Private tutoring in the evenings? Adult education classes in the evenings? Making cakes and selling them to other teachers at break time?!! Exam marking is a lot of work for not that much money methinks.

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 11/11/2008 22:49

I have no idea what I'm talking about but

how about setting exams?
can you work for one of the unions?
do ofsted involve teachers for advice?

twinsetandpearls · 11/11/2008 22:51

I don't even know how much exam marking pays.

I do have to be careful with my workload as I am doing a degree part time but what we have coming in is not enough.

Am I allowed to teach in the evenings? Not sure if I would be breaking my contract? What about OU teaching?

I did marking - not much of a money spinner IMO. Tutoring seems a bit more lucrative - especially if you are Maths, English, Science etc

A colleague of mine worked in M&S on Saturdays

bookthief · 11/11/2008 22:52

My friend is an English teacher and makes extra money tutoring. My sil does the same (primary teacher).

twinsetandpearls · 11/11/2008 22:52

I am RE and philosphy not much call for tutoring

thumbwitch · 11/11/2008 22:53

you are allowed to do private tuition in the evenings - why not? I have a friend who is a maths teacher who does maths tuition in the evenings, going rate seems to be about £25 per hour (I think)

Tommy · 11/11/2008 22:53

a Mum at school does OU tutoring - I could ask her what it's like

ceciliaaherne · 11/11/2008 22:53

I have taught night school at local college. Taught my HT's friend so defo no problem re. contract. Am in Scotland

IdrisTheDragon · 11/11/2008 22:53

My geography teacher at school used to be a taxi driver in the evenings. Have no idea how he managed that really.

Tommy · 11/11/2008 22:53

lol twinset - same as me. Not many people want extra tuition do they?!

janeite · 11/11/2008 22:54

I know teachers that have done evening classes too, so assume it's okay but really don't know.

Did you get your threshold application in? Would that be a big enough salary boost without having to do extra work?

thumbwitch · 11/11/2008 22:54

what about adult ed classes for philosophy? probably doesn't pay much either.

high class escort? you have the pearls...

SueW · 11/11/2008 22:54

OU tutoring

twinsetandpearls · 11/11/2008 22:55

How do I get into producing educational resources?

Have often thought what I produce is better than those to buy?

Are my resources owned by the school or by me?

ceciliaaherne · 11/11/2008 22:55

Are you looking to earn a lot/little more? What about Avon?

pinkteddy · 11/11/2008 22:55

don't know whether this is your thing and won't pay as much as teaching but councils are always looking for play workers for holiday playschemes etc. Alternatively your council may have an adult and family learning service - they are usually looking for teachers and that would pay better - usually about £20 per hour.

twinsetandpearls · 11/11/2008 22:55

When I worked in London I knew of quite a few teachers who were strippers, escorts etc. Not much hope for me I am afraid.

I have just started a blog on this- well on earning extra:
penniesintopounds.blogspot.com/ I really do recommend the 'a bit on a side' book that I've mentioned on there.

I used to do tutoring. Will write about it tomorrow. It can be quite lucrative and I always enjoyed it.

twinsetandpearls · 11/11/2008 22:56

I want to earn whatever I can! A few hundred a month would make a big difference, not sure if I could do that though.

oh forgot to link here

thumbwitch · 11/11/2008 22:57

do the students at the school pay for their education? if so then the school might be said to own stuff that you produce for them as it would constitute part of the package they are selling to their consumers.

If not, then you probably own it yourself (intellectual property rights or something)

ceciliaaherne · 11/11/2008 22:57

Re. resources, if your school commissioned them(development plan), don't think you could sell them.
