gets home from school and then has to draw before crashing out on the sofa.

Having problems with his behaviour at the moment but don't think that is related to school, just trying the boundaries.

mumbee · 14/09/2005 13:23

Ds & Dd started new school successful on 12 september. bad day for me husband rescue loads of pizza!!

The tips for handling them after school was great, and has worked really well especially for Ds who has just started reception.

Thanks for all the advice on this thread mums this week has been a lot easier because of it

webmum · 19/09/2005 10:19

thanks for the messages of sympathy, dd1 is now getting along well, I still hae to take her into her classroom, but once there she hugs me and waves bye bye, she absolutely loves school, being with girls her age and learning all sorts of things!

webmum · 19/09/2005 10:21

Of course promising a surprise if she didn't cry di help enormously!!!!

figleaf · 20/09/2005 12:11

Still waiting to start although we have had some nice trips to the zoo, swimming and museums etc.

nooka - Im in Bristol so we all start as rising 5s. I could keep DS off until he is 5 in April but they have no other start dates except for the 3 in September. I think the option of starting in Jan would be nice but I dont think Id have taken it.

Furball · 29/09/2005 08:26

Well, finally, he started yesterday. Only afternoons for the first week and only a group of 5, so all very calm. He was very excited yesterday (as was I) and kept asking all morning if it was time to put on his uniform. He went into the classroom no probs and got on with some puzzles that were on the table. Hometime soon came and he was full of beans and couldn't wait to tell me all about it. so fingers crossed.
