We are nearing our 1000-post limit on the original thread:

I have now removed the question mark after "plagiarist".

I can't believe the sequel will be as good as the original, but you never know...

Why isnt he allowed to be considered vulnerable?

He might be vulnerable. But that wasn't why he called the police. He called the police because the guy wasn't going to let him continue getting away with lying.

He never called the police the day he claimed a masked knifeman threatened him though!

Why isnt he allowed to be considered vulnerable?

We don’t know if he is or isn’t, but I honestly don’t think that’s why he called the police. It’s obvious he did it to silence people. You don’t call in Carter Ruck otherwise!

I’m a black woman and I honestly don’t think this is about him being black at all (although you’re always going to get a few racists who will use it as a stick to beat us all with) I think if he’d just been a plagiarist and lied on his CV it would be getting much less attention, it’s his whole Walter Mitty backstory that has made it the big media sensation that it is.

Yes, he thanks her and references a child in the acknowledgements of his PhD. See, some of us actually made an effort to read the thing… or some of it at least.

Edited

His wife got him on the surprise tv show thing where he got the trip to USA and the opportunity to meet Andy Murray.

I'm sure I read yesterday (although can't find the source now) that not only does he claim to have been non-verbal until age 11, but that he also did not even understand language before this time. This seems to be the most extreme version possible.

The stages he describes, and his ability at each stage as he increasingly engaged in higher education, is completely implausible. Another anecdote he shared was that he had the reading age of his three year old whilst studying his undergrad. I mean, for one thing no three year old has a reading age!

Why is he a fake? He's lied on his cv yes, most people do.

Were his exam scores falsified? Were his credentials to get the specific job falsified, I am not sure if they were?

He faked or stole the interview evidence for his research. He also has absolutely nothing to say in his field which has not been said before (and said better). He was not capable of doing his job, and he must have known it.

AnonyMumAuDHD · Today 22:12

rockingaroundthe · Today 22:01

Why isnt he allowed to be considered vulnerable?

At the risk of calling a fellow autistic/ND person ableist… being autistic does not automatically make you vulnerable. It’s the specifics of an individual’s presentation and co-morbid diagnoses that MAY render an autistic person more vulnerable than others.

My DD is beyond fragile and vulnerable and will need support and oversight for probably her whole life. I, my DS, and several other family members, despite the high propensity for fucking up and getting ourselves into serious pickles, will live perfectly functional lives and have perfectly functional relationships. I’d say that until this week Arday was in that latter cohort along side us, really.

So she must have known everything he said was bullshit too?! I’d love to know what she thinks about it all.

Given his apparent Global development delay and his autism which were diagnosed when he was 3 I think, I was surprised when I discovered that one of his earliest memories was of Nelson Mandela being freed, given he was not even 5 when it happened.

Interesting that they actively did not include a single white face in their brochure, implying that DEI credentials were paramount. They included 3 photos, ONE of them could have been a white woman in a wheelchair… just for racial balance.

I didn't notice that. I was more interested in how the post arose - it says to replace the incumbent who was retiring. She's still listed as "a Professor of Sociology in Education ", but is obviously retirement type age.

I thought she'd already gone and so it was an empty position.

Two brothers I think, plus the college lecturer who basically treated him like his own child and spent hours every day teaching him to read and write.

I don’t believe that any teacher is willing or able to give seven spare hours A DAY to teach one young person, however exceptional they might think the child is. that’s taking on a whole other full time job.

But this is how Jason Arday claims that he was taught daily after class by this teacher/ mentor guy.

Class ended at 2pm then he says, then Jason would be held back for this teaching for seven hours a day, he tells the host in that BBC World Sevice interview upthread. The way JA keeps referring so implausibly to how special and exceptional other people thinks he is, does make him seem vulnerable in some way.
red flag. His mum sounds lovely and supportive and his dad which is great but to find other saintlike people beyond his immediate family who are ready to basically dedicate their lives to him, just doesn’t sound like plausible human nature.

@cantabsupervisor The Times is reporting that Sonita Alleyne has removed her name from the Grift Law Project letter of support for Arday.

