Who is waiting for Primary School admission confirmation letters ?

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 13:13

I am. Nerve wracking stuff. The letters go out at the end of this month, according to the bloke I spoke to in admissions at my LEA.

Our choice of school is by no means guaranteed. We originally applied in late Jan (the closing date for applications was early Feb) for a school nearby (but not in catchment). Then we sold our house stc and had an offer accepted on another house in a different area (still in the same city though). Phoned the LEA and was told that I could ammend my application to the catchment school of the new house, which is a fab school, before exchange of contracts, but I still wouldn't be guaranteed a place. A) because it's over-subscribed anyway B) because my application would be a 'late application' and therefore would not be a priority and C) because we haven't actually got anything legally binding us to the address (although I included the memorandum of sale in with my change of application letter).

God knows what'll happen, ho-hum.

Poor you! I feel for you!

We're still waiting too. We are in catchment but they school is usually over subscribed. Don't think we're due our letter till mid April though! Hardly any fingernails left here!

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 13:36

It's a real unknown quantity

oh and I have no idea which other school I'd really like for dd :(

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 13:38

The 3 I have chosen for our new house are all good schools, in fact our 3rd choice on the new appliaction is our first choice on the original one we did before we sold

lucky you. I put one other school on because it's relatively good. Problem here is that most schools in our area are secular (? you know either CoE or RC) and dd isn't baptised... refuse to become hyppocrite and go to church just for school sake. I'm such a bad mum disadvantaging my children for my lack of believe... that's what I was told by someone! I nearly thumped them

lucykate · 20/03/2006 13:43

we've got exactly the same problems for our dd too. we're re-locating and the closing date in rutland was 31st jan. house we're buying happens to be in the catchment area of the best primary school and i've been told that all 40 places have already been offered. she will only get a place if someone else moves or goes private. there is another school nearby which is still within walking distance, and a 3rd but that would mean driving to take her as its further away.

just in case, she's got a place at the school where we are now as if it falls through again we could very well still be here come september.

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 13:43

Mrs BGD, I know what you mean.

fingers crossed for you lucykate. Things are moving along nicely with our sale/purchase (our buyer has had their survery done) and so hopefully we should be in and settled long before the start of the new school term.

NDP, we were supposed to hear two weeks ago, and we got a letter that said:

"I am writing to advise you that due to circumstances beyond our control we have been unable to process our admissions for the Nursey intake 2006-07. We are currently awaiting information from the Local Authority in relation to home school distances and will be dealing with the admissions as soon as we have this information, There is no indication as to when this will be available to us."

Needless to say I immediately freaked out via e-mail to the vicar. He's been calming my nerves for months now. Grin

Uwila · 20/03/2006 14:17

Then Friday (as you know from my other thread) we got a letter saying we were in...

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Sorry, really should calm down now...

MrsBigD · 20/03/2006 14:23

congrats Uwila :)

Uwila · 20/03/2006 14:58

Thanks, MrsD. Good luck to you.

hana · 20/03/2006 15:03

we find out tomorrow!

LunarSea · 20/03/2006 15:08

We had ours about 6 weeks ago, but then our closing date for applications here was the middle of SEPTEMBER!

yossa · 20/03/2006 15:12

we had to submit applications by end of Sep last year for sept this year! (Bedfordshire). May have been because it was the first year that it was via the LEA rather thandirect to the school. Only found out 2 weeks after deadline - went into breakdown mode but dh stalked the vicar who signedour form and found out 15 dec that ds1 goes tothe church school from sept.Fantastic news as it almost guarantees ds2 a place and they are in the process of building a brand new school building which opens in Sept. The old building is v old and on a main road so will be lovely even though a bit further from home. i must admit i did start taking him to sunday school to get him in but he is in now and we still go as he loves it somuch. don't feel like such a hypocrite now Blush

Panyanpickle77 · 21/03/2006 08:53

My dd has not got her requested place at the nearest (oversubscribed, A,A,A, Excellent Ofsted report) schoolAngry. I am a bit peeved about it because my next door neighbours kids go there and had no problem getting in, and a friend has a dd there and they live more than a mile away from my house (1.5miles from the school, sourgrapes but I think justifiable so!). The LEA have offered dd a place at the local failing school (it got average and poor in its ofsted, and all E's for test results!). I feel an APPEAL coming on !!!Grin

Uwila · 21/03/2006 08:56

Deffo Appeal. But, you probably need a backup plan too. Are you going to go to the failing school if that'all they offer? Is private an option? What about homeschool?

jambuttie · 21/03/2006 09:06

we are like this too, still not sure when we will recieve the letter either.

we have asked that he get allowed into a school outwith our catchment area

spursmum · 21/03/2006 09:13

I got my ds' letter in February as had to apply by November (herts).
Got the place I wanted at the school being built next door(literally!!) I would have been fuming if he didn't get in there as I can throw him out of the window onto school grounds!!

foxinsocks · 21/03/2006 09:29

We got ours this morning (richmond upon thames LEA). We have an older sibling at the school but there's still a sense of relief when you finally get the letter in your hand! I'm also relieved that I won't have to do this again now till secondary school.

foxinsocks · 21/03/2006 09:29

a reception place I should have said

LIZS · 21/03/2006 09:30

Mrsaek obviously you can appeal but bear in mind it may have been one of those higher application years overall (friend has been told demand for Reception places this year is higher than last for example) so there may simply have been more children who more specifically met the criteria ahead of your dd. If it had been another year she may have got in without a problem. What has happened to your neighbours and friends may simply not be relevant to your case.

foxinsocks · 21/03/2006 09:38

Mrsaek, it's worth asking to be put on the waiting list and then finding out your position (they normally put you in order of the admission criteria) - if you are fairly close to the school, then you will probably be fairly near the top of the waiting list. I don't know where you are, but round here (greater london) there's always a fair bit of movement on the waiting list.

Uwila · 21/03/2006 09:39

Congratulations, Fox. Grin

foxinsocks · 21/03/2006 09:41

thanks uwila

you did very well getting into that school! I take my hat off to you!
