Rules...... Being broken.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 13:52

I was just reading the thread about parents sneaking pop/juice into water bottles and this got me thinking about how many other rules are broken.

For example :
in a school where uniform is compulsory skirt, no headwear etc why are muslim girls allowed to wear trousers and head scarves, instead of shorts for P.E. tracksuits.

Why do our kids have to suffer having their "traditional" foods changed to suit the needs of muslims?

Sorry this gets my goat and I am married to a muslim man..... I have this discussion all the time with him.... he is beginning to see my point now.

church schools have an obligation to admit a certain number of people of other faiths I believe

sparlover · 15/09/2005 18:48

trip trap.... it isn't worth it

sparlover · 15/09/2005 18:48

yeeeees... ok...

i still have NO idea what you're talking about. but never mind eh

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:49

Soup,
there are plenty of schools which are not church schools which they could attend. And if they do insist on going to Church schools they should at the very least ask the school about headscarves in either the school colours or with the badge on, that way it would be part of the uniform.

AND, I should add, I wished my school had had a shalwar kameez option when I was a teenager, it would have covered my fat knees rather better than a school skirt did!

Everyone broke the uniform rules at my school - maybe that's why we were at the top of the Oxbridge lists, because we were encouraged to be individuals.

sparlover · 15/09/2005 18:49

how come your sister hasn't posted anything then?

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:51

Spar because right now she is putting her 2 young sons to bed. Is there a clocking in place then? does she have to do a certain number of hours on here by your rules?

Oh and by the way she only joined today.

sparlover · 15/09/2005 18:52

fancy that

Nightynight · 15/09/2005 18:52

Why do some people get so worked up when they think other people are breaking the rules?
I usually stick to rules cos I dont like getting ticked off by cod and her ilk, but who cares what other people do as long as theyre hurting nobody?

sparlover · 15/09/2005 18:53

lol at being ticked off by cod!

Nightynight · 15/09/2005 18:53

well you know what i mean

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:54

Nightynight,
I just don't see the fairness of non muslim girls not being allowed to wear anything but the school hat and not in class but the muslim girls can wear any coloured scarves they chose to and obviously all the time. if the scarves were in the school colours, or had the badge on then yes you could genuinely say they had the correct uniform on.

OP posts:
Nightynight · 15/09/2005 18:55

lil
I dont know any schools that have a school hat, and I cant think that any school that allowed headscarves for one religion would be allowed by law to ban them for another religion.

do you know any non-muslim girls who have asked to wear a headscarf and been refused?

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:55

Spar
fancy what? the fact that my sister is outting her sons to bed... well the 21 month old likes to be tucked in as does the 5 yr old by their mummy. How terrible of them eh?

OP posts:
Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:57

Nightynight yes i do actually in my sons school the only hats allowed to be worn are the school hats, wool for the winter and baseball caps for the summer. If mars is on tonight she may be able to tell you the same. If the children do not wear these hats they are not allowed to wear any hat.

OP posts:
Nightynight · 15/09/2005 18:58

but they are allowed to wear headscarves presumably, whether they are muslim or not?

I still dont see the issue. Headscarves in any colour or school hats are allowed. Whats the big deal?

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 18:59

only the muslims are allowed to wear headscarves not the non muslims. They have to wear the school hats.

OP posts:
Nightynight · 15/09/2005 19:00

Have any non-muslim girls asked if they can wear headscarves?

Nightynight · 15/09/2005 19:02

Incidentally, orthodox jews cover their heads, and so do plymouth brethren, am I right?

steffee · 15/09/2005 19:04

I'm fairly sure that it is illegal to make school uniform compulsory, something to do with every child having a right to an education etc, and the school brochures even say that the uniform is not compulsory but they would like it to be adhered too.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 19:14

Steffee,
In ds's school uniform is compulsory. There is no leeway on it. From nursery up they have to wear uniform.

beckybrastraps · 15/09/2005 19:21

Does it really specify in the dress code that only muslims are allowed to wear a headscarf? How do they check?

SoupDragon · 15/09/2005 19:28

Are you really so petty as to object that these girls are following their religious dress code? It's not just a fashion whim is it? Which is exactly what it would be for anyone to wear one without it being a religious "necessity".

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 19:28

Becky,

When the childrens parents apply to the school for a place, they have to state their religion. So the school knows who is and who isn't a muslim.
I have nothing against any race or religion........ My husband is a muslim but even he agrees it would be better if they had scarves in the school colours. He also agrees with me over the removal from school on days when there are services in church etc. They should remain behind and continue with some work.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 19:29

Soup,
it is not petty but a uniform is a uniform. If the parents are determined their children have to wear the scarves then surely they could invest in having one with the school badge on.