For those that don’t know her she’s the non-academic “right on” Master of Arday’s now ex college, Jesus College, and is well known for using her platform to campaign for social justice, academic standards: not so much. Jesus College used to be a proper college until she took over.

I’ve just looked at her Wikipedia. Born in 1968 and graduated from Cambridge in 1988. Is that even possible?

Erm, am being a very very naughty student? My doc got corrupted earlier and I had to do some major reconstruction work and make a new one. There may have been tears and swears. And some intermittent sulking.

I still have 4.5 chapters to do, but I have 72,500 words of a novel that was meant to be, erm, 70000 words. Think it will end up around the 85k mark. But that’s what the editing process is for, isn’t it?

Skulks off to open her proper laptop and look very serious and writerly…

That you could be different and be successful in an area that has been historically viewed as only being accessible to a privileged elite

I assume you didn't study there? The diversity focus in modern times was such that it wasn't as academically elite (as you would imagine). Those with non privileged backgrounds were accepted with lower grades and the more protected characteristics the better. Although I assumed they would have had maintained higher standards for professors..clearly not. The next wave of publicity will be legal challenges from students who were "taught" by Arday.

A few years ago I could forsee some scandals due to Cambridge entrance practices however I didn't think it would impact teaching positions. I wonder if there are more cases??

I reckon it's just another tall tale. But the other half of this particular bit of back story must be completely in cahoots with him as he gets a name check repeatedly.

I am gobsmacked that a University such as Cambridge could have such lax appointment procedures that someone with Arday's credentials could get anywhere near a professorial chair!

A few years ago I served on the governing board of a university department within the Social Science Faculty, at a European University which was a lot like Cambridge. During my time, I was involved in the appointment of a few professors and the appointments followed a very strict process that could take up to a couple of years to get a person in place.

Step 1: a professor within the department was appointed to manage the process and the role was advertised.

Step 2: the initial paper sift to remove applicants that didn't meet minimum requirements for the post. We had some fantasists as well - I especially remember a retired high school Social Studies teacher who used to apply for every senior lecturer/professor post on the basis of his B.Ed. from the 1970s (no masters, no PhD, no research).

Step 3: (this is the step that took time) an academic expert panel was convened (the professor plus subject expert professors from other Universities) to assess academic ability from the research publication history submitted for consideration. Weighting is given the the quality of publication - so higher weight is given to articles in top academic publications, then other journals/publishers and non-academic publication the lowest. Candidates would be expected to have made some theoretical/methodological contribution to the discipline. So a genuine peer review of the candidates' research quality and originality by experts in the field. The panel ranks the candidates according to academic merit.

Step 4: the top 3-6 candidates are invited to the next "in person" stage. There are interviews with representatives from department/experts/faculty. Then, because teaching ability is also required, the 3-6 candidates also have to give short sample lectures plus a Q&A.

Step 5: it is first now - step 5 - that any DEI characteristics are considered and a final ranking is produced. DEI was usually used only if it is close between candidates (and the one time it was applied it was a total shitshow). Finally position/s are offered.

The sorry mess at Cambridge shows the failure of the social media approach to recruitment. The department wanted someone who "looked" good on the website and ticked the right boxes without having a rigorous process to ensure that the recommended applicant had the right abilities. Obviously Arday must take responsibility for his own lies and fakery.

The real victims in this are

  • the academics he plagiarised - their research was stolen by Arday by a University that promoted style over substance because they didn't "look right"
  • the minority/disabled academics who will now find themselves under even more intense microscopes
  • the students who have been defrauded out of £30,000 in tuition fees for a substandard education. Sadly many of these students will be black/disabled who chose to study there precisely because they believed the hype that Jason Arday was an academic superstar ... yet ended up with a "professor" who sat on the desk and talked about himself rather than teaching the course content.

At this point I think I'd be e-mailing myself a new version of the file every time I had a tea break!

You'll get there. Just keep going. Think how great it will be to get to the print it all off and sit down with a cup of tea and a stack of red pens stage!
