Is it bad to use Ai for study purposes?

Hi, is it really that bad to use ai (I use Gemini) for study purposes? I use it to understand a topic, to summarise text I am trying to understand and learn, sometimes to explain the topic I am studying or convert the text it into simpler sentences. I know Ai is bad and I want to stop using it but I just keep coming back to the ai because it helps me sometimes and it is saving me a lot of time. Please can you make me understand why should I or shouldn't use ai for study purposes? Thank you

Because I missed your post.

I am not saying that AI should not be used or that it can not be a useful aid to work/learning etc. It can be, if used appropriately. I use it in some of the ways you are suggesting. I also get my students to use it in ways that encourage, rather than discourage, critical analysis and thinking. However, the vast majority of students who claim to be using to help learning are simply using it to replace learning. That is what I have a problem with.

Now I’m really out😁

or you make a wrong turn and are back

Depends what you are studying at what level. If you’re a university student and you can’t make sense of the resources you are required to use, you probably aren’t intellectually equipped to study that subject at that level.

Recently I asked chat gpt about a book I was reading and linked it with a singer the way you would in google eg black beauty book David Bowie singer (they were both different I just can’t remember at the moment!) because I wanted to see if that book was mentioned in one of their songs or if there was some link. Chatgpt told me (based on example) that David Bowie had written a black beauty book and sometimes sang about it. My mind was blown.

You can only use ai if you have a very good base knowledge of the subject matter otherwise you won’t know what’s real and what’s not in the same way in college you’re taught how to know whether various papers are referencable or not. It does amazing stuff for people but I don’t think you should use it as an unquestionable baseline for information you need.
