Baka, I agree that sometimes the uneven profile foxes all sorts of people, including teachers. But I do think that lots of dyspraxic kids do have great gifts and unusual intelligence in certain areas, and totally agree they need help to express that in a way that the school can recognise. Part of that is to realise that if reading, say, is a strength, or writing poetry, then it matters that they are given a chance to shine. For those kids it really does matter that that they aren't given a dull, far-too-easy book and told that that's all they deserve, or that unless their handwriting is OK, their creative efforts don't count. We all like to feel understood and to show our talents. And we all wilt a bit if that doesn't happen.
of course, I absolutely agree about thinking outside the box. Just as I think that children with autism should be allowed a biscuit at snack time

Thanks for this dig, Cod, made me feel great. I just asked for advice on here - other posters have posted about their bright children and haven't had shit thrown at them.

If it helps you feel better, DD1 might be very very bright, but she's also phenomenally shy, has difficulty making friends and very very clumsy. And English is not her first language. So she is not a star in every sense of the word. I'm sorry I didn't make this clear from my earlier post.

I know you have a huge crowd of fans around you, but if all you can do is snipe at people, I'd personally rather you didn't post. What was the Mumsnet philosophy again? Or doesn't it apply to you?

so, aloha, if all kids need a chance to shine, why is sports day such a non-event in schools?

dd1 is a super fast runner and won her race at sports day but there was no fuss, no badge, no reward, nothing. She isn't at the top of the class in anything (well she has lovely handwriting ) and that would have been such a special time for her to be celebrated.

teacher told me 5 yr old dd is currently at the bottom of her class. my fault? or her's (teacher)?

ah enid, that really sad.

My ds2 is unlikely ever to get his main talent and enthusiasm singled out at his school, too. He is mad about the army, loves looking at military history picture books, plays endless pretend games (bunker making, ammunition and gun gathering etc) rounds up unknown children in playgrounds and recruits them to his battalion, nominates a captain not himself, shares out his army toys with everyone ... with the LEA policy of banning pretend gun play at schools and playclubs this must go down like a lead balloon.

lol tigermoth - excellent strategy skills then!

Sports day is really big here, Enid. Sam can't yet read or write, so despite being v v bright can't demonstrate it, IYSWIM. But at sports.... wow! He's only a small mite, yet he outran / jumped all and won EVERY race! [grn] DH was peeing himself with laughter as I got all excited, but then after all the challenges Sam has, why on earth not? We were told he has extreme potential in football and gymnastics also, unfortunately he hates football and they don't do gym yet. I think it's the athletics he'll do best at though; hubby used to run for county. Nobody seems to care about sporting prowess outside sports day though, not even mentioned in class . Shame- if he went to a public school I suspect he'd be popular, although was brought up near Milfield so might be an extreme example!

Don't take this the wrong way, Spidermama, as it's absolutely not a criticism, but am surprised to find out that your are an elitist
