Anyone still out there?!

May have seen you then. Clearly they are flying through lots of children! The rows was a bit odd, but at one school the chairs were in oval groups, more of less forcing you into small talk!

Thanks Basildon. Just got the letter this morning. Will ring them Monday morning. Thanks once again.

Brownsugar3879 · 25/01/2014 13:50

I hope all has gone well with today's interviews.

MrsSteptoe · 25/01/2014 14:05

DS had his Trinity interview. He came out touchingly convinced that he did really well. Apparently he congratulated them on their uniqueness. I've got absolutely no idea what compelled him to say that, but I can only assume it made some kind of sense in context.,..

LadyMuck · 25/01/2014 14:08

Thanks brownsugar, and well done to your ds. Think Trinity and Reigate are also interviewing today.

Alleyns questions were interesting, and seemed to be trying to work out how socially aware the children were. Wish I'd gone through our diary more carefully with ds, as when he was asked about his plans for the weekend, his focus was on the fact that he was hoping to have KFC for lunch!

The poor sod has done 2 music exams, a drama exam, maths, English and reasoning exams as well as several interviews all in the last few weeks, and we are now DONE. Piles of prospectuses all ready for the bonfire...

Lol MrsSteptoe!

Do you have another week to go?

Thanks for all insights and advise ..invaluable.Also v funny at times

AliceLostinWonderland · 25/01/2014 15:22

Had our Trinity interview. DS came out so positive, I thought I could use his positive energy to charge my Hybrid!
Its all over and done with. Phew! Now just wait.

ipreferletters · 25/01/2014 18:07

Feedback post T interview: many parents in same room, good to see who the contestants are. Comments about 'how bad is the system and where is English education going'. DS gone for 40mins with a little group of boys, he was interviewed for 20mins. I have never seen DS so confident, he was smiling and jumping around afterwards, but I think it is because he enjoyed it. Usual questions plus : what is the worst thing that is happening in the world.
I hope this is useful for next week's interviewees
Waiting for Godot...

AliceLostinWonderland · 26/01/2014 10:46

MrsSteptoe, ipreferletters all of our DSs came out super confident from the interview. Either it truly went well or...credit due to the interviewer!

There was discussion earlier on this thread about the HM taking potential scholarship candidate's parents to his office for a chat. I didn't particularly notice that Hmm.

MrsSteptoe · 26/01/2014 11:29

Yes, Alice, I've noticed the common theme. The interviewers seem to have a real knack, don't they? Either that or Mumsnet boys do better than the average! I never did have any expectation of a scholarship, so I tend to be a bit unobservant around that...

MrsSteptoe · 26/01/2014 11:41

*that should be "theme!" - would that we could edit MN comments like we can on FB. The exclamation mark is essential to indicate a light-hearted approach to all of this... fa la la.

Marni23 · 26/01/2014 12:06

Alice based on our experience last year I think they might interview potential scholars at the same time (although probably in more than one session). When we were there it was very quiet and the only other parents in the room were taken off by the HM after he'd seen me.

Marni23 · 26/01/2014 12:08

Sorry, meant to say glad that the interviews are going well. Hope you feel better soon Mrs Steptoe I seem to remember feeling very flat after the exams/interviews were over last year too.

Brownsugar3879 · 26/01/2014 12:28

Alice Last year (10+) I requested to see the HM while Ds was being interviewed only because I wanted to find out how he has done in his test and find out what sort of HM was he and whats expected in the boys. Didn't apply for any scholarship or bursary. So I don't think being called by the HM means scholarship as such.
I've requested to see the HM and again Ds has not applied for any schol.

bananadrama · 26/01/2014 12:38

We were at T on Saturday too. My DS actually went as far to say he enjoyed his interview! Again, well done to the interviewer. Re. academic scholarships, we were really hoping for our DS to be considered for one as he has passed his grammar school tests. We know that they were interviewing those boys & parents re. academic scholarships during this past week at T. So looks like he is not in the running for one. How much do these schools allow for an off day? He seemed to struggle with the comprehension in the T test, which is very unusual for him, & he didn't finish all the questions.

