Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

Sounds like to me that she was abit to comfortable at school

That would have been a good time to move post GCSE to college.

Be one hell of a shock when she goes to University.

Well we know many kids who followed her route and are doing just fine. Like my son who followed the same path last year (very different subject) and has thrived and loved his first year at university. No ‘hell of a shock’ in sight. Sorry to disappoint ;-)

Some of their friends changed school and also did ok.

GCSister · 25/07/2023 19:54

Not necessarily..... I went to 6th form
and uni wasn't a shock at all. Just like it wasn't for loads of my friends.

You make some ridiculous assumptions

thegreenline · 25/07/2023 19:56

@RetinaRouge So neither of your kids considered college ?

If so why not ?

Academic kids at an academic school, wanting to study academic subjects at an academic university. No vocational inclinations at all. At a school they loved.

There would be little gained by moving to a college unless they really wanted to. I would have been fine for them to go but it made no sense for them at that point.

They also made new friends in sixth form so I don’t think they lost out much socially.

pointythings · 25/07/2023 20:01

Neither of mine found Uni a shock - except in how great it was compared to a not very nice small town where you couldn't safely be out and gay, where the last bus on a Saturday left at just gone 6 pm and where there was zero art, music or culture.

It's a shame you still have zero understanding of the fact that different young people have different needs, wants, skills and dreams. There isn't such a thing as a one size fits all solution - not in any aspect of real life.

thegreenline · 25/07/2023 20:05

@RetinaRouge Do you think you could have encouraged something vocational ?

@pointythings A one size fits all approach as you put it could be beneficial as it would save many hours and ££ in terms of budget.

pointythings · 25/07/2023 20:06

If you think education should solely be about money, the Tory party is >>>> that way Hmm. Well done, you've hit a new low.

Money saved in one place can be used in another.

For example we could have more practical training in the field.

There was no need. They had found their passion and were excited about their subjects. No interest in a vocational career.

Oddly enough, fieldwork is part of a lot of STEM courses at University... It's also part of A level Biology and Geography.

I mean training for proper vocations and jobs. Like Bricklaying, Electrical, Plumbing, training as a chef or hgv driver.

Jobs we need in the UK.

We also need more nurses, teachers, careers advisers.......they're also proper jobs

Not to sure about more career advisors.

Your not exactly brook street when it comes to finding people jobs.

One Economics and the other Chemistry.

RetinaRouge · 25/07/2023 20:30

One Economics and the other Chemistry.

Whilst both subjects are noble and have useful applications.

I have studied economics in the past and enjoyed it.

Chemistry I will admin I was less successful at.

But why not discuss an alternative vocational route.

DollyTrolly · 25/07/2023 20:36

Not to sure about more career advisors.

There is an acknowledged skills shortage of qualified careers advisers. That's a fact.

Your not exactly brook street when it comes to finding people jobs.

You don't understand what careers advisers do, so you're hardly well placed to make this comment.

But hey, you got to insult me again! Well done 🙄

I can’t give a different answer to the first time you asked this. Sorry.

I will come back and post if they regret it. On this or another new thread you create!

Jobs we need in the UK.

We also need doctors, engineers, teachers, architects - and yes, marine biologists, because without preserving our planets, we will soon not need any jobs at all.

Your definition of a 'proper' job is as narrow as your mindset.

thegreenline · 25/07/2023 20:43

@DollyTrolly We don`t need more careers advisors. We need more work placement and training opportunities I feel.

It`s less of an insult and more of a put down.

@RetinaRouge Hopefully they don`t.

pointythings · 25/07/2023 20:45

It isn't a career advieor's job to find people jobs. Maybe understand that first before insulting a poster who has consistently engaged with you in good faith and with more courtesy than you deserve than I can muster.

DollyTrolly · 25/07/2023 20:50

We don`t need more careers advisors. We need more work placement and training opportunities I feel.

We need both.

It`s less of an insult and more of a put down.

And you think that's an acceptable to way to speak to people? Do you speak to people like this in real life? Do you tell them their jobs are pointless?

I would never disrespect any career I thought was worthwhile, hard work for fairly minimal pay or a regularly looked down upon when they shouldn't be.

‘Put-downs’ are not respectful and don’t help debate. Especially if someone isn’t being rude to you.
