Who is waiting for Primary School admission confirmation letters ?

NomDePlume · 20/03/2006 13:13

I am. Nerve wracking stuff. The letters go out at the end of this month, according to the bloke I spoke to in admissions at my LEA.

Our choice of school is by no means guaranteed. We originally applied in late Jan (the closing date for applications was early Feb) for a school nearby (but not in catchment). Then we sold our house stc and had an offer accepted on another house in a different area (still in the same city though). Phoned the LEA and was told that I could ammend my application to the catchment school of the new house, which is a fab school, before exchange of contracts, but I still wouldn't be guaranteed a place. A) because it's over-subscribed anyway B) because my application would be a 'late application' and therefore would not be a priority and C) because we haven't actually got anything legally binding us to the address (although I included the memorandum of sale in with my change of application letter).

God knows what'll happen, ho-hum.

Foxinsocks can I ask where? (Am being nosey as am in same borough and also got our letter today).
Dd got a place for reception in 1st choice, but I would have been surprised if she didn't as we live very close.

Sparklemagic · 21/03/2006 10:41

thinking of all you guys who are still waiting, hope you all get what you want!!

In our area the application deadline was November so I got our letter weeks ago, it's a lovely feeling getting the school you want - and to know that our DS is settled on a 'path' for the next few years....

Snips · 21/03/2006 10:53

Just to those of you who may not get into preferred school-definitely go onto waiting list. DS1 started reception last year in our third choice. I was really depressed about it, and thought we would have to move. I was advised to stay put and see how the waiting list went. We were about 14th on waiting list for our second choice (which would have been our first but we thought we didn't have too much chance of getting in), and we were called about 5 weeks into term. He joined end Oct 05 and is very happy there. Hopefully you will all get preferred school, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

just called our LEA as I read on the website that the forms should be submitted to school, but we sent it direct. So was panicking... no issue though. phew. And she didn't understand what I was on about at first and was wondering whether I was talking about the reply slip. So hoping I'll be getting the letter in the next few days. But then again it is part of the council Grin

I am going to will dd into her school if I have to.

Panyanpickle77 · 21/03/2006 13:02

my dd isnt 5 till June 07, so a friend recommends that I keep her at home until the term b4 her 5th birthday (which is legal, and within my parental rights). I can then deal with the school directly. After speaking to a very patronising "girl" (she sounded about 14!) at Birmingham Lea, i think this may be my best bet. I will appeal as well though, as my dd has had a very tough year, with lots of confusing and changing things.

iota · 21/03/2006 13:08

our letters came out in the first week of March Smile

dangirl · 21/03/2006 13:17

We won't be told till May - VERY late!

LIZS · 21/03/2006 13:35

Mrsaek you could legally actually keep her home until the term after she is 5, ie September 2007 , but she'd then go into year 1. Think you need to consider what happens if a place doesn't come up by then and also what you would do in the meantime. Her friends may well move on from any playgroups/preschool ahead of her. Also if you decide to wait for a space (which you could do ) will the school make a special effort to integrate her into an established class group.

hana · 21/03/2006 13:49

bummer
we got out second choice
ah well.....onto the waiting list for us I guess

number 2 still a good school but not our fave

GDG · 21/03/2006 14:12

Waiting to hear about nursery. Have heard on mummy grapevine that very oversubscribed this year, even in catchment, so I'm a bit scared. Not really because I'm desperate for him to go to nursery as he can stay where he is, but if it's oversubscribed now then it will be for reception the following year.

The LEA now does our admissions and siblings do not take priority. I'd like to know how they'd suggest I get ds1 to one school for 8.50am and ds2 to another school for 8.50am with ds3 in tow as well if he doesn't get in.

However, not worrying toooo much as yet - even if oversubscribed in catchment and we don't initially get a place, I'm sure we'd have one by the time September came round as people often get offers they don't take up or they move etc. Quite a few in ds1's class didn't get places till July and August after other people made other choices.

iota · 21/03/2006 14:14

reallly bizarre not to give siblings priority IMHO. our local LEA does

GDG · 21/03/2006 18:33

I know Iota - just came in this year - veeery annoying. It's a totally logical priority!

sparklymieow · 21/03/2006 18:37

recieved dd2's back in january. She got into the same school as DS and DD1 :)

Orinoco · 21/03/2006 21:41

We're going to have this worry next year.

The school that we want dd2 to go to only takes 8 children a year. There are 3 in catchment, and 5 siblings out of catchment (including dd2). So I'm just hoping no one else moves into the village in the next year!

Roobie · 21/03/2006 22:00

In Kent we don't hear until 6 May (having applied by early Feb). We're hoping to get dd into the RC primary 2 mins walk away. We are practising RCs but there is still the uncertainty ....

kid · 21/03/2006 22:02

I was expecting DS's at the beginning of March. Haven't given it much thought really as I am just assuming he will get a place. If not, I will be appealing as I have only put him down for one school.

PeachyClair · 21/03/2006 22:31

It's slightly different here, the school is so excellent we fight most of Newport (which is a lot of kids!)- small endowed school- but the school was set up with automatic places for a small set of houses that were there in 1749 (?). Ours is one, so alhough we moved here June they ahd to find us a place. Whether DS3 gets in depends purely on whether our house tenancy is extended in December. I ahev no idea what we will do if it isn't- don't even want to think about it!

tomal · 21/03/2006 23:02

Hi Peachyclair, just saw your message. Is it Caerleon Endowed school that your children attend? I've heard that it's got a very good reputation.

PeachyClair · 21/03/2006 23:37

Yes- are you local????

PeachyClair · 21/03/2006 23:48

(And yes, for the vast majority it is excellent but the SN thing is a bit of a learning curve and there may be bully issues for ds1 as a result but on the whole for an NT kid I would recommend a thousand times over- ds2 adores the place)
