what would you think about this change to UNIFORM for reception class please....

at the moment reception children have to wear the full school uniform : grey skirt and tights, or trousers (for boys)
White shirt/blouse
School tie
school jumper/cardigan
Grey or white socks or tights
Black shoes (not trainers)

the reception class will now wear: black tracksuit bottoms (shorts in the summer, cycling shorts for girls) white polo shirt, school jumper. no tie.

what would you think?

I would think that tracksuit bottoms would make me want to spit with anger

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2007 10:28

i would think that it was an odd choice of clothing (i personally hate tracksiut bottoms) and if you are having top but uniform anyway, why not buy the real one? leave out the tie maybe though for receptions

scotlou · 27/03/2007 10:28

Seems a good idea to me.

cazzybabs · 27/03/2007 10:28

much more practical bothfor washing and for the childrne gettign dressed and undresssed. Not as smart, I would be in favour of it.

Mind you not sure about cycling shorts - what about a nice summer dress?

Twiglett · 27/03/2007 10:29

tracksuit bottoms are for sports only

it is not an item of clothing for everyday wear

it is chavvy and ugly

what's wrong with a pair of school trousers .. they all come with elasticated waists at that age

Iota · 27/03/2007 10:29

I would prefer polo shirts and school trousers, which is what most schools round here do

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 10:29

what's wrong with tracksuit bottoms?

OP posts:
Enid · 27/03/2007 10:29

horrible

esp the cyckling shorts

Enid · 27/03/2007 10:30

although good they have gottne rid of tie

god I hate ties on kids

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 10:30

these are 4 year olds though, in the sand pit and digging in the garden and painting and stuff

Twiglett · 27/03/2007 10:30

by cycling shorts do they mean the tight-fitting lycra style ones .. if they do why should girls have to wear them why can't they wear normal baggy shorts?

what the hell is that about?

Twiglett · 27/03/2007 10:31

but harpsi .. there have to be some standards .. and tracksuits are for SPORTS

ScottishThistle · 27/03/2007 10:31

Cycling shorts!

Enid · 27/03/2007 10:32

for a start cycling shorts and jumper and polo shirt...?

what the hell is that all about?

it will look ridiculous

GameGirly · 27/03/2007 10:33

Not sure that it is more practical for washing, Cazzy. Tackie bums can be quite thick and take ages to dry, whereas trousers, skirts and dresses dry dead quickly.

I think it's horrid, Harpsi - chavvy, untidy and slobby!

Enid · 27/03/2007 10:33

sorry but I would be v unhappy

tracky bottoms are for BABIES not reception kids IMO

rather have no school uniform than that

MrsBadger · 27/03/2007 10:33

Agree grey school trousers for both boys and girls would be a good compromise, with polo shirt and jumper.

cycling shorts, wtf?!

daisy1999 · 27/03/2007 10:33

eughh! definately chavvy. I don't see what's wrong with the original uniform.

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 10:35

Twig I am not expressing an opinion, I am asking for opinions.
the cat is certainly right among the blardy pigeons here.

why do the girls have to wear cycling shorts? Dd would have hated that, she would have felt self concious in those, and she prefers skirts anyway. IMO if there is goign to be a casual version it should be optional alongside the traditional uniform.
I agree with the polo shirts and trousers/skirt option too. Ds1 can't manage buttons very well at all, so if he had to wear a shirt he'd really struggle.
Don't like tracksuit bottoms neither. DS1 had them for preschool, but only because they were easy for him to dress himself in and he was only 3.

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 10:37

if reception is seriously for playing then what standards precisely do we need to preserve?
and who can play or paint or splodge or dig in the garden, really, in a shirt, tie, skirt and tights?

OP posts:

That's what we do - nursery and reception wear royal blue jogging bottoms (navy shorts or blue gingham dresses in the summer), and yellow polo shirts. Yr1 upwards wear navy skirts/trousers, navy jumpers, shirts and ties, and have the joggers/polo shirts as PE Kit. I liked it - it meant that the DSs were able to dress themselves for school, shirts and ties would have been too fiddly in reception. Also, they didn't have to change for PE, which must save the teachers a few headaches!

Twiglett · 27/03/2007 10:37

I know .. I'm giving an opinion

actually I appear more to be thrusting an opinion down your throat

is this happening at your school? or are they considering it .. I don't see an issue with amending the uniform to remove the school tie for younger ages .. but the whole chav / sexist approach to the uniform would piss me right orf

polo shirt and jumpers
school trousers (both sexes) or dresses
school shorts (both sexes) or summer dresses
grey socks (white socks are for bovver boys and sports)
black shoes

that's acceptable to me
