what would you think about this change to UNIFORM for reception class please....

at the moment reception children have to wear the full school uniform : grey skirt and tights, or trousers (for boys)
White shirt/blouse
School tie
school jumper/cardigan
Grey or white socks or tights
Black shoes (not trainers)

the reception class will now wear: black tracksuit bottoms (shorts in the summer, cycling shorts for girls) white polo shirt, school jumper. no tie.

what would you think?

I don't madly mind trackie bottoms...

berolina · 27/03/2007 13:14

Trackie bottoms? Cycling shorts?? Nah.

I do think the whole shirt-and-tie thing is a bit OTT at reception, though.

SoupDreggon · 27/03/2007 13:16

I think that the whole of KS1 should ditch the tie and proper shirt in favour of a polo shirt. Don't much like track bottoms. Most trousers for that age are elasticated waist anyway aren't they?? DSs always were.

maisym · 27/03/2007 13:19

cycling shorts - the lo's will get hot & be uncomfortable - what's wrong with loose shorts or a skirt?

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:24

a hidden agenda?? really? like what?
the cycling shorts are cotton ones, quite good quailty.
tbh I am boggling at how much rumpus there is over this. can of worms doesn't even begin to describe it

(actually the cycling shorts are my favourite part. dd1 wears cycling shorts almostevery day in the summer. they are so practical and don't get in the way for climbing and er cycling)

oh, yes probably. she did say that she spent a lot of time getting the children dressed and undressed. which must be tiresome.
(MI kindly bugger off with your sniggering )

Thinking about it, my DD1 also wears them. They look rather nice. On her. In pink, but they don't have to be pink iyswim.

beckybrastraps · 27/03/2007 13:28

Do some parents want to keep the full shirt and tie regalia then?

maisym · 27/03/2007 13:28

thought you meant the lycra shorts - do the cotton shorts cover the knees? - to stop all the cuts when they fall over?

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:29

dd1 is a skinny little thing, like many girls of her age.
her shorts are mainly green though. and yellow, and orange.

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:30

they are cotton lycra, above the knee shorts.
it seems everyone (besides me) wants to keep the whole regalia.
there is much Crossness.

IMO tracksuit pants are suitbale wearing arounf the house and going to the park. Not good for school, there pretty much ruined after a couple of washes.
No tie is a good idea.
Dont see the point of the cycling shorts bit.
Polo shirts are OK, but prefer the other ones.

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:34

the cycling shorts are for the summer, and I think the idea is that they are more flattering for girls.

beckybrastraps · 27/03/2007 13:36

How odd.

I wouldn't relish sticking a tie round ds's neck every morning.

IMO the full regalia ends up looking scruffier than the sweatshirt ensemble: shirts untucked, ties askew...

Perhaps they harbour "Just William" style fantasies...

Is it a private school? Does the uniform have a certain social cachet?

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:38

Christ, no it's a state primary, in a (fancy pants) village, but close to a (somewhat scummy) small town. it's a v popular school and quite hierarchical.
It's about 200 yards from my house and I am Deeply Ambivalent about it.
does it show?

Today my ds (in reception) is wearing jeans and a navy long sleeved t-shirt and brown boots/shoes things. He looked very nice this morning. Will be a wreck by 3.30.

oliveoil · 27/03/2007 13:41

what about some hipster pants and a crop top

I saw some one shoulder jobbies in Next (I kid you not)

beckybrastraps · 27/03/2007 13:44

Ah, then there will be a certain one-upmanship...

Perhaps they take their be-uniformed children on a tour of the scummy town before bringing them to school, to show off their fancy togs.

FWIW, although I still shudder at the thought of cyclling shorts, jumper and school shoes, I still say more power to the teacher's elbow, and hope it's the start ofthe slippery slope for the tyranny of ties and small children.

HotXMum · 27/03/2007 13:45

Hate all this casual business. I think it encourages a casual attitude!

liquidclocks · 27/03/2007 13:46

[liquid ducks as may get shot at]

If we're going casual I'd much rather see little boys and girl in jeans - hard wearing, cheap, easy to clean and, i think, look 100 x beeter than trackies and 1000 x better than cycling shorts.

harpsichordcarrier · 27/03/2007 13:46

yes, it is That Sort Of Village.
(present company excepted).
