expat - you were suspended for smoking? I got a detention (because the games teacher deliberately ignored the cigarette - we were ostensibly pounished for skipping games).

how lucky i was.

SenoraPostrophe · 14/11/2005 22:40

so what was the solicitous material you were propogating?

Kathlean · 14/11/2005 22:43

paolo you are so wicked to your children making them read The Times!! What's wrong with the Sun at least there are better pictures.

DS is appauling at writing, colouring, doing his buttons and tie and always put his shoes on the wrong feet.

What is wrong with saying he is good at reading?

I don't think that's true really, sn.

if your child is above the level of the class it is rather less of a worry than if they were below though isn't it?

ds1 got suspended for fighting last year.
dd suspended for hospitalising a boy at school
ds2 is on mars.

ds1 will not pass one gcse becuase hes lazy and thinks the lable "chav" is a good thing.
ds2 wont pass a gcse becuse he's on mars. unfortunatley our education system doesn't cater for children on other planets.

my dd wants to be a doctor. but is struggling with the juggle between that and having the right hair do for school.

ds1 is lazy
ds2 is strange
dd is average.

so imagine my overwhelming joy - tears n all i shit you not when ds1 got a "c" for coursework gcse maths.

have i failed?
no.
could i have done better?
yes.
can i live with myself?
yes.

i agree with cod Im afraid. Just because a child is reading a book beneath their level for 5-10 mins a day isnt going to hamper their development. They do have many other hours in which to practice their advanced reading at home or other times at school.

Its a bit like going in for the cycling proficiency test when the kids are already riding round the neighbourhood for hours on end.

paolosgirl · 14/11/2005 23:01

As long as my kids are happy, not being bullied, not bullying anyone else and not struggling with the lessons, I couldn't give a flying f*ck what set they are in.

SenoraPostrophe · 14/11/2005 23:02

great post, custy.

skinnycow · 14/11/2005 23:05

i always found that the first time school mums (eldest kid) were the worst for wanting their kid to race through the stages. My friend and I used to go and listen to the children in year 2 read every Friday and every week one girl Charlie used to tell us that her mum wanted her on the next stage that day. She was most pissed when we pointed out she still have X amount of books to read. In fact we used to speak to the class teacher about it and he agreed she couldnt yet demonstrate to his satisfaction that she was able to move on.

Ds is in the top set for his class (yr 3) and is very bright. DD1 (yr 1) is in the bottom set and struggling, there is talk of SN schooling for her

Blandmum · 15/11/2005 07:11

dd is at the top, or near the top in all subjects. She is 8 with a reading age of 14....and all her own work, no hothousing here.

ds is at the bottom of his class by a long way. He is about 4 reading levels behind all the rest of the class. I went to a PT meeting yesterday. Teacher told me that son is totaly fab (knew that anyway) and is making real progress. So who gives a stuff where he is (or his sister for that matter),he is woring hard , making progress and is a nice kid. And that is what really matters.

As I have posted many, many times before, as a teacher and a mum, I'd take nice over bright anyday. Nice is more important.

every child's abilities, in whatever area should be valued. And imporovemnet, at whatever level, should be celebrated

piffle · 15/11/2005 08:00

Ha!
Well I have one dd with special needs whom I post about with alarming regularity, no one has ever said of ffs piffle we KNOW she is delayed keep it to yourself
I also have and will post whenever reasonable about my ds who is absurdly clever
Because I am proud of him, because it presents it's own set of problems (bullying he had his arm broken etc) schooling for gifted children.
This is mumsnet, I'm a mother and I will talk about them for as long as I effing well like
Boring from the fish who tried to big up JP'ing as well

Nightynight · 15/11/2005 08:10

the parents on the other thread have quite legitimate concerns about their children being bored.

my dd1 is near the bottom of her class. I know shes bright, and I think shell be successful in the long run though. ds1 and 2 are rather better, but still nowhere near reading Harry Potter aged 5.

If you teach your child to read at 2 and a half (as my mother did), it has no bearing on the child's future success in life. It just proves that you had time on your hands when your child was 2 and a half.

Ds (6) is top of his class by a long way. Of course I am proud of this, but I am even more proud of the fact that at the tender age of six, at the beginning of his second year at school he has already started an activity at school which has had to be banned

He is an avid paper aeroplane maker, and had become the ringleader in the school for paper plane making! The Head had to ban it because it was using too much paper and littering the playground. Must add that my ds wasn't littering personally as my little angel would never do something as naughty as that
