Rules...... Being broken.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 13:52

I was just reading the thread about parents sneaking pop/juice into water bottles and this got me thinking about how many other rules are broken.

For example :
in a school where uniform is compulsory skirt, no headwear etc why are muslim girls allowed to wear trousers and head scarves, instead of shorts for P.E. tracksuits.

Why do our kids have to suffer having their "traditional" foods changed to suit the needs of muslims?

Sorry this gets my goat and I am married to a muslim man..... I have this discussion all the time with him.... he is beginning to see my point now.

Are you trying to be incendiary lilsis?

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 14:07

spacedonkey,
No i am saying how unfair it is that our kids have to wear correct uniform but the rules are bent for others.

How is it hurting you or your kids if a girl is wearing a headscarf?

I think you need to chill

It is their religion........end of story, there would be an uproar if the government tried to put a stop to it.

WigWamBam · 15/09/2005 14:09

The rules aren't bent; "correct" uniform for a Muslim child includes their traditional dress because it's a fundamental part of their religion.

As for the food thing, I can't say I've noticed our kids having to suffer having their traditional foods to suit the needs of Muslims ... the Muslims at dd's old nursery ate the turkey twizzlers and smiley faces just like the non-Muslim children.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 14:09

Space,
if the rules are no headwear in class then it should be the same for all not just some. If parents cannot stick to the rules then they should send their children to a school where uniform is not worn.

How about they all wear headscarfs, no rules will be broken then.........get over it.

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 14:11

Sorry i typed the word muslim in about food by accident. But if you think about it pork is not on the menu in majority of schools anymore because muslim children cannot eat it.

Sd, it's not hurting other parents or children if kids have coke in there water bottles, but the thread about that is 200 messages long!

Lilsis1975 · 15/09/2005 14:12

how about they get sent to a school where uniform isn't worn? then no rules to be broken. A uniform in most schools does not include a headscarf.

colditz · 15/09/2005 14:12

No one has said "get over it" about the water bottles though, and that is even pettier!

starlover · 15/09/2005 14:12

round here you don't even get school dinners, so think yourself lucky!

spacedonkey · 15/09/2005 14:13

I still don't see why it matters

As for parents putting coke in their kids' water bottles - that's just idiotic

waterfalls · 15/09/2005 14:13

That other thread was about rule breaking though, this one as far as I can see is not.

starlover · 15/09/2005 14:13

or how about we all learn a little tolerance. then the world would be abetter place

Twiglett · 15/09/2005 14:14

colditz .. I disagree .. it does hurt other parents and kids if one child takes coke in instead of water .. it then becomes an 'its not fair he can' whine rather than a 'because that's the school rules'

colditz · 15/09/2005 14:14

Not many people will be tolerant to kids who don't like water.... mutter, mutter....

WigWamBam · 15/09/2005 14:15

Pork's on the menu around here, in the form of roast dinners and sausages - if the Muslims don't like it, they have the vegetarian option. No pandering to anyone then.

And as Lilsis is just after a scrap, I'm leaving this thread to go and do something far more worthwhile.

colditz · 15/09/2005 14:15

But the same will happen with head wear, won't it? 2Why can't I wear my hat, so and so wears a head skarf!

you could go into religion with a 5 year old, but I suspect it would be a waste of breath...

colditz · 15/09/2005 14:17

(By the way, I fully support the right to wear religious stuff, crosses, headscarve, etc.... just playing devil's advocate)

Twiglett · 15/09/2005 14:18

no religious differences are easily explained and understood even by a 4 year old

spidermama · 15/09/2005 14:20

There's an easy way to solve this problem ...

School uniform should be scrapped altogether. It's de-humanising and anti-individual.

starlover · 15/09/2005 14:21

i like school uniform

if you wear a uniform you can't be bullied for not having the "right" clothes

Twiglett · 15/09/2005 14:21

school uniform is fab and inclusive and helps remove social boundaries and give a sense of belonging

can we move this discussion on to a less explicitly racist thread please?
