Marking doesn't pay hugely, I mark GCSE RE (unit A and H) for Edexcel in the summer, and this year I got £1610.20 net for six weeks work, and it is tough, as it is online and buggers your eyes up. I will do it again next year as the money is funding my MA.

Have you looked into pre GCSE and A level cramming? I know that there are organisations that take over a private school and do pre exam work to revise and teach exam technique, or I think there is a place called the National Extension College who do A levels by distance learning. It may be worth contacting them to see if they need tutors, especially as they offer A level Religious Studies.

You could see if there is any marking going for January, I think Edexcel were looking for AS level markers for the Jan modules, or have a look at the exam board whose specification you teach.

If you teach at a private school, do they need extra help on a Sat/Sun if it's boarding? You could pick some housemistressing up as an extra perhaps?

Making Good Progress scheme going live in Sept 2009. KS2 and KS3, 10 sessions of tutoring after school delivered by qualified teachers.
I'm taking part in the pilot now (going on in 10 LEA's) £25...they will be desperate for tutors!

twinsetandpearls · 13/11/2008 22:58

lol at me being mini xenia.

I have a way to go before buying my won island.

£1600 would make a huge difference to me so although it is a lot of work I will look into exam marking. It would also be good experience.

Will also look into exam cramming and the making good pregress scheme as well.

Babysitting for Sitters. Our sitter gets paid about £6 per hour but she just studies whilst at our house and says she is out 'sitting' nearly every night if she wants the work. Because she is a teaching assistant and has a CRB, List 99 etc she was taken on quickly by Sitters and is in great demand. Any help?

twinsetandpearls · 15/11/2008 23:03

I could do sitting will ask dp.

It may also cure me of my broodiness as I need to accept we are too poor to have another child.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 15/11/2008 23:06

I don;t drive so can;t be a sitter.

OP posts:
Toffeetart · 15/11/2008 23:13

Ok, but it may be worth setting up your own evening babysitting 'agency'. You could advertise yourself as a sitter in libraries, newsagents, local nurseries etc and see if you get any business that way ie areas that you can walk to. People often prefer to use local sitters anyway.

Toffeetart · 15/11/2008 23:15

peopleperhour.com any use to you?

twinsetandpearls · 16/11/2008 00:21

dp does not want me going into strange houses, says it is dangerous.

twinsetandpearls · 16/11/2008 00:23

Is that the company owned by the man who was on the prog about people who are profiting from the recession by coming up with things that help people through? In his case, allowing small businesses to hire as required as opposed to taking on new employees?

twinsetandpearls · 16/11/2008 00:50

For some reason it will not let me register with people per hour

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 16/11/2008 00:51

It sounds like it might be SueW do you know something awful about them.

Not at all. V positive.

(I felt they were less positive about the entrepreneur who was buying people's houses and renting them back to them.)

I have just started tutoring as well as teaching part time. Am English degree holder plus Social Policy and Politics MA so am teaching English in schools (currently intervention programmes) and tutoring sociology A2, Politics A2 and GCSE English plus KS2 booster Literacy and numeracy. I earn more with tuition than teaching! I love doing both though. I have also applied to mark GCSE and A levels. I am thinking of selling sen materials as this is kind of my specialty now. schools seem to struggle (imo).

I used to own findasitter but have sold it in the summer as I simply could not spend enough money on it to make it viable. Absolute wrench but money paid off my student debts (from retraining to teach). But you can register to babysit as SEN sitter with new company - just google findasitter. I make no more money from the site..
also I recommend Cool2Care as a way of getting a bit of extra income. It is mainly caring for disabled kids and young people. Very rewarding and extra money - I do the training in my local area, esp around special needs.

Common Entrance (13+) RE incorporates a lot of philosophy, which can be a big step for a lot of children. Where are you based? There must be a few tutoring agencies that will be happy to sign you up to help the children sitting CE exams next June. Good luck. Hope you find something.

wordfactory · 17/11/2011 16:21

How about crammer courses for GCSE and A level?
Also, residentiual retake courses?

Babysitting? Agencies charge about nine quid an hour (six to the sitter, three for them) so you could charge eight and undercut them. Pretty easy work- they sleep, you do your marking.

Dog sitting. Lots of folk no longer use kennels and would much rather their dog stay in a real home whilst they are away. If DP is at home this is reasonable cash.

Also, think laterally. What else are you good at? Don't just assume it has to be teaching.

Bonsoir · 17/11/2011 17:16

There is a massive, growing market for extra tuition, as this report which I keep linking to, shows. What of the many sorts of shadow education outlined in the report could you make money doing?

Bonsoir · 17/11/2011 17:17

Have just seen this is a really old thread!

scaryteacher · 18/11/2011 14:10

Edexcel looking for a new Principal examiner for IGCSE RE.

Examining OK - I am a team leader for Edexcel GCSE RE, and it isn't bad money for the workload.

You mark online which means you can sort your working time to suit you; I don't each at the moment so I do some invigilation during the day in exam season and fit the marking around that.

fivegomadindorset · 18/11/2011 14:15

I think you need to be looking into exploiting your culinary skills, alternatively your DD is still small enough to send up chimneys. (serious about the first one by the way)
