ANOTHER fricking item that stinks of smoke >:-(

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 19:32

I am so hacked off with this - just opened something else I bought in the week - reeks off smoke. This is the second time this week something has turned up minging. Worse this time as is a baby doll - yuk at idea of givng this to a child.

Am so fed up with selfish / unprofessional sellers who cannot send a clean item that doesn't stink. I specifically asked if the doll was clean and in good condition - jesus.

I have got SPD and getting to town is a real PITA - hence buying off the internet. Trolling around to the post office returning stuff that shouldn't have been sent out in this condition is RUDDY ANNOYING
and still have to find another doll into the bargain

Did it say it came from a smoke free home?

You can leave neg feedback. Why don't you contact the seller?

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 19:38

no it didn't but it didn#t say "this item is not covered in toxic waste" either

you really SHOULDN'T ghave to ask 'does this smell revolting'?

I will contact seller
but I won't get my money back until I have sent the fricking doll back

Well you could say that the item is not as described and they can collect if they want it back. I suppose though the law could be a bit wooly on whether something is unfit for purpose/ not what was ordered because it smells.

Well they didn't claim to be smoke free. A lesson learned? v annoying though for you

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 19:52

oh dear

on ebay ime if it doesn't say "smoke free home" then run! run for the hills!

because it WILL smell like an ashtray

I am assuming it is not a washable doll?

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 19:56

"you could say that the item is not as described and they can collect if they want it back"

you think they are going to refund if I do that? I don't think so

I don't agree that it is ok for an item to stink of smoke, unless it SAYS that it stinks of smoke

I could send stuff out filthy and say "well you never asked if it was CLEAN"

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 19:57

filly I don't know
it's in the other room in a bin bag while I stop retching

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:00

it's got a cloth body and plastic limbs and head etc
not the sort you can immerse in water

arse

Maybe they didnt realise it did. Smokers often can't smell that everything smells of smoke. Trying marking a set of 30 exercise books....

CarGirl · 01/06/2008 20:05

Problem is that smokers don't realise that they and their stuff stinks unfortunately.

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 20:06

oh but

a smoke laden doll at 8 months pg is not good on several levels

I remember once buying some maternity stuff of ebay and it STUNK, it was vile, and quite

hercules1 · 01/06/2008 20:07

Dh bought a car once that had been owned by a smoker. It was awful. We had it valeted twice but it was still awful. Fortunately the head casket blew so we lost a grand but still no smell.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:08

CarGirl I know they can't smell it
but you have to be pretty thick to not KNOW that you and all your belongings stink, if you smoke in your house

Filly well exactly
and I emailed her to ask if it was clean and all that
you don't sell children's stuff that stinks of smoke
this was going to be part of ds's present for when the baby is born
I've got him a sling and some cloth nappies too

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:09

yup the other thing I bought this week that stunk was a maternity skirt Filly
it's not good is it

OP posts:
CarGirl · 01/06/2008 20:10

I learned the hard way too, now if it doesn't state smoke free home I ask. Same at car boot sales when I see people smoking at their stand I usually walk on by. Smoke is grim grim grim.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:14

it really is revolting
the stale smell of it
[ex smoker emoticon]

Swedes · 01/06/2008 20:17

Franny
You know that little ask the seller a question box? ASK: Is this item from a smoke free home? If they say yes, it forms part of your contract for sale. If they say no, please don't buy the item.

CarGirl · 01/06/2008 20:18

even more hardened than me then, it make me wretch tbh

Fillyjonk · 01/06/2008 20:20

oh yes i do wonder if it is worse if you are an ex smoker

the dc got sling/cloth nappies when dd2 was born (we have LOTS of dolls, they are both bloody obsesed with babies, ds was distraught when he learnt that daddies don't bf ). it went down well.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:25

Swedes they are fkers though to sell stuff that stinks
you know I'm right
one time I emailed to complain and the bloke swore blind it could not be so as he didn't smoke
so I don't think there is a foolproof answer

Filly ds always says firmly "I am the mummy and you are the daddy"
(because mummies get to bf)

OP posts:
Swedes · 01/06/2008 20:28

Franny - I agree with you. But ask while it forms part of the contract - afterwards is too late.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:29

but the stuff should be clean
which includes smoke free
it's like selling an umbrella full of holes and not mentioning it
if there's a defect or fault or it is dirty or used you need to accurately describe its condition
stinking isn't exempt from this - I don't know how it has become acceptable that it is

OP posts:
Swedes · 01/06/2008 20:32

MY DS2 had a lovely little friend who used to come and play (they have moved now). Unfortunately his parents smoked and he completley reeked of smoke whenever he came. I tried not to let it put me off inviting him as he was a lovely kid and DS2 was very fond of him. The gov should do an anti smoking campaign based around the fact that smokers make their children stink too. I think it would hurt them more than their arteries being a bit fugged.

FrannyandZooey · 01/06/2008 20:36

oh yes that is upsetting
one child at ds's nursery has a coat that always reeks

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 01/06/2008 20:40

Yuck, what a pain.
Have to agree with CarGirl and Swedes, it's best to ask before you buy, often if it doesn't refer to smoke free it means that it comes from a smoker's home.
THis has really put me off ebay, it's hard to buy without looking...
Hope you get your money back.

purplejennyrose · 01/06/2008 20:54

oh it's grim - I had this - got a bag which the seller had supposedly custom made and it stank - had to wash it 4 times - when I mentioned it she said ' funny no-one here smokes' - yeah right who was it then the postman??
