To think unless you’ve been to private school you don’t really understand why it’s so valuable?

I have so many people telling me the state system is fine, a private school just has better facilities, that the teachers aren’t any better, that the extra curricular stuff can be done after school at a state school but at a different venue etc etc…

whilst all the above is true, it isn’t what makes a private education valuable? And that you have to actually have lived it, been to one, to get the whole experience it gives you across the board and not just academically?

i think this is why a lot of people with ‘new money’ don’t always spend it on school fees. In contrast those who have been privately educated mostly want the same for their children.

I want to what is considered to be an excellent all girls private school (Top 10 in country). We had pretty much everything.

My direct experience of the levels of privilege and opportunities available to those who can buy them has made me a fervent advocate for the banning of private schools.

My DC go to a state comprehensive.

However I also know quite a few people who swore never to send their own kids to private, especially boarding school.

Often people who’ve been through the state system and know how awful it is don’t want their children to suffer through it as well.

Some state schools are ok, primary schools aren’t as bad because the kids who will eventually become awful people aren’t old enough to really be awful yet. It’s secondary school where the real problems start.

I went to both a state secondary and a private secondary. The biggest difference was how much safer I felt at my private school. I wasn't worried that I was going to have to witness or be subjected to any threatening or violent behaviour. Everything was much calmer.

I don't doubt this, but I felt exactly the same when I moved from a rough comp (where I was the nerdy kid) to an all girls grammar. Calm just about sums it up.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/06/2024 20:09

I went to private school in the 80s, it did sweet FA for me. My 2 both went to a state school, couldn't afford private school.

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 20:09

My husband went to boarding school from eight, I attended state school, its clear that I had a much broader or more rounded education. At his school GCSE options were picked for you, you had no say in the subjects selected, if you weren’t doing well they would change your subjects, if you continued to perform poorly you were asked to leave. On top of that bullying from staff was rife, there was also a serious problem with sexual assault from both staff and pupils.

lovelysunshine22 · 18/06/2024 20:10

I was state educated and would have privately educated my kids in a heartbeat if i could have afforded to! I think people who object to private schools are simply doing so out of spite and jealousy because they can't afford to do it!

What do you mean by new money? People who went to state schools, made a lot of money and are choosing state schools for their own children? People perhaps who had good experiences at state schools and are happy for their own kids to go to them?
What do you feel people with new money are missing out on?

Indeed. My husband and I had excellent state education. We now make enough money to send our two children privately, but have chosen state. They are both also receiving an excellent state education. They are keen readers, love sports and take music lessons – all encouraged and organised by the school.

Applepencilplant · 18/06/2024 20:10

I went to a dodgy London comp. I know why people like private school. I'm not stupid.

You can put a kid in prep school then cheat your way into state grammars.

This is not the view in my circle. Most can afford it and have opted out.

MerryGoSpherical · 18/06/2024 20:12

And some might perfectly understand why a private education is valuable, but think it's immoral that for something like education access mainly depends on wealth, so avoid it for that reason.

LadyMuckRake · 18/06/2024 20:13

Never did me any good.

I sent my children to local schools.

So, like a lot of people, I feel equipped to have an opinion. But I was happy with the choices I made.

Topofthemountain · 18/06/2024 19:55

And to think unless you have been through the state system you don't appreciate that private education isn't the be all and end all.

Exactly this. I could have all the money in the world and I wouldn’t send my kids to private school. I want them to grow up in the real world, and not be entitled brats.

FuzzyStripes · 18/06/2024 20:13

I think many people purely compare education to careers or future income without really understanding what else there is to it.

CurlewKate · 18/06/2024 20:13

"Very much depends on the state school on offer"

Ditto private.

Revolvingidea · 18/06/2024 20:14

Some awful comments on here already.

I think the opposite OP if that’s helpful to you. I think many who went to private school are at high risk of becoming ignorant of others, lacking in tolerance and understanding that there are people who live in vastly different circumstances to your own. My experience is that those who are private schooled usually all behave in a similar way and have similar viewpoints and opinions as adults. Take that however you wish.

Unfortunately only about 7% of people will be able to vote.

This. 93% of people don’t care OP. 93%!!!

My DD is ADHD / ASD and her private prep support her needs -state primary denied them..

OrwellianTimes · 18/06/2024 20:15

I went to private primary. Absolutely hated it. It was full of snobby rich parents who got what they wanted from the teachers. Bullying was rife and the teachers did nothing. I spent every day crying, hiding in the massive grounds during break, and I begged my parents to move me but they wouldn’t.

I switched to state for secondary (my choice - I insisted) I loved every moment of it. My peers from secondary from my class alone have gone on to be top surgeons, GP’s, politicians, lawyers and small business owners, and various other roles.

The only people I’ve heard of from my primary have been because they ended up in prison for fraud.

CelesteCunningham · 18/06/2024 20:15

I went to private school in Ireland and have no desire to send my DC private. Fortunately it's not necessary, state provision is excellent here in NI.

I'm mildly morally opposed to private schooling, and vehemently opposed at primary - I wouldn't want my DC growing up only having wealthy friends. I don't think it does anyone good to have such a blinkered view of the world.

Leidenschaft24 · 18/06/2024 20:15

Whar are you trying to achieve with this thread OP?

Screamingabdabz · 18/06/2024 20:16

I’m a sink comprehensive chav but you really don’t need to be a genius to work out why private school is ‘valuable’.

It buys your child the kind of privilege and status and networking that gives you the confidence to write an opener like that with such a gormless lack of self awareness and yet with full superiority.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Piggletta · 18/06/2024 20:16

I can see there are benefits, but to me not enough to justify 30-40k per year out of our take home pay. I'd rather be able to go on holiday and not stress about bills. Sorry kids - it's state for you.
