It is a lovely dress but will need to be washed before wearing which defeats the point of buying new.

hmmm I personally would ask for a refund. cigarette smoke is very, very hard to get out and washing might not do it.

if you want to keep it I would still e-mail the seller and say you aren't pleased

Does the listing say non-smoking home?
Did you email and ask if it was a NS home?

If not hten I think it is ABU, this is why I am very careful to read listings - I managed to buy a used PS2 that stank so much it couldn't go in the room it was intended for as the whole room smelled, even after it was cleaned. However, the listing did not say NS so I didn't say anything - mind you that was before when the seller could also neg you!

I agree with NCbirdy if it didnt say in the listing that it was a smoke free house then i wouldnt say anything, if it said smoke free home in listing then i would email seller and wait for there response before leaving feedback.

hmm but if something is sold as new, then you would expect it to be in "new" condition, ie not stinking of smoke.

i do see what you mean though, and I would still mention it in feedback to warn other buyers.
not saying leave neg feedback. you could leave neutral because it's still disappointing and the buyer would have known that people wouldn't be happy, hence not mentioning it

I would mention it in a factual way 'lovely dress, but smells of cigarette smoke'.

I'd then bung it in the wash & accept that Ebay's a bit 'caveat emptor'.

Obviously if advertised as from NS household you'd be entitled to a refund...

I once won a purse off ebay that stank of smoke. It took months to get rid of the smell.

I'd have washed it anyway regardless of the smell of smoke.

Someone else has mentioned the cigarette smoke but it is only one feedback out of hundreds and twelve months ago.

I really really like the dress and only paid £20 for it which is about 1/5 of cost.

you could just send her an email mentioning that it smelt, maybe she doesn't realise.

No I didnlt which is a bit crap actually, have said lovely things about the dress though and the fact that I am very happy with the price.

They are not an individual seller selling bits from their wardrobe but a professional seller who advertises themselves as selling new products from their warehouse.

i don't think it is bad to leave neutral for that.

I know ebay is a buyers beware type of place, but you know, sellers should be HONEST about what they are selling.
if something is described as "new" then you expect it to be in new condition. not stinking osf smoke.
if you bought something from a shop online and it came smelling of smoke you'd send it back right? but on ebay you can't unless they specifically tell you otherwise???

Having taken time to read their feedback this has been an issue a few times, so it is something other buyers need warning about. The whole point of ebay feedback is to leave honest opinion and not to be bought off or hushed up.

but she would have probably appreciated being told before feedback was left. the feedback changes means that ebay's now a 'seller's beware' type of place not buyers.

well, if it was an issue a few times in the past according to feedback this obviously didn't put you off, so lets hope another neut won't put other potential buyers off.

Questions should be asked prior to bidding such as - is this from a smoke free/pet free/anything else that will prove to be the end of the world free environment?
Any problems should be dealt with prior to leaving feedback. - at least give them a chance to refund or send some washing powder before neuting them....

It didn;t put me off because I searched for negative or neutral feedback and there was only one which mentioned the smell of stale cigarettes. When I looked in more detail at the positive feedback some people had commented on their positive feedback that the clothes smelt.

Last week I ordered something that did not turn up I emailed them to explain before leaving negative feedback outlining what had gone wrong.

What would emailing the seller achieve? I want to keep the dress so do not want a refund. I think I paid a fair price so am not interested in money off.

Neutral feedback reflects that something has gone right and something has gone well. This is exactly what happened. Why give positive feedback for a service that was not positive. I stress this was not someone selling a few things on but a professional ebay shop. By leaving neutral feedback it may stop someone else unknowingly getting smelly clothes as their attention will be flagged up by the neutral feedback.

TSAP I think you have been unreasonable! It was only fair to give the seller the opportunity to resolve the problem (or just to offer to resolve/apologise if you want to keep the dress) before you made the decision to leave bad feedback. I'd also like to add you to my BBL!

If I had not seen the other feedback and this was not a huge professional seller I would of course have emailed them first and maybe I should have done. In my defence I have been using ebay for years and have in that time left two neutrals.

I have stressed all the positive in my feedback first.

it's not personal twinset but as a seller now if we get a neut or a neg we can only leave positive feedback or none at all.

sellers are feeling edgy at the changes.
