Why do primary schools have such horrid uniforms ??

When I was at primary school, there was a quite strict uniform of a white blows (not a PE top) a navy skirt and a navy v-necked jumper with a school tie. This was very smart and reasonably cheep, as you pay loads for those sweat shirts with the logo on and they just look slouchy. Somthing you'd ware for lazing around the house in.
When my daughter starts school, she'll wear a lovely white crisp blowse and a nice pinnafore, but it will unfortunatly be ruined by a chunky sweat shirt over the top. I don't think they are any more practicle than a cheeper wool jumper that looks smart.
People always complain about the cost of uniforms but I wouldn't mind paying for the jumper if it looked smart.

DS's uniform is quite nice I think. Navy blue and jade green sweatshirts/polo shirts and navy trousers. I think sweatshirts look smarter than wool jumpers personally and they're easier to wash and dry.

Maybe they look better on boys. I don't know, I've always dressed my dd really femininly and smart and just think that she'll be dressing down for school.

That sounds nice nailpolish, I'd be happy with that. I think a tie is nice, makes them feel smart and grown-up.

are the polo shirts and sweatshirts compulsory?
uniforms shouldnt be compulsory in state schools
buy her a shirt and wool cardi if you want

At ours you can buy the equivalent non-logo'd uniform. So you could buy your DD a nice, plain cardigan in the school colour to go over her pinafore. I do put my DS in the school sweatshirts because they look better than the cheapo ones from Asda that fade and go baggy. But I have bought my DD a couple of nice red cardigans from Adams.

Thanks, yes a nice cardi in the school colour would look better. She could have the sweatshirt too and use it for PE.

DC's schools do logo'd cardies in sweatshirt material not many buy them because they are more expensive than the sweatshirts. Nailpolish is right the uniforms at state schools aren't comulsory until secondary no matter what the school implies.

That sounds nice. They don't do them at dd's future school though.
Maybe I should re think the school. (That is of corse a joke)

Goodness, prehaps nice crisp white blouses with a tie look lovely, but they are hardly practical. Imagine reception PE time it would just be an exercise in dressing and undressing rather than any actual exercise.

Polo shirts are practical and cheap. They don't require ironing and the child can get them on and off easily without help. Sweatshirt material have the advantage that they dry quicker than traditional cardigans.

Even if school uniform is not complusory at primary school you might find that peer pressure has the same affect. Your cute little girl may turn round and ask to wear trousers and a sweatshirt like all her mates.

Well I suppose they are a BIT more practical, I'd still go for the nicer looking option though.
A lot of parents say they "can't afford" the propper uniform but still buy £50 trainers for their children, and they have all the labelled sports gear. They also smoke and drink etc. ( I'm thinking of certain people I know off)
That dosn't go for everyone.

After 10 years (last 11th year this year) at primary, I'd go for practical over pretty every time.

because in the days when children wore 'pretty', fiddly uniforms, the very youngest child in the school was five. It was also standard to do pe in vest and pants/knickers

Whereas because of when the start of term fell this year, there was a 3 year old in the reception class. And PE in vest and knickers is Frowned Upon.

As long as it is cheap, hard wearing and washes well I don't mind.

Because children need to wear practical, comfortable hard wearing clothes that everyone can afford. Some people have lives that do not have space for ironing.

actualy coem to think of it id like to know why all children seem to wear velcro shoes these days and sweatshirts and t shirts
why not just teach them to do up buttons and laces??

I used to have a blowse that was a gerorous fit and just undo the top two buttons and slip it over my head, I was acctually 3 when I started school and wore a blowse, pinnafore, tie and blazer. Mind you, there were only 8 children in my class with two teachers. That makes a difference.
I look back at the pics and they did look gorgeous, really traditional.
I can't remember doing PE in my vest and knickers though. Perhaps I did.

dds uniform is horrid, yellow polo top and bottle green jumper, I went to the same school as a child and it was yellow blouse, bottle green and yellow tie and green skirts.

The school I would prefer my dd to go to has a lovely uniform, grey pinafore, royal blue and silver tie and a royal blue cardigan, its sooo smart :0)

because four year olds can't do up laces in most cases, and they then trip over and injure themselves.

And what on earth is so important about laces anyway? I barely own a pair of footwear with laces on. they are pointless and outmoded.

Oh seeker, ties look sweet on little ones. I can't see why anyone wouldn't like them.
One of our primarys has a tie with the uniform but it's on elastic.
