Pagan faith school / college

There are many faith schools, but no Pagan ones, and I'd be interested to hear some opinions on the subject. Would you like to have attended one, or would you consider sending your children to one in the future, for example?

I already feel sorry for the world wide community of kids destined for this school

I feel more sorry for your kids tbh

They are mostly state schools.

they are state school, yes, but their funding doesn't all come from the state, for example, their buildings are not owned, maintained or repaired by the state, mostly

there we go, exactly

many steiners consider themselves pagan

many others consider steiner pagan

They pray to the being of the fire, the being of the earth, and so on, they are all hung up on angel type beings and reincarnation and so on

They define themselves as pagan

what is it about them that you specifically consider not to be pagan?

I suspect you are trying to define them as Pagan from the perspective of an outsider. Neither Steiner schools, nor Pagans, consider Steiner schools as Pagan.

Don’t worry, they won’t be at the pagan school

Steiner schools are not pagan! They're an obscure esoteric sort of Christian. They very much follow a Christian calendar and believe in that version God and creation. They add in some pre Christian gubbins as well, but they're definitely Christian at the root.

They are totally not Christian, at all, the only christian aspect is they call some of their beings "guardian angels" which are words from a christian tradition

They pray to fires, and they pray to the earth, and they believe in reincarnation. They do not in any sense beleive in Jesus Christ. ( or in one God, I dont think)

there is nothing christian in steiner schools

well, the steiners I know refer to themselves as Pagan, but you still have not explained why you dont.

DaisyWaldron · 07/04/2023 17:48

I don't think many pagan families would send their kids to boarding school for the sake of a religious education which would be better carried within their own community, in their own religious tradition and in their own part of the country.

LongLostNailVarnish · 07/04/2023 17:49

I'm pagan, I would not like to have sent my kids to a 'pagan' school.

I don't think we should have faith schools at all.

I think schools should inform children of the wide variety of religions out there though, and yes it would be nice if the covered the general values of paganism. (The elements, and sabbats) But schools shouldn't be tied to any particular religion.

DaughtersofFrya · 07/04/2023 17:49

Nimbostratus100 · 07/04/2023 17:46

well, the steiners I know refer to themselves as Pagan, but you still have not explained why you dont.

I consider them to be a part of the New Age movement. An influential and early part of it, along with Anthroposophy, Theosophy, etc. But this is not the same as Paganism, which has a different history and worldview.

please explain why you dont count steiner schools as pagan

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 07/04/2023 17:50

I would have been very interested in a Pagan school when the DC were small. (Although some of the in-laws would have had forty fits. ) As it was, we had to go to an out of catchment school as the closest options are CofE and are forever trailing off to churches which I wasn't happy about at all.

I think it's up to you to explain, in detail, why you think they are. You've already had answers from a member here in a position to know.

Some would, and some wouldn't.

And you're back again to the question of financial viability. You'll need sufficient pagans who are parents who have such a strong faith to send their child across country to school, for which they will need to pay.

LongLostNailVarnish · 07/04/2023 17:59

TBH the vast majority pagans who join lots pagan groups, are usually bloody loud "look at me! I'm pagan! with a capital P!" I imagine they'd be your main clientele, which sounds right up your street OP.

A very important point. Such a school would be funded by donations, and any parental fees would be very much geared towards ability to pay.

Most Pagans are not actually like that. It's only the ones people see, who are. For fairly obvious reasons.

I want all religion out of schools, but if I had to pick, I'd choose pagan over xtianity.

Where are you getting the donations from?
Where are you finding teachers?

if you'd read my other post you'd know I am pagan, I know pagans.

I was pointing out what your main clientele would be made up of.

most pagans just get on with quiet life don't mind their dc being exposed to other religions or the real world there dc will grow up to be adults in, there for don't want or need to send their dc miles away to live in a religious bubble.

Teachers could work on a voluntary basis, at least at first. As for donations, when asked, the Pagan community can be quite generous. Some years ago it raised enough money to by the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire. This was funded in large part by people taking buckets round to Pagan moots and festivals, collecting coins.

Just some examples, anyway. There are many possible solutions.

It wouldn't be a bubble or cut off from the world in any way.

Many Pagans are satisfied with the state education system. An increasing number are not.

Ummm... what?! Why would they do that?

LongLostNailVarnish · 07/04/2023 18:17

Boarding school are always cut off and operate in a bubble. Life is within the school add in the heavy alternative religion......

That needn't be the case. Community work should be an important feature of the school.
