Play date with mum who agrees with education tax

Please let me know if I’m overreacting. I recently overheard a new mum at school talking about a local private school closing down due to the education tax and how this is somehow a good thing. She’s now invited my DD for a play date, would you accept?

Anytime anyone agrees with the tax tell them now the local authority will have to spend £7k a year education the child.

So they are dumb.

And jealous

“Question 7: If you had been old enough to participate in the Brexit referendum, how would you have voted? Please use the pipe cleaners provided to build a 3D interpretative map”.

You should see the answers I get to question 98(b) explain your thoughts on the Palestine/Gaza conflict in macrame. Some responses are barely coherent. Dodged many a bullet with that one!

FFS 🤦🏻‍♀️ is this real?

Yes I understand, but this is malice towards children. She was over the moon the school had closed like it was a normal view, I just can’t reconcile that with being a good parent. Reading the comments, it seems people think I’m overreacting but I’m going to go with my gut on this one and politely decline. Thanks for the posts.

You need to give your head a wobble. I'm at the different end of the political spectrum from one of my friends. All her children were educated privately and DD was not.

We just don't talk politics.

You are being so utterly unreasonable to deny your DD's friendship opportunities.

If anything, this parent should avoid you for being a crashing snob.

I would think denying the play date over this is more malicious towards a child. Your child.

Macrame is such a tricky medium to engage with. May I suggest watercolour, to fully represent the nuance of the discussion? Next door’s 4 year old’s diptych of the trans debate was really compelling.

Jumpthewaves · 21/06/2025 13:21

Agree with it or not, calling it an 'education' tax is nonsense. It's a tax on luxury education.

Luxury education?.

Get a grip.

Plenty of reasons why children attend fee paying schools, including sen, armed forces, those requiring support.

We don't charge university vat

Stop being jealous

Is the red flag in the room with you now, OP? Maybe it’s red for SOCIALISM.

Yes run away now @BonnuitMy it might be catching - your child will end up wanting free university education and equality and all sort of dangerous stuff.

scoobysnaxx · 21/06/2025 13:23

YABMU to deny your daughter a blossoming friendship because you don’t agree with her mum on one issue?

crikey. Poor child. THAT is malicious towards your own child.

BonnuitMy · 21/06/2025 13:05

Her DD is lovely and the two seem to get on really well, it’s a shame but it’s a massive red flag.

Red flag? Do you mean this as the equivalent of “a card carrying labour supporter”, like they’re flying the red flag?

Or do you seriously think this woman is a danger to your child because she is anti private education?

What exactly is the “red flag” here? What’s the danger?

I'm not jealous, I find it hilarious when people trot out such nonsense. What exactly do you believe I may be jealous of?

Katypp · 21/06/2025 13:24

Surely the parents' political views have nothing whatsoever to do with a play date?
This modern thing of only mixing with (and allowing your children to mix with) people who hold your views is extremely worrying.
I fear for these children who have every single element of their lives micromanaged and curated to this extent.
Why would you want to do that?

You're probably right. Although I'm quite a fan of pointillism. Maybe that's a fair compromise? Possibly move macrame onto the more straightforward question of Northern Ireland independence. Feedback welcomed

PlasticAcrobat · 21/06/2025 13:27

YABU, for calling VAT an 'education tax'. It is a tax on the purchase of goods and services, from which the purchase of private schooling was anomalously exempt until this was rectified.

YABU, also, for making political disagreements (other than those that amount to hatred against victimised groups) a reason for limiting your children's ability to socialise.

Hoppinggreen · 21/06/2025 13:29

I think that this has been a very lucky escape - for the other parent

Ironically, you are the one not exhibiting good parenting here.

Seventree · 21/06/2025 13:30

I'm against private schools even existing. My DC have play dates with children who go/will go to private schools. I have friends who have chosen private school for their DC. It doesn't matter, people are allowed different opinions on things.

I wouldn't let my DC have play dates with people who were openly racist, homophobic etc. But opinions on private schools falls into the same camp as what political party they vote for or whether they choose to eat meat. Unless they are actively trying to get me to turn vegan or vote conservative I just don't care 🤷‍♀️

Pushmepullu · 21/06/2025 13:30

Reading this and other threads, it’s obvious the heat has gotten to some people.

Lins77 · 21/06/2025 13:32

Surely this thread cannot be for real.

This is not something I would say very often, but OP, you are off your rocker if you think this is a valid reason for denying your child a play date.

mugglewump · 21/06/2025 13:34

WTF! Parent at state school (assuming the girls' school is LA owned, as otherwise hypocritical) expresses positive reaction to private school closing. It is not usual for parents choosing state schools to champion a state education and consider private schooling a divisive privilege.

DurinsBane · 21/06/2025 13:35

Quite a few people have moral objections to private schools, I guess that is why she is happy it closed down. If you reject a play date based on someone’s opinions like this (it wasn’t like she said something racist, misogynistic or similar) then I think your child is going to struggle to make friends.

I think perhaps she should decline, were she to know your views!

So you're deliberately depriving your child of a friendship with a lovely child that she wants to spend time with? I can't reconcile that with being a good parent.

"Education the child"?

I know that's not grammatical, despite having gone to state schools 😄