LadyMuck · 26/01/2014 12:39

We asked about the pastoral side at T, ie whether teachers stay with boys for more than one year , and how was the continuity year on year. HM said that they have some teacher who are very good at the junior end so stay there each year to induct. I supsect that the ones who work better with 6th formers don't get involved with the 10+ interviews.

We happened to know ds's interviewer, and he is indeed fab with boys at this age. I would be worried about any boy who didn't come out happy and cheerful after 10 minutes with him.

On the other hand I haven't the faintest idea as to how they manage to differentiate between all of these candidates. They mostly seem like lovely lads on their very best behaviour to me. There must be something that they see in interview. I think that one of the SW schools (Hampton?) interviews the top few (for scholarships), the next band just get offers, and then there is a more "borderline band". I often wonder whether W & T are sort of like that, where there is a band of 100 or so where they will just make offers to, but it is the ones either side of the band where the interview is more important?

Dh has just brought up Valentine's Day, and whether I would like to go out for dinner somewhere. Have had to remind him gently that that is the day we get our letters, and I don't want a romantic evening to be spoilt! We'll be the middle aged couple staring into each others eyes on the 13th somewhere!

Does anyone know how the Cumnor/Elmhurst applicants are doing? Any surprises in terms of who is getting interviewed?

I will be interested to see how the Sutton selective test has changed the landscape. I see that Wilsons is now only putting 20% of the total mark on the first round next year. As boys were potentially knocked out of the running for 3 schools on one day doing a paper that none of them had seen before I think there were exceptions in both directions to be honest: bright boys who overthought the multiple choice papers, and boys from SATS factories who passed these, but might not manage the reasoning tests as well. It may of course produce no surprises at all!

ipreferletters · 26/01/2014 15:23

Alice, bananadrama, I saw T HM walking the room and talking to most parents, but nobody seemed to be taken to another room for a chat.

My DS did mention that (10+) T English was more difficult than KCS English, while T Math was easier than KCS Maths. The VR felt the same.

No point to speculate at this stage, let's enjoy the rain Sunday telly ...xxx

winniethepoor · 26/01/2014 15:50

For 11+, Trinity HM did arrange for individual meeting with parents when their son are having the interview. Mainly to answer questions the parents may have but no idea whether this relates to academic scholarship or not

Asterisk · 26/01/2014 16:57

Just wondering why someone don't just ask Mr Bish what the deal is with the interviews. Either he will be mysterious and vague or he might just explain how they do it and put an end to all the speculation. Anyone got the guts? Perhaps someone with kids already in the school and knows him -- Soupdragon looking at you?!

LadyMuck · 26/01/2014 17:10

Lol, that would be entertaining: "Dear Mr B, love the school, but it's just been on my mind: what happened in a 15 minute interview that made you want to pick ds1 and give him a scholarship? And do you think that you made the right decision?!" It would be useful to have the same answer from Whitgift too! Is Canon B v Mr B a clue either way?!

I'm fairly sure that at some point in the distant past I have in fact pretty much asked the question, to get a vague answer about they're trying to see what the boy would be like to teach in class. And I understand that they definitely won't want 24 boys who just sit staring at the wall and never opening their mouths (not indeed 24 boys who do not sit still or stop talking). I just wonder how they work out from a 1 to 1 what they'll be like to have in a class. I'd have thought that group interviews would be far more revealing!

MrsSteptoe I know that 'down' feeling too - hope you are feeling better soon.
bananadrama I am in the same situation as you are, hoping for an academic scholarship too.
Marni, Brownsugar3879, winniethepoor - thanks. I might consider meeting Mr B afterall!

Brownsugar3879 · 27/01/2014 08:29

LadyMuck Heard almost every Elmhurst boy has had an interview, mind you nearly 1/2 left last year @ 10+

Brownsugar3879 · 27/01/2014 08:29

Not sure about CHS
