No turning upside down in the playground if you are wearing a dress unless you put your PE shorts on underneath

My primary school has created a new rule that girls may not be upside down in the playground as their knickers will be on display. It is OK if they wear trousers or put on shorts under their skirts/ dresses.

I am v unhappy about the message this gives out to the girls & it reminds me of the Victorians covering up piano legs...

What should I do?

Compulsory shorts over pants seems prudish and oppressive to me.

Interestingly this turned out to be the rule of a playground supervisor worried that paedophiles would watch/photograph the children from nearby flats - and not a school rule at all. We have gone back to showing pants again now (sigh of relief).

I have absolutly no fear of paedophiles. I don't think they are lurking around every corner. Yes they exist but the media seem to have blown the issue up out of all proportion.

My contention is that the message that we are giving girls is that there is something wrong with being a girl. In order to be successful You have to hide the fact that you are a girl and this starts from their first day at school when they are put in shorts rather than a skirt.

How do you feel if someone sees your knickers?

I'm rather older than 8 but if I'm upside down in the playground and someone sees my knickers I think we will both have a good giggle while I regain my equilibrium.
