Pagan faith school / college

There are many faith schools, but no Pagan ones, and I'd be interested to hear some opinions on the subject. Would you like to have attended one, or would you consider sending your children to one in the future, for example?

I already feel sorry for the world wide community of kids destined for this school

Why?

Fairislefandango · 07/04/2023 18:20

You do realise that it's very difficult for schools which pay actual salaries to find enough teachers these days? I can't imagine where you think you'd find teachers willing to work for free!

That's actually the easy part.

I feel that this thread has adequately answered the original question!

I'm not sure of the ethics of a school which expected teachers to work for free either tbh. Not in the real world rather than some utopian ideal.

DaughtersofFrya · 07/04/2023 18:20

That needn't be the case. Community work should be an important feature of the school.

I'm afraid you are far too idealistic. You cannot replicate a childhood living with parents and the wider society of family and friends plus normal everyday life, at a boarding school, with the religious element thrown in you cannot avoid the bubble.

and thinking teachers will volunteer?

as said there would mostly be a certain type of parent willing to send there dc away to this pagan school. They are the exact type that would want there dc indoctrinated and brought up in a religious bubble.

Fairislefandango · 07/04/2023 18:28

Really? Excellent- I guess you'd better be put in charge of solving the recruitment and retention crisis in teaching then. About time somebody did something about it.

Eventysaurus · 07/04/2023 18:29

Sounds like a shit idea.

Fairislefandango · 07/04/2023 18:30

Although you may be right that it would be marginally easier than finding enough parents in one place who would want to send their children to a pagan school!

Finding teachers is not an issue.

As you say, there are some who would welcome such a school, though they would presumably not wish to characterise it in such a way.

Maybe you are lucky enough to live in an area where there are still good state schools.

@DaughtersofFrya

So you can find the teachers

You think there are enough parents who are interested

You can get the donations to fund it

I am sure one of the donors will provide you with the premises

Go ahead start the school

TBH the vast majority pagans who join lots pagan groups, are usually bloody loud "look at me! I'm pagan! with a capital P!" I imagine they'd be your main clientele, which sounds right up your street OP.

I stand by this quote and there was no need for you to have disputed it.

I also stand by the fact there should be no faith schools at all.

All of this. You are talking like someone else should do it. If you think that you can get teachers to work for free, find the building and funding then crack on. No one is stopping you.

YomAsalYomBasal · 07/04/2023 18:45

You sound like a fantasist, sorry.
There are secular schools with an alternative ethos who embrace nature in their work already. Pagan is too much of a minority to fill a whole school. And the vast majority of people with that kind of thinking will absolutely not want their children in a residential school.

I disputed it because it isn't the case. Only a small minority are like that.

Finding teachers is not an issue.

In what world?

There's literally a teacher recruitment crisis happening now.

Some will, though. It's good for such an option to exist.

Is this hypotentical or something you are actually trying to get off the ground?

Even if you find teachers to work for free (?? How are they going to support themselves?) you would need a premises, cleaning staff, catering staff, medical and residential staff, resources etc - and that's before you start thinking about the legal/mandatory licenses and admin involved in setting up a school. I don't really see how you could achieve all this without a huge amount of experience, time and money.

It does sound like it would be a very sweet school. I'm a Christian without children but I wouldn't be averse to sending hypothetical children there.

In a world with a worldview that values contribution to the greater good over money.

Paganism was covered in my sons Catholic school under RE. I was amazed and pleased to see it there alongside other belief systems.

Yes, plans have been underway for some time. Looking into all the legal issues you mention is exactly what's taking the time.

Oh wow, okay. Well, good luck. More choice in education can only be a good thing.
