Anyone else suffering from the jitters? DD has been for a couple of days now and now me. Coping strategies welcome. Grin

dd got 2 A*, 2As, 4Bs & 3Cs Smile

She has a career average of less then 85% due to medical issues so I'm pretty pleased.

cleverlyconcealed · 24/08/2010 11:56

85% attendance. [over excited]

Well done to everyone's dcs.

Remotew · 24/08/2010 12:03

Hi thought I should post seeing as I started the thread. Well DD got 6xA*s 4xA's 2 1/2xB's and a C!!

So all in all good results, she is a little disappointed as one of the B's was in maths, we need to find out how much off an A she was, she didn't finish the first paper, to decide with school whether it's worth her doing it at AS level. Bearing in mind she needs an all A's at A level. Can it be done I wonder? Anyone got any advice about this as we are prepared to pay for a tutor if necessary. She wants to go into medicine so no pressure there. Grin Will add that we both agree she didn't revise hard enough.

Ds2 got A* in maths was not oberley worried as was an early exam so had time to omproove if needed .though lol not quite sure what's he's going to do next year now as can't improove on it

But I'm most proud of ds1 he got 3c and 2 b and he really struggled through school as was labelled slow and thick because of his dyspraxia and dyslexic he said today that he love to go wave results under teachers that told him would never get there

si while not knocking ds2 results he done well but is academic but were going out to celerbrate ds1 because he has worked so hard for his
and to celerbrate that he got his collage course based on interviews and a pratical interview as well

Well done everyone else dc

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 24/08/2010 12:14

My cousin just achieved 9A's and an A. So proud of all these hard working young people. THE EXAMS ARE NOT GETTING EASIER!!

JaneS · 24/08/2010 12:22

Wow, so many good results! Well done everybody's DC.

Vivian, I think todays A are just as valid as they were in your day. You may be reading it as lots of pupils getting all A and A but I have been down to a school with good results this morning and I can assure you that this isn't the case.

My son managed 3 A's, 9A's and 3B's He is very pleased with himself and I'm very pleased for him! I think he's the most chuffed that one of his A's is in Physics and he's not even doing that in the 6th form!

JaneS · 24/08/2010 12:39

Viv, if you read the Telegraph thread that's been linked to, you'll see it's only (IIRC) Kent and somewhere else that asked for 6A grades. Someone posted an explanation from Cambridge saying that they wouldn't discourage people from applying who didn't have straight A grades because they looked at other things as well, especially the potential to do well.

(Possibly my last 'stop talking scaremongering bollocks about everywhere demanding 6A*s' post? Hmm)

spanieleyes · 24/08/2010 12:43

7A's not 9! ( Still not bad though!)

cleverlyconcealed · 24/08/2010 12:49

Don't stop repeating it LRD Grin

How much longer can the pass rate keep going up? At this rate it'll be 102% by the time my DD does GCSEs in 2016! They'll be giving them out to people who didn't even sit the papers!

roundthebend4 · 24/08/2010 13:04

That's not true ds1 worked really hard for those results
even ds2 had to work fir his yes he got A* but he only took maths early because swear he can get numbers to do somesaults if he wanted

But please don't say there getting easier what you forgetting is that with computers and Internet dc have better tools for revising as well

Lilymaid · 24/08/2010 13:05

Looking at that Telegraph piece on GCSE requirements, it would appear to be a complete non-story. It quotes:

"Imperial College London?s faculty of medicine said applicants needed three As and two Bs in GCSE biology, chemistry, English language, mathematics and physics.

Sheffield University?s medical school said students needed six As in GCSEs, while Kent said students needed five passes at C or above, including English, for all its courses.

The science facility at St Andrews said students needed the equivalent of B grades in English and maths.

Warwick said all applicants needed a C or above in GCSE English language, as well as maths or a science subject, although many courses demanded grades ?above this university minimum?.

Leeds said students applying for dentistry needed six GCSEs, including Cs in English, maths, chemistry and biology."

Did they just pull this information off the websites? None are specifying terrifically high grades - even the grades for medicine are As rather than A*s. Complete non-story.

Remotew · 24/08/2010 13:06

Not a fair comment UQD! I won't say that my DD worked really hard to get her results as she took the revising in her stride. Maybe a day for each subject before each exam but she did well as she is naturally clever, to get A*s across the board she would have had to work extremely hard and will have to from now on.

I think threads like this are skewed somewhat toward DC's who are hoping to do very well, which is more stressful than for others who are more laid back about GCSE results.

I'm sure all the high achievers we have heard about today are in the top %.

TidyBush · 24/08/2010 13:08

Well done everyone's DCs. Just wanted to share mine too .

Well DD did better than she predicted and got 2 x A*, 2 x A, 5 x B and a Distinction in ICT.

Most importantly to her she got an A* in music so she's very pleased.

Remotew · 24/08/2010 13:10

Exactly Lily, I think you will find that Imperial College London requires 4A's at A level in 3 sciences and 1 other subject for medicine. Of course candidates applying will have higher than average GCSE results.
