Things are unravelling for our Michael. What do you think will become of him? If he goes I will hold a partySmile

They were paid off for incompetence and left very quickly.

cotwatcher · 11/06/2014 21:36

noble giraffe, I accept that many independent schools select their intake. Of course they do. Many, however, work on a system of "first come first served" ie if their child's name is down early enough the child gets a place....certainly in many independent prep schools this is how it works

stillenacht1 · 11/06/2014 21:36

Also indie schools have at their disposal far more pounds per pupil than state or academy. The culture is completely different... Parents paying actually has a huge effect on parental involvement and pupil outcome.

What about them?

noblegiraffe · 11/06/2014 21:42

I see, cot, to get my kid into this independent prep school I simply need to put my kid's name on a list?

No wait, there are fat fees to pay. Of course having fees is a way of selecting your intake. No poor people.

Then you are also selecting kids whose parents are interested enough in their education to have thought about it early enough to get their name on that list. That's another way of selecting.

Then there's being able to boot out any undesirables as soon as they raise their ugly, or possibly not academic enough head. Another form of selection.

You seem a bit naive if you think these independent prep schools are simply taking all-comers.

Find me the independent school that costs the same per pupil as a state school (just under £5000 per year)?
Find me the independent school with fees sufficiently low so as not to exclude the 50% of households with income of under £20,000 ?
Find me the independent school that does not select in any way shape or form - but still gets great results from its kids?
THEN we are comparing like with like.

This term DH has been to a well known public school, several comps, a couple of religious secondaries, a couple of academies and a whole range of infant, primary, junior, prep and pre prep schools, special schools for physical and learning difficulties.

Teachers who are teaching in ALL sectors do not like the constant meddling and petty interference from Gove.

"it is easy to insult when you don't like what others are saying. Just because I disagree with you does not mean that I don't know what I am talking about."

It is not an insult to point out your lack of knowledge. You are indeed entitled to your opinion but you lack of knowledge and your insults do not add weight to your POV.

cotwatcher · 11/06/2014 22:29

When did I say I was comparing like with like? Of course independent schools have more money per pupil than state schools.....did I say they had equal funds? Did I say it was fair.....life is not fair.
You assume I lack knowledge because I don't agree with your views. I know many teachers and parents who DO agree with Gove. I certainly do.

Feenie · 11/06/2014 22:31

Hi Sarah! I claim my £5.

P.S. Next time you try to masquerade as a teacher, bone up on the correct pay and conditions. You'll look slightly less ridiculous.

Slightly.

ravenAK · 11/06/2014 22:32

well, no, I'd assume you lack knowledge because of the fact that you don't know about performance management or about unpaid school holidays.

You are absolutely entitled to your own opinions; just not your own facts.

ravenAK · 11/06/2014 22:34

Bit entry level even for Mrs G, this one.

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2014 22:35

But you want schools to be run as businesses : state schools are clearly much more efficient businesses than private schools - they get similar results for their top pupils with far smaller budgets and cover the pupils that independent schools are incapable of handling.

Maybe we should close all the independent schools and hand the management to the better business people in the state sector Grin

And yes, many parents agree with bits of what Gove has done, but vanishingly few agree with the way he has done it
the complete lack of strategic business planning
and the fact that he does not seem to give a shit about the pupils.

I still do not believe that you know lots of teachers who like him.
The only LEA that DH has not worked in is Cleveland : you must live there.

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2014 22:36

feenie / raven its Dominic, not Sarah - game on.

noblegiraffe · 11/06/2014 22:37

It is bizarre that someone would claim to have worked recently as a state sector teacher but not know how many holidays we get, or that we don't all get annual increments or what sort of salary an NQT gets.

That was even more unbelievable than the claim to know loads of teachers who like Gove.

creamteas · 11/06/2014 22:38

life is not fair

Clearly if you are in favour of perpetuating inequalities then the Gove is your man.

Personally I don't think we should be aiming to ensure that all children have a chance to succeed in life. And Gove's educational policy is not designed to do this.

Feenie · 11/06/2014 22:40

Total fantasy - you couldn't not know.

ravenAK · 11/06/2014 22:44

Isn't Dominic supposed to be quite bright if decidedly bonkers?

Not convinced, although that would indeed be hilarious...

noblegiraffe · 11/06/2014 22:45

Who is Dominic?

TalkinPeace · 11/06/2014 22:47

Noble Enjoy dominiccummings.wordpress.com/the-odyssean-project-2/ Hmm

LuluJakey1 · 11/06/2014 22:54

creamteas 'Personally, I don't think we should be aiming to ensure that all children have a chance to succeed in life'

Errrr......have I misunderstood this? Or have you made a mistake? Or was it supposed to be sarcastic and I am just tired and have mis-interpreted your intention. You did not mean what you wrote did you? Please tell me you didn't!

noblegiraffe · 12/06/2014 00:59

So Dominic was until recently Gove's 'main advisor'? I can't find anywhere on his list of things he has worked on which suggests any experience in education, which is a bit worrying.

BoneyBackJefferson · 12/06/2014 06:49

cotwatcher

You lack knowledge because you don't know the number of teachers holidays, their pay system and performance management system. These alone are fairly significant holes in your argument.

rollonthesummer · 12/06/2014 07:20

This!
