what would you think about this change to UNIFORM for reception class please....

at the moment reception children have to wear the full school uniform : grey skirt and tights, or trousers (for boys)
White shirt/blouse
School tie
school jumper/cardigan
Grey or white socks or tights
Black shoes (not trainers)

the reception class will now wear: black tracksuit bottoms (shorts in the summer, cycling shorts for girls) white polo shirt, school jumper. no tie.

what would you think?

It's probably a kind of natural selection of parents, too. An awful lot might like the school but be, you know, too casual about the uniform and conclude in casual manner that frankly they couldn't be @rsed.

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 17:05

a boater

I don't suppose it is possible that there might, just conceivably, be some snobbery attached to this uniform malarky?

No Harpsichord Carrier, surely not!

There are many good things about DD1's school, but the boater is not one of them. It's a pain on so many levels, not least that I can't take her anywhere after school without getting her changed first as I'm just too embarrassed.

In fairness I should add that she likes the uniform.

serenity · 27/03/2007 17:20

Don't really think it's down to the school to teach children how to dress themselves tbh. Surely there's a few things we should be teaching them at home?

PeachyClair · 27/03/2007 17:32

They have the trackies option at our school, I didnt need to take it for ds1 and ds2 but y know not all kids are physically very well coordinated and if they can be independent at dressing and toileting, worth the giving up of snobbey for?

Ours dont wear ties in reception (mine full stop and nobody will challenge me LOL- mean bitch moi?) and they have polo shirts too.

If it helps then great.

PeachyClair · 27/03/2007 17:34

Agree Serenity, but not all kids are just able to do it yet. Remember some kids in reception turned four very recently indeed- and plenty of schools like ours dont do staggered entry.

FWIW my older 2 could do so not being defensive LOL, and DS3 should have his own LSA>

Greenleeves · 27/03/2007 17:38

I think it's an excellent idea to switch to comfy, practical clothes that are easy to take care of and won't impede movement. It pisses me off when I see little girls in silly little skirts and tights and school ties. It is just snobbery IMO, coupled with the fact that some parents think that being able to fawn over primary school children decked out like little dollies is MUCH more important than the children's comfort and how much fun they have running about climbing on stuff.

Uniform sucks anyway IMO. But if there has to be one it should be comfy and practical.

And there's a certain democratic irony in devising a uniform (cycling shorts, lol) that everyone will look equally ludicrous in

serenity · 27/03/2007 17:39

That was answering the opinion (further down the thread)that if they wear tracksuit bottoms in reception, then the school would only have to teach them to dress and undress in YR1, PC Mine were Ok, but slow by Yr1, but would have really struggled with the shirt/tie thing in nursery and reception (which is why I'm glad we have those horrible common joggers in those classes )

PeachyClair · 27/03/2007 17:40

Anyway- don't Boden do Joggers?

Best give Johnny a bell, tell him you need them labelled conspicuously

JoPG · 27/03/2007 17:59

DS used to wear a school tracksuit and polo shirt in nursery class (ie - the year before he started reception). The girls wore the same. In the summer they wore PE shorts and a polo shirt. It was fine and he was happy. Did look a bit funny with black school shoes, but he thought he looked smart!

harpsi hasnt ANYONE suggested a polo shirt with no tie and a pair of pull on trousers?

instead of the, quite frankly, bizarre combo that the teacher has come up with?

or they could compromise on cycling shorts AND a shirt and tie

then they would all look like the lead singer from ACDC

PeachyClair · 27/03/2007 20:18

Can I put in a suggestion please for the uniform to include the noxious banana yellow polo and bottle green jumper combo, as seen near here?

Sometimes I am so glad that the boys wear Navy (until I remember they're the only school that does so only the expensive specialist shop stocks the colours )

bozza · 28/03/2007 10:06

REally pc? Loads of schools round here have navy. Ours has just stopped it as an option and gone onto grey and red.

bundle · 28/03/2007 10:11

lol @ this thread

hippipotami · 28/03/2007 17:02

Our nursery wears joggers (bottle green ones) and red polo shirts. The reception always had the traditional grey stuff (trousers/shorts/skirts/pinnies) teamed with red poloshirt and bottle green sweatshirt. However, they have now said that from September onwards reception children can also wear the green joggers. It is hardly worth calling it a uniform now as there are so many variations!

But musn't grumble, at least we have not been given the option of cycle shorts!
