i went to a school wiotha tuck box and all that crap
and it was blardy hell

fennel · 20/07/2006 13:41

yes, Chalet school in the early years before it got too rule bound. Would have been best friends with Jo, naturally.

Malory Towers over St Clares, definitely. open air pool and 4 towers to sleep in.

PrettyCandles · 20/07/2006 13:49

Oh no, not Jo - she was too good for words, so excessively popular and wonderfully reliable and perceptive. Yuck! Give me bitchy Grizel any day!

fennel · 20/07/2006 13:51

[grin}

Mary-lou was the totally irritating one I felt.

I have a lovely book "Chalet girls grow up". a cynical piss-take of their life in the real world. lots of sex and loss of faith and various bad behaviour all round. Mary-lou runs off with Len's husband.

PrettyCandles · 20/07/2006 13:53

Yeah, Mary-Lou took over from Jo, didn't she - bleurgh bleurgh bleurgh. Considerign that I despise two of the main characters, I just can't understand why I like the series so much!

doobydoo · 20/07/2006 13:53

Defo Chalet School and I would have been best friends with Jo and her family.People would not have been sure of me at first but i would rescue someone from a frozen lake and become the most popular girl in the school ever and new pupils would hear all about me and be amazed when i deigned to speak to them

fennel · 20/07/2006 13:55

oh b... (insert your favourite forbidden Chalet school slang word)

Chalet girls grow up

Tommy · 20/07/2006 13:58

definitely Malory Towers - I really wanted to go in that pool. And I would have been Darrell's best friend

PiccadillyCircus · 20/07/2006 14:01

I have that book, fennel. As long as you suspend any normal Chalet School belief, it is very good .

I would go to the Chalet School I think. And would probably be a really quiet wet sort.

Although maybe I would go to Kingscote with the Marlows. And be friends with Nicola, natch.

CaptainFlameSparrow · 20/07/2006 14:05

the malory towers pool did it for me too... if hogwarts had that pool, i'd be happy!

KTeePee · 20/07/2006 14:10

Chalet school for me too - my dd has started reading them now but sadly they are out of print so can only get them secondhand from Ebay

fennel · 20/07/2006 14:13

the Marlows books were great. but they didn't paint the school experience as quite as wonderful. they didn't even always like school and teachers were not always fair and lovely.

i have a large collection of chalet school and other school stories for my dds. rather for someone vehemently pro state education really.

LucyCampCat · 20/07/2006 14:16

My mum is a member of some Chalet School club where they find out of print copies of the books and forward them to you, they do a magazine and everything!

More of a Malory towers type gal meself, the sea water swimming pool, nasty Gwendoline and putting ink in people's plimsolls - bet she married a minor European Royal ahhh happy days.

PiccadillyCircus · 20/07/2006 15:01

GGBP are republishing all the Chalet School books (and also some at least of the Abbey books and Antonia Forest and other such authors).

Here .

There is a Chalet School Club called FOCS (Friends of the Chalet School) run by them as well.

Here .

zippitippitoes · 20/07/2006 15:03

are Clarissa Cridland and Anne Mackie-Hunter alumni then

DarrellRivers · 20/07/2006 15:16

what about Trebizon? anyone remember that.
They played tennis, it was by the sea and shockingly I think they did have boyfriends as they got older.
That said, my vote is still for Malory Towers.Spent all my childhood trying to have midnight feasts. and getting rumbled.

littleayla · 23/07/2006 13:45

Rydel High in Grease, that would be my school of choice.. tell me more

southeastastra · 23/07/2006 13:46

ooh yes littleayla especially with kenickie

zippitippitoes · 23/07/2006 13:51

who is kenickie..bizarrely I have a tshirt which I am wearing with that name emblazoned across the front..in the ten years or so I've had it i never registered it meant anything!!!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 23/07/2006 13:54

kenickie was one of the t-birds also a 90's britpop group!

Xena · 23/07/2006 13:54

Malory towers, st clares or the chalet school I read the whole lot used to dream about going

FrannyandZooey · 23/07/2006 14:03

Ooh not Malory Towers - I would have been the Gwendoline of the class - all that ruddy swimming and sport

I would have liked to go to Hogwarts, for sure, or in a more realistic vein, Kingscote School where the Marlow sisters attend in Antonia Forest's school stories.

littleayla · 24/07/2006 10:04

Didnt much rate Kenickie but would have loved all the cars, dresses, dancing, singing and sexual innuendo!!!!

fullmoonfiend · 24/07/2006 10:15

St Trinians for me! Deffo, especially when you get to be a sixth former and scoot around in teeny pinafores with fishnets and make gin
