We are nearing our 1000-post limit on the original thread:

I have now removed the question mark after "plagiarist".

I can't believe the sequel will be as good as the original, but you never know...

Jason Arday, Cambridge Plagiarist? | Mumsnet

I’m surprised to be the first to mention this, but what do people think about Jason Arday, the Cambridge professor accused of plagiarism, and the medi...

@prh47bridge sometimes the loudest truth comes without references. That man is just so authentic. I've watched and rewatched the clip so many times - I feel like I could have been in the back of that minibus while they were singing!

I dont think i am wrong here.

As I understand it, he said he was 'non verbal' as a student. He may have had some words but until you can communicate properly using words, youre classed as non verbal, is my understanding as an autism mum

Has that been disproved?

I have held him in my heart as an inspiration for my own child, which is why i do think that, as an autistic person, he took 'exaggerate on your c'est too literally.

A guy who claims to have been a friend of Arday's at Primary school and through church activities did a tiktok that denied that he had any speech problems at primary school and called Arday a "chatty patty"

I accept that some people used Black Lives Matter in 2020 to advance their careers. Ive seen créatives talk about 'those opportunities dying out'. As someone who was genuinely hurt by the killings of black Americans, I felt frustrated by this.

But i dont think that all the hires from this time were undeserving

Ultimately, it is illegal in the UK to positively discriminate - so the institutions that did so made a shocking job of it, bodging even the principles of that idea. I think it would be very easy to prove laws have been breached by looking back at the applicants for JA’s professorship and simply using metrics to establish whether there is any objective evidence for him being among the most excellent of candidates. There are also some prime examples of similar massively under qualified hires of black leadership roles in arts institutions. This isn’t to say black people are unappointable in senior jobs across a range of sectors - but when the impulse is ‘we need a black face or it makes us look bad’, the proper processes aren’t followed and the wrong person is invariably appointed. At JA’s level of publication, prestige and experience he would struggle to get a Senior Lecturer promotion at most of the places where I have worked…let alone a Chair at Cambridge!

Why is he a fake? He's lied on his cv yes, most people do.

Were his exam scores falsified? Were his credentials to get the specific job falsified, I am not sure if they were?

Most people don't. I never have. Most people don't lift over 180 passages from someone else's thesis, then say that it was 'their ASD' causting them to learn by mimicry.

Most people don't claim to have a qualification from a university that a) doesn't offer that qualification and b) says they weren't a student there.

Most people don't claim to have held roles they didn't hold.

Most people don't say that there were 3000 people waiting for them at the finishing line of a marathon when there were in fact about 50.

So far I don't think there is anything concrete, other than a guy who claims to know him from childhood and that he was a "chatty patty" at a young age.

I hope the autism is a true diagnosis, and it's only the dubiousness of the timeline of when speech, reading and writing abilities were acquired.

Unfortunately it's looking highly likely that's it's another thing that whilst it may have an origin in truth has been well and truly over egged.

As for your hope that it's all just a case of him taking 'over inflate your CV' literally to a massive degree, that doesn't track if his family is as tight and close knit, full of mental health specialists, and therefore presumably protective of Jason as he professes.

Surely family would have stepped in and explained to him that his level of exaggeration was over the top and he needed to be more truthful about his previous history and his job experience

He's so far been found to have lied about some qualifications and some of his job roles.

No-one lies on their CV in the industries I have worked in - when found out, even if it was just a grade in their GCSE maths, they have been immediately dismissed and escorted out of the building by security. In my industry, in my DH’s industry telling even just a small lie risks being kicked out of your professional associations or at the very least censured by them. It can mean you never work in your field again - something I have seen. People fired and they drop off the face of the earth. No social media, no Linked in, everything gone. People I had worked with for years went this way.

Giles Coren is a dick - and I am not sure that that article wasn’t meant to be entirely tongue-in-cheek anyway. But most people are very very carefully vetted and their Cv’s checked so no, they don’t usually even ‘embellish’ their cv’s, especially when the age of tech means it is so easy to corroborate. And the more outlandish the claim, the easier that is to do.

After all, we can easily check if someone was a torch-bearer for the Olympics as there are records on line. So is everything else, essentially.

Speak for yourself about lies on CVs.
And there is a difference between 'well, it's a matter of opinion' (how experienced is 'very experienced', for example?) and outright lies.

And there is clear evidence of plagiarism in his PhD. That alone should have seen him firmly booted out. Plagiarism is a form of theft, in two ways. Firstly, it's a direct theft from the person (or people) whose work you are passing off as your own, and it's an indirect form of theft from all the people (like me) who work their arses off for their PhDs and who do, in fact, make an original contribution to the knowledge (which is what a PhD is supposed to be): it demeans our efforts and makes a PhD a lesser thing.

IMHO it's a despicable thing to do. So yes, Jason Arday can do one.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 21:53

@Fraudornot With Daniel Tannet it is more complex - he can do all the things he says he can, unlike JA, but the method is in question. He is accused of having an excellent memory and using mnemonics rather than due to innate savant syndrome.

He didn't stand for hope and change.

Barack Obama for example stood for hope and change. Campaigned and was voted for. Not perfect. Not ideal. Not accepted by everyone but put in the work.

Jason Arday stood for lies, narcissism and a DEI system which has fucked over black and ND people.

Thomas Sowell for example should stand for hope and change but as a Black academic from deprivation who complained about DEI and the consequences of it, including when he was a lecturer in top US University is dismissed by many as a race traitor.

He is an example of Black excellence in academia before it was trendy and has the receipts of how DEI in University's was failing Black students decades ago and everything he predicted has come true in Jason Arday.

With the added 21st century obsession with ND that he couldn't have predicted and how reasonable adjustments have not been at all reasonable and fear of being discriminatory means a number of people are receiving degrees and then further accolades that they don't deserve because they can barely string an essay together.

Stellar post, ThisNewZebra - and yes there's a man to admire in Thomas Sowell (I can't believe he's 96 now!!)

I just think hes told a lot of lies, which is his way of existing

Calling the police on someone because he felt threatened, this man is vulnerable!

So he happened to fail upwards! Were he a white man (and yes, i am going there) he's be classed as one of the lads whos made a mistake, not held in front of the public for a beating

First one is very fitting for this thread subject

Some things are believed because they are demonstrably true. But many other things are believed simply because they have been asserted repeatedly—and repetition has been accepted as a substitute for evidence.”

Yes, he thanks her and references a child in the acknowledgements of his PhD. See, some of us actually made an effort to read the thing… or some of it at least.
