Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

No, she can't go there because although she passed, there were too many applicants for the number of places, and others scored higher than her, so she is on the waiting list, but there will be loads above her on the list, so virtually no hope.

kitchensync · 03/03/2011 14:48

can you ask how many are above her on the list ?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/03/2011 15:12

Well done to your dd gorgeous :)

CrosswordAddict · 03/03/2011 16:13

GorgeousX Pleased for you and your daughter.

lazarusb · 03/03/2011 16:27

Congrats to your dd GorgeousX. This time of year is so stressful....and just think....UNIVERSITY in 7 years! Grin

I am just being nosy really as my DS got a place in the school of his choice and this is about a friend but I would like to ask a question from those of you who know about appeals.

My friend wants to appeal her DD's allocation on the basis that the school that has been allocated don't use the LEA Music Service. She has been allocated the same school as my DS and I know that they do provide instrument lessons and have a full range of extra curricular music activities but just not provided by the LEA. She doesn't realise this and thinks her DD will have to give up lessons which she enjoys, and playing in the local youth orchestra. I am a bit shocked that she doesn't know this since she has been allocated the catchment school and has visited it but they had their minds set against it even before the visit, hence the clutching at straws to get a place in one of their choices.

Anyway, would I be right in thinking that this isn't a good enough reason for appeal, even if one of the schools they want to appeal to is a specialist performing arts school (ie a normal comp but with performing arts as a specialism)? The child isn't G&T in music or anything, just enjoys playing.

As I say, I am just being nosy as I am keeping well out of it.Smile

drosophila · 03/03/2011 17:58

Gorgeous What kind of results do you need for Tiffin. Just being nosy.

DS got his first choice so we are very happy.

GORGEOUSX · 03/03/2011 18:02

Hi - Thanks to everyone again. Drosophyla The lowest offer was 235. Smile

mamatomany · 03/03/2011 19:02

Anyone had some really shocking results locally ? Children working at 5b have failed the 11+ and people I really did not think would pass at all seem to have done very well, it's all very strange Confused

curlymama · 03/03/2011 19:09

235 got an offer!? I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse about ds's 331! Confused Grin

CointreauVersial · 03/03/2011 19:10

Round here, we have two senior schools; the big shock has been the swing from the "big, high performing, over-subscribed" school to the "small, traditionally the underdog, but massively improved" one.

People have been caught out on both sides - not bothering to apply to the first one, expecting to be out of catchment, or compacently expecting to get into the second one, because it always had space in the past.

GORGEOUSX · 03/03/2011 19:20

curlymama The highest possible mark was 280. It was 235 out of 280 at a school that is ranked about 10th in the entire country. So different, tests, different scores, but your DS is obviously GS material to have come that close. Smile

curlymama · 03/03/2011 19:40

Ah ok, Gorgeous, i assumed all the tests went by the same system. I don't know why, it's obvious really! Brain is a bit messy atm with all the appeal info trying to find space!

Thankyou for your kind comment about my ds, you are so right! Wink Grin

GORGEOUSX · 03/03/2011 20:04

LOL! Curlymama I wish you lots of luck with your appeal - have you got all the info you need for a non-qualification appeal?

GORGEOUSX · 03/03/2011 20:05

Curlymama I have sent you a PM Smile

idlingabout · 03/03/2011 20:42

jynxed did your letter arrive - ours came to-day. The e-mail never materialised but we found a way in on the online system last night even though it still said in red letters that it wasnt updated we noticed offered in the top right corner - clicked on something and found where we could accept the offer (despite the offer not yet received iyswim). We got our first choice - not that there is much choice for those of us who dont go to church.
Hope you got your first choice.

Dozer · 03/03/2011 21:36

Wow, gorgeous, good for your dd! Sorry about the nonsuch test though, is never simple is it!

foxinsocks · 03/03/2011 21:47

I never got the letter (though did get the email) ffs!

Do the letters contain any more information? I accepted online anyway...

GORGEOUSX · 03/03/2011 21:59

Thanks Dozer Smile

Foxinsocks The letter from our LEA just told us that we would automatically go on the waiting list for our first preference school, but all the LEAs operate differently.

If I remember correctly you got your first choice didn't you? If so you won't need that info anyway, or info about how to appeal. As you've accepted the offer it should all be fine, though it's totally unacceptable that it's now 3rd March and you still haven't received letter Shock

foxinsocks · 03/03/2011 22:17

Congrats to your dd Georgeoux - though sorry you may not get them into school together. That sounds like a pain. Do you think you have any chance of Nonsuch putting her up the list because of the sibling connection?

curlymama · 03/03/2011 22:34

Thanks Gorgeous. Pm'd you back Smile

brioqueen · 03/03/2011 22:44

Hi, has anyone else been trying to accept a school place via the Bucks school acceptance email address?
I've been trying on & off for around 36 hours now and just keep getting the message 'server not found'. I've been online with work, yahoo, google etc all day. Excuse my ignorance but is it my PC or is it 'them' (as they will now be forever known). Hope this isn't an embarassingly dopey question....

Jynxed · 03/03/2011 22:54

Idling - Yes, finally got the letter when got home from work today. I let DS open it (I was too nervous!) and initially we though we had got our last choice, as he read out the school printed in bold, which on closer reading was the statement of catchment school.

Actually we had been allocated our first choice, which is not in our catchment area, but which older DD goes to (just started this year after 2 years on waiting list) so we got in on the sibling rule.

DS complained for the next hour that I screamed loudly right in his ear as I read over his shoulder and he was deafened for the next hour.

I just can't stop smiling!!! Particularly as we have DC3 going through the same thing next year, so she should be almost certain of a place with 2 siblings at the school.

Well done you getting round the totally crap system. Wish you had posted that tip last night! I share your pain on the church schools, we are similarly limited. Best local schools are the religious ones, but that is the one thing I couldn't stomach even for my kids sake.

Which bit of W Sussex are you in?

starchilli · 04/03/2011 06:32

Re children failing the 11+ but getting good SATs score, my 11 year old has consistently worked at level 6a and has now got 7c and is doing GCSE work in Maths at her school yet didn't score highly enough to get in to grammar school.

It makes no sense at all.

curlymama · 04/03/2011 08:16

I feel your pain starchilli! Are you going to appeal? You have a good case for it if your dd gets results like that at SAT's.
