Where to buy a suit for sixth form ds

Hello,

ds needs a dark (charcoal, navy or pinstriped) suit for his sixth form uniform. I don’t want something that looks ill-fitting and shiny, but OTOH it needs to survive the wear and tear that a 16yo will give it.

I have another child at a different school and he had his suit made by the tailors near it - no other option, but I expect most people for ds’s school buy things ready-made.

For anyone else who’s been in this situation, where did you buy yours from?

DS went to Moss Bros. I know lots of others went to Next.

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2023 16:08

If they are a standard size, then I'd get second hand Next ones from Ebay. There are always loads of worn once suits so then they can have a few machine washable suits to rotate.

Dacadactyl · 16/07/2023 16:09

I'd go to next to gauge size if unsure and then look on vinted.

I bet there will be a few who've bought suits for a wedding/funeral and then decide to sell on when it becomes apparent they'll only ever wear it once.

Next. Lots of fitting options (tall/short etc), cheap (about £100 for a suit), mashine washable and didn't need ironing after tumble drying. Didn't look plasticky. The suits still look good after 2 years of 6th form, actually.

Although the trouser hems did all fall down after a while and I needed to tack them up again, but that was a relatively small job and they've been fine since then. Would 100% still recommend the suits overall.

Depends on your budget. Next, moss bros, M&S

UndercoverCop · 16/07/2023 16:16

Next or M&S , not for DS but DH he has court duty on a regular basis but often isn't called and the rest of the time is expected to dress very casually for work so no point buying expensive tailored suits. DH is tall but has a smallish waist 31/32 so the ability to buy jackets and trousers separately and in long/slim fit was really good. They also wash well and don't have that shiny look. He has a dark grey and a blue, although it's a bit bluer than navy if that makes sense! Also really easy returns for both so you can order a selection and send back what's not needed.

First one I got was from Moss Bross, second one was on sale at Hennes - absolute bargain and fits so nicely. Assume no one thinks of them hence why it was so cheap.

BoohooWoohoo · 16/07/2023 16:24

My son wore Primark and Next

tennissquare · 16/07/2023 16:51

I've been in my local M&S today, there isn't much stock left in some trouser sizes including online. Someone suggested Next as another option.

clary · 16/07/2023 17:48

Ds2 had his prom suit which was madly expensive (but did look good) from DKNY, Moss Bros I think. His other one was from M&S, much cheaper and washable too - well worth looking there as you buy the items separately so big jacket and slim trousers (or whatever you need). Same with Next too but he didn't like the choice there.

ouch44 · 16/07/2023 17:52

My DS has had 2 second hand Next suits off eBay/Vinted. Ex-prom suits so barely worn. They'll be lots very soon. We took him to next to try out for size and then bought them. Still going well and I mashine washed the dry clean only one and it's still fine!

QueenJulian · 16/07/2023 17:53

We bought a couple from Moss Bros and they lasted really well.

LubaLuca · 16/07/2023 17:54

One of my sons had to have a suit for a presentation (Challenge of Industry type thing), and we got him one from Matalan. The quality was no worse than Next, it was decent value.

Daisymay2 · 16/07/2023 18:01

First suit was from Moss Bros, but DS1 grew out of it after 2 terms. It was a pain as dry clean only and when worn daily really needed cleaning at half term and hoidays. Thereafter for both DS's went to M&S for washable wool. Even managed to buy one when had an offer on. As others have said the ability to buy the right size jacket and trousers rather than complete suit from Moss Bros was a bonus. We sold the Moss Bros suit at a second hand uniform sale at school, so people do buy second hand for 6th Form.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 16/07/2023 18:02

Whatever you get I recommend one that’s machine washable.

Clymene · 16/07/2023 18:03

I've got one from M&S. DS is so skinny that adult trousers don't fit him so got a navy washable one for £85

yyyy to this. DKNY one is dry clean only, what a pain. M&S machine wash and dries really quickly, looks good too.

Geordieoldgirl · 16/07/2023 18:34

We've had machine washable suits for school from M and S and from Next. Not so impressed with M and S, but the Next ones are excellent. They look great, and wash brilliantly. Can't remember what we paid (think it was round £100) but I thought that was very reasonable for the quality.

EmeraldFox · 16/07/2023 18:40

DS has a jacket and two pairs of trousers from m&s, wool blend but fine to wash on a wool/delicates cycle. They rarely need washing it's mostly just the shirts.

Iwasafool · 16/07/2023 18:42

M&S and really good to buy 2nd pair of trousers as the trousers tend to wear faster than the jacket.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 16/07/2023 18:46

Slaters is good for sixth form suits.

IndiganDop · 16/07/2023 18:47

Dobell is where I got my ds' suits. They have some incredible bargains esp in smaller waist sizes which teens tend to be.

Example suit - 39.99!

Last year both my son's suits were from M and S. We are suit shopping again for upper 6th on Saturday. He has to have at least two.

I'm glad that I bought DS a suit with a bit of room to grow, it would be expensive buying twice!

secondspring · 17/07/2023 20:50

Yes unfortunately my son has had several growth spurts in the last year so have to buy more. lol
