After eldest son's disaster at A levels, youngest sons results can only be betterGrin.

Actually he's predicted all A's so getting a B will be a fate worse than death for him!

Remotew · 23/08/2010 15:12

How would you feel with a few B's instead of all A's, disappointed or not too bothered?

Eve - holding your hand.

There's no point in worrying yourself sick, and I'm sure your dd has done well.

I await ds's early gcse result with.... interest Confused.

Remotew · 23/08/2010 15:20

Thanks Monty, we got a couple of results last year but they way they do them now, 2 exams and course work per subject, they were about 30% of the final result.

I've been OK but I'm off work today and just started with the butterflies this afternoon so trying to keep calm. DD thinks she hasn't done very well so I'm trying to prepare myself whilst telling her it's OK if she gets less than expected.

Good luck for DS as well.

All this stuff about A* puts everyone on edge. B's are blardy GOOD!

Monty100 · 23/08/2010 15:24

Thanks Smile

xpost

Give dd a hug and tell her you know how hard she's worked.

mmmperuna · 23/08/2010 15:24

Offers round tea, wine and cake - I'm not there yet but we will be soon

Remotew · 23/08/2010 15:27

Thanks mmm, I have had some tea and cake, now wine, that's a good offer.

OP posts:
Monty100 · 23/08/2010 15:28

Wine? Par for the course Grin.

Eve - are you going with her to collect them??

Remotew · 23/08/2010 15:37

Yes, I'm working but have said I will be in late.

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 23/08/2010 15:38

Bs are not good if your child is clever. A*s are what is needed for a good univerity course.

Remotew · 23/08/2010 15:43

Mme, A* at GCSE or at A level? Was hoping there would be room for improvement in the next 2 years as far as Uni goes.

OP posts:
MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 23/08/2010 15:48

The thread is about GCSE.

Many good courses at good universities are not even looking at UCAS applications with fewer than 6 A* at GCSE.

cleverlyconcealed · 23/08/2010 15:49

Yes - bitjittery here eve.

Dd already has a C in Maths (her nemesis subject) and an A English Language. Still nervous about the rest though. Hoping for a couple more As

spanieleyes · 23/08/2010 15:50

I'm not bothered what he gets as long as it's enough to get him into the 6th form but only because that is what he wants to do. He needs 6A-C's and at least B's for his options so he should have no trouble but he sets himself very high standards and doesn't like to fall beneath them ( he has Aspergers and is as blunt with himself as he is with everyone elseSmile Even if he doesn't get what he wants I will only be disappointed FOR him, not WITH him!
Now his elder brother, I could cheerfully killAngry

In theory they have split the A grade into A and A*, in practice who knows!

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/08/2010 15:58

I don't think that A* is an old A - although don't know precise grade boundaries. So probably unlikely that a B now is an "old" C.

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/08/2010 16:00

I remember going into school in the afternoon on my own to get my gcse results. My mum and dad must have been getting ver nervous I think! I just didn't want to get them with other people there.

mrswoodentop · 23/08/2010 16:05

yes getting very jittery now

MmeRed I really hope that doesn't write off practically everyone from any future educational opportuneties otherwise we might as well stop here .I know quite a few off to good universities this year (RG and redbrick)who don't have strings of A at GCSE.i also know of several who have got in through clearing to decent courses,I do think there is an awful lot of scaremongering going on out there .I am certainly not going to say to my bright 16 year old tomorrow that any chance of a university place is dashed if he doesn't have 6 A s

dottyaboutstripes · 23/08/2010 16:05

My DD is predicted all A and A*....... v nervous here as I don't really think she'll achieve that. But I'm proud anyway, even if she does get dreaded B grades Wink

Remotew · 23/08/2010 16:08

Mme thanks for clarifying that. I've heard differing opinions on how much weight GCSE grade carry for UCAS. Also it stands to reason that if top marks aren't achieved at GCSE then they won't be at A level.

OP posts:
Remotew · 23/08/2010 16:10

X post, differing opinion again. I do hope it doesn't write them off for the top uni's if they don't get 6 A*s

mrswoodentop · 23/08/2010 16:11

The school that my ds attends have done a lot of statistical anlysis on such matters and infact many candidates especially boys do up there game significantly between GCSE and A level. Not saying that a string of Cs at GCSE will be good enough but the odd B is not a disaster
